Colour By Numbers: Photoshop Tutorial I’ve been experimenting with water colour painting and using Photoshop to create ‘Colour By Numbers’ images and printing them on water colour paper to paint. / I thought that maybe other people might be interested, so I took a found image of Audrey Tautou the French film actress and created a visual record of the steps. / The images are clickable for the larger versions. Photoshop CS2 was used but any version will do. That can be done simply, two ways: / a. Image>Mode>Grayscale / b. Image>Adjust>Desaturate Then I resampled the image from 16cm x 13cm at 72dpi to a size that would fit onto an A4 sheet (30cm x 21cm) at 200dpi. / Image>Image Size / Constrain proportions: check / Resample image: check – Bicubic sampling / Resolution: 200 pixels/inch / Height: 20 cm – the width changes proportionally automatically. 2. For this image I wanted to bring out some detail from the dark hair. / Image>Adjust>Shadow/Highlights / Shadow amount: 100% / Note: If using pre CS2: Image>Adjust>Brightness & Contrast can be used for similar results. Image>Adjust>Posterize / Levels: 4 (this is the amount of tones the image will be reduced to.) I found the result to be unsatisfactory due to the rough edges and parts of the image not being clearly defined. So I returned to the previous state. 4. Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur / Radius: 3 pixels Levels: 4 This time the edges are clearly defined and rounder. 6. To achieve the above: / a. Using the Magic Wand tool: tolerance 1, contiguous NOT checked, click anywhere on the white parts of the image. This selects all the white elements. b. Create a new layer (click the ‘page with bent corner’ icon at the bottom of the Layers pallete. c. Edit>Stroke> / Stroke: 2 pixels / Colour: light gray (click the coloured rectangle which opens a colour picker) / Location: inside d. Select>Deselect You will have a layer with the ‘stroke’ or selection edge colour gray. As the rest of the layer is transparent it will be hard to see against the checkerboard, so create a new layer below this layer and the fill it with white: / Edit>Fill / Contents: Use: White Repeat the stroke instructions for the other 3 tones, each on a new layer. Make sure the posterized image layer is selected when selecting tones with the Magic Wand and then select the relevant blank layer to colour the stroke. 7. This is the image with all four tones outlined or stroked. / This perfectly acceptable, but if you want to separate the tones a bit more… Use the Magic Wand as before to select a tone. Then: / Select>Modify>Contract: 3 pixels / Colour the stroke as above. Repeat for the other 3 tones. 9. If you want to be able to paint the areas with correct tones/colours you can add numbers using the Type tool: 10pt & light gray, as for the strokes. / Note: a new layer is created for type. / I duplicate the current type layer each time by selecting the type layer and dragging it to the New Layer icon. / Then using the Move tool, I move the type where I want it on the image. / When finished I make all layers invisible, except the type layers for the the relevant number: by clicking off the eye icon to the left of each unwanted layer. / Then Layer>Merge visible 10. Print the image on a sheet of water colour paper or similar thickness. I just bought a 12 sheet, A4, 220gsm, water colour pad at Big W for $8.30 which is reasonable. / If you paint in water colours the numbers/strokes may show through if they are too dark or the paint is too thin, experiment to get the best result. “ This is my first attempt with watered down acrylics that had a gouache effect and covered the strokes. / You could use gouache, oils, felt-tip markers, pencils etc. I hope this tutorial was helpful and clearly understood. Let me know if something is unclear or you have a question. / Upload any experiments to this journal entry if you like. I would love to see what people come up with.

Hello, I sell art as cell phone wall-papers on a popular site called myxer. I got an account there because I’m in a band so I figured I’d start selling my art there as well. It’s a safe way to sell your art because it’s small when it’s a wall paper. If anyone else wants to sell then we can work out a 50% spit and it won’t cost you anything. The selling of my wall-papers will be advertised on www.blogus.proboards.com which is my free message board. Let me know.

Yesterday the latest issue of my Artists Magazine plopped through my mail slot and as usual I sat down to devour it whole...to my surprise the first words that jumped out at me from the business section was the word RedBubble…I immediately abandoned the other articles... I rapidly scanned the section, just to make sure there was nothing critical that would result in a immediate letter to the editor, and having assertained that it was all praise, relaxed and read it again.. They focused on three artists.. Ross Ford, Tim Aldridge and Derek Stewart (I could not find the last two profiles, though they showed pictures of the actual pages)....with quotes from the artists, RB was praised for it’s high quality Tshirts, diversity of wall art, browse by categories, and of course the wonderful community of “artists who give you encouragement and feedback“ With a final section on the ease of use, quality of printing, and pricing, the article mentions that unlike others, artists can sign up at RedBubble for free…the article also included sections on Imagekind and Etsy, but I left those for later…much later

While surfing the internet I came across eFrame.co.uk / They appeared to be able to make custom mounts and frames for my original paintings at half the cost and in half the time of my local high street picture framers? What? Really? That’s what I thought so I went ahead and ordered a small frame and mount to my exact requirements using their website and this is what happened…. I placed my order on Friday 24th July 2009. It arrived today, YES just 7 days later. It arrived in an enormous box. It’s only a small painting I wanted to have framed which you can see on the far right of the photo…. / The reason for the enormous box became apparent when I started to unwrap it. It’s an unusual way of packaging things but I was impressed The small frame fixed to stiff card and held well away from the edges of the enormous box where it couldn’t get damaged unless an elephent trod on it in transit. Not very likely in the UK. / OK, so I now have it all finally unwrapped and unpacked. Let’s have a closer look at what they have sent me front and back… / I’m impressed, it’s even come with all the necessary fixings to be able to hang it like they promised.. / Here is a close up of the mitre joints. So far I am thrilled and can’t find any fault with it. / Well there has got to be something wrong with it. Let’s take it apart and try to put my original painting in it. I was really disappointed to notice the perspex glazing was scratched (glass is available as an option). My disappointment very quickly turned to delight when I realised the scratches were on a protective film that easily peeled off the perspex on both sides. / Maybe they’ve made it the wrong size and my painting won’t fit. That will be a real nuisance because it’s an original painting. I can’t enlarge or reduce it. Maybe it doesn’t look exactly like they said it would on their website’s preview? Spot the difference…. / / How easy was it to assemble? Well, If I hadn’t kept stopping to take photographs It would have taken less than 5 minutes. The only tool required was a screwdriver to be able to attach the supplied fixings to the back of it. (note. The backing tape was supplied extra but one roll will last ages.) / The finished, custom made frame, ordered, made to measure, delivered in 7 days and assembled by me in 5 minutes. / So what did it cost? Frame, mount, glazing, mdf backing board made to my exact specifications and accurate to the millimetre, including fixings. £UK18.70p / Shipping by express courier $UK6.10p My local high street framer would charge over £UK40.00p and it could take 3 weeks instead of 7 days. Will I be using eFrame.co.uk again? Yep sure I will.

Thank you for the time and effort you put in to making this the best art site anywhere on the internet today, and for adding that personal touch and being always open to listening to new ideas. You really do rock and excel at what you do. other works that sold this week from my studio / / This week I was thrilled that I sold an original painting of Two Dolls along with 2 giclee prints – one of Ocean Angel and the other of I’m a Little Teapot to a lady in Victoria who made contact privately. I have never met her before, and not sure if she saw me on RB or my website or was referred by another…I must ask her, it’s good to know these things. Thought it might be good to provide some examples of how they might look on the wall stretched as canvas prints or as giclee paper prints under glass… what you see here are giclee prints on canvas done on my printer of Ocean Angel and Two Dolls, one is stretched by the framer professionally, and the other was stretched by my husband on a A3 board… the “I’m a Little Teapot” is the original painting in a white box frame… gives you some idea of how they look up on the wall… always so much nicer once framed or stretched.. but i sell most of my work loose, it’s so much easier to post that way, and then one can choose the frame and matt or style they prefer to best suit the home/wall/paint colour. These are purely examples…but give a good indication. / If you’re interested in an original painting, please contact me for availability and price, alternatively, originals not available are still available as prints here on redbubble.
