Pirates VS Ninja, the way its always been…
Wanted to share with you all my latest “painting”.. well it’s painted on computer actually for a specific purpose. As much as I love the smell of turps and the mess of gooey paint, I also spend time doing digital mock ups and reinterpretations of my real world work when I can find the time. I produced a drawing tutorial for the Australasian website of Wacom (makers of digital drawing tablets) some time ago and was contacted by them recently and invited to submit a painting for an upcoming book titled “The Art of Making Marks”. The deadline was pretty tight at the time (2 days) so I dusted off my trusty Intuos 3 tablet, picked up my pen and set to work overnight. I finished up at 2:30 am but was quite pleased with the result. / It’s so weird how some image editing and painting programs really do feel like I’m pushing and dragging paint around.. a normal painting like this in traditional media (oils) could take me a few weeks to complete! However, six hours straight left me pretty tired by the end of it but it was nice to play around in a painting arena I haven’t visited for a while. A lot of people have difficulty accepting computer generated work as real art but it doesn’t bother me and has its place. / I love my jars of smelly turps, soiled rags, pots of brushes, broken charcoal, oil sticks, pastels and large primed canvas just like the next crazy painter. I also love that solitary buzz of a late night in the studio with good music, red wine for company and a half finished painting on the go. But this was something different… and with a finished result just as satisfying for me. So, I introduce to you “The Girl who loved Prose”, a fiery red haired Irish woman with a passion for the literary arts and like her caffeine girl friends, an ambiguous stare. / It took several long hours to complete but I convinced myself to stop eventually. / You just don’t mess with Irish girls.. Cheers! / Leith
Fluid digital abstract. Multicolored on black background.
Took some of the background out of the Rapture painting to see what it would look like. Makes a kind of cool faded design.

“Badges?... We don’t need no… stinkin’ badges!” is one of the most frequently quoted, misquoted, and parodied movie quotations in history. In 2005, it was chosen as #36 on the American Film Institute list, AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movie The original quotation comes from the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. In one of the scenes in the movie a Mexican bandit leader (Gold Hat played by Alfonso Bedoya) is trying to convince Fred C Dobbs (played by Bogart) and company that they are the Federales. / Dobbs: ‘If you’re the police where are your badges?’ / Gold Hat: ‘Badges? We ain’t got no badges. We don’t need no badges! I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges!’[1] / This in turn was adapted from B Traven’s 1927 novel upon which the movie was based: “All right,” Curtain shouted back. “If you are the police, where are your badges? Let’s see them.” “Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrón and ching’ tu madre! Come out from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
The endangered Tiger is a majestic, solitary animal being the largest member of the cat family. In terms of camouflage, the Tiger is one of the best equipped of all the carnivores. Used to defend its territory, the Tiger’s roar can be heard up to 2km away. A very strong swimmer, the Tiger avoids the midday sun by bathing in water. Found in hot dry scrub jungle, teak and bamboo forests and tropical mangrove estuaries all areas close to rivers and lakes. The Tiger is considered to have evolved in China over one million years ago. There are eight subspecies of Tiger the Siberian, Bengal, South China, Indochinese, Sumatran and with three already extinct, the Caspian, Bali and Javan tigers. Legally protected against being hunted, the immediate threat to its survival is the growing demand for its parts for use in oriental medicine. Also the insidious destruction of tiger habitat and decline of prey populations places the tiger in severe danger of extinction. / The ‘Exotica Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the beauty of the strong and striking Bengal Tiger while creating an awareness of their plight.
The threatened Jaguar is the only living big cat of the American continent. The Jaguar is a roaring cat sometimes confused with the leopard, both having spots in rosettes, but those of the Jaguar have a black spot at the centre. A Jaguar has golden or brownish yellow fur and many spots. The spots along its back and sides are light-coloured with dark borders. The spots on its head, legs and underside are black. Black Jaguars live in South America. They live in forests, shrubby areas, and grasslands – wherever they can hide. They hunt mainly on the ground and at night, and eat almost any kind of animal or fish. The powerful Jaguar has remarkable strength, a good climber and an accomplished swimmer. They measure up to 2.6m long, including their 75cm tail. They weigh up to 136 kilograms. / The Jaguar symbolised strength and courage to the ancient Maya Indians, who considered the animal a god. The Jaguars once ranged from the southern states of the USA south over almost the entire South American continent, but are now extinct in almost all areas close to human settlements. It lives only in Mexico and Central and South America. Jaguars, the largest neotropical cats with the most prized fur, have been ruthlessly hunted. It faces serious danger from fur hunters and environmental changes. The USA now prohibits the import and export of Jaguars or their pelts. / The ‘Lost City Collection’ wildlife painting portrays the handsome and powerful Jaguar while creating an awareness of their plight.
