A little spin on the old story of Narcissus. Narcissus, as you may well know, was a quite lovely Greek youth enamoured by his own image. He pined away his days staring at his own reflection, eventually growing roots in the ground- punished by the gods for his vanity, he was transformed into the Narcissus flower. Of course this is the root of modern English words like narcissist and narcissistic. / In this work I wanted to spin that old myth in a different direction. As an artist I find myself working for hours and hours, days at a time on my artwork. When I rest from my painting I find myself staring at the result, intrigued by my own work. I love painting and I’m in love with my work. Now, it’s often said that art is but an extention of the artist. If that’s the case then it goes to follow that I’m a bit of a narcissist myself, albeit of a different sort. / The joke in this piece is that it’s a self-portrait. But I’m staring down at my work, which happens to be a Narcissus flower (Narcissus poeticus, to be exact), the work being but a different reflection of myself. / The original was completed in watercolor and gouache media on Arches 180lb. cold-press cotton rag, 2007.

I’m sort of feeling creative lately.. but not sure what to do about it. So as usual, I covered my stupid face in makeup and took stupid pictures. :D I’m not sure that I really actually like it.. the colors are nice, but it didn’t exactly come out the way I wanted. After the challenge is over I’ll be restoring it to its full size as I prefer it like that. / Here is what it should look like when I restore it to it’s original size: For the Happy challenge (whoo, I won!). Stefan Sagmeister is asking people to rate their happiness from 1 to 10, and create a portrait that illustrates this. A selection of works will be included in his upcoming “Happy Film”. I’m baffled by this number system, but I’ve given myself a 3. Although I suppose at any given moment I may be anywhere between a 1 and a 10, I figure I should average it out a bit. This is for the happy challenge / . / Rate yourself on a scale from 1-10 (1 being seriously depressed, 10 being the happiest) and then create self-portrait expressing that state. / . / I started with this photograph / . / / . / Then printed it out, painted and used sharpie and photographed it again and played some more in gimp lol why ? IDK I look so creepy …...............A rate of 7 out of 10 in happiness :)

The Irony was not lost on me with this one. this was by far the most frustrating thing I have ever created. / I had envisioned a completely different shot to this when i came up with the concept. But it just wouldn’t work, no matter what i did it just would not co-operate and work out how it should. I tried everything to get what i wanted, i couldn’t get the perspective right, i couldn’t get the framing right, i couldn’t get the composition right, the hair and wardrobe didn’t look how it should, Strongest hair gel you can get my ass… it was all so fucking frustrating… once i got sick of trying and failing and wanting to put the axe through my camera and head, i decided to go a completely different route, this is that route…. I do like this shot though, its quite different than what i had in mind, but it works. One day i will do it again, and it will work…. it better… / . / I’m sure many of you can relate to this idea, this isn’t just a reflection of Artist against their Art, the art is our world, and we get so frustrated when it doesn’t work out, lately I have been feeling quite down and out over events and thoughts I’ve been thinking about non stop, so i decided to make this… / .
