I’ve finally had a chance to add a few images to my portfolio, so far only a few of them are available for sale because I need to take bigger pictures or ones of the final artwork that actually has my signature on it. A few images will remain as “not for sale” because they are commissioned artwork that I do not have permission to profit from print sales. In addition, have three new dog acrylic paintings nearly completed that I will be adding later this week, hopefully. Yep, as you can probably tell, I’m mostly a dog painter. Some people see dead people. Well, I paint dogs. And other animals, specifically pets such as cats and horses, because I am a pet portrait artist, but dogs are my usual subject matter and the major inspiration for my artwork. Ready for a shameless plug? You can have a look at my online gallery here http://www.pencilportraits.com.au Ta-Ta for now Michelle / (that dog artist)

I rather like RedBubble offering printing optuion of photographs to canvas. I really do. I has ‘allowed’ me to process some of my photographs with Fine Arts – Oil Painting texture. There are some of my photographs I would myself prefer to be printed out on a large canvas, and I am planning on doing just that. :)

Within about an hour of introducing myself in one of the forums, I received 3 comments about my work by some fabulous artists. The artwork represented on this site is ultra high quality, very creative, and well done. It is truly wonderful in this day and age to be able to share creativity with people on another continent with the click of a mouse button.

Okay let me start of by saying, like most painters I’m not much of a photographer. I don’t have a studio set up with a SLR Camera, lighting lamps and tripods set up to take images of my work but then I’m guessing many of you will be in the same situation. / I am just going to give you some hints on how to present your work in the best possible light to load up onto redbubble. 1. Take your photos outside in natural light. Indoor lighting can colour your work a dull yellow colour. / / 2. If your work reflects light, ie oil paintings, varnished work and even some graphite work, then it is much better to photograph your work in open shade. This stops that annoying shiny effect you can sometimes get, and never, ever use a flash. If your work is behind glass it is very hard to photograph, so the big hint is document it before you frame it. / / 3. Try your very utmost to line up work work so that it is as parallel to the camera. This will stop the distortion you can sometimes get on your work. Easiest way I guess it to stand it up 90 degrees against a wall and hold or stand your camera as straight on as possible. / / 4. You want your painting to occupy as much of the viewing space as possible but don’t get to close to your image, this also distorts the image. You are much better of standing back from the image and zooming in. The bigger the painting on your image the greater the resolution you will get at the end. / / These are the four basic hints for taking pictures yourself. Much can also be done after your image is taken. I have photoshop but many other programs can carry out the simple steps I will outline here. Remember we want to represent our paintings as close as possible to the real thing so don’t get carried anyway with post production. 1. Firstly change your image resolution to 300 pixels/inch this is the best resolution to work with (or at least this is what I was taught). / / 2. Make sure your image has the correct rotation, slight misalignments usually can be fixed with cropping. Hopefully your work is free of distortions. There is a way of correcting for this but it is much better to spend time when photographing to get this right. / / 3. Crop the image down so unwanted background is gone. If somebody wants to buy a print of your work I’m sure they wont appreciate half of your wall as well. / / 4. Lastly you can adjust the levels so the image is as close to the real thing as possible. Hopefully this will help some of you out. If anybody wants more information on how to change image size, rotation, cropping and levels I can give some advice on how to do this in photoshop only. If there is a demand I will do it. I also have notes on how to copy indoors but it requires a lot more equipment. Anyway let me know if you would like this also.

I have just upgraded my computer and after four harrowing days of working with Vista incompatability I am finally able to be online for more than ten minutes and so can upload some more work. I have just had the fun of spending the day at a friends farm with her 70 plus alpacas – they are amazing animals! I have finally seen the camera I would love to own, but it is a little out of reach right now. Unless by some miracle $3 grand drops out of the sky into my hands LOL! Its a Canon 40D with accompanying lenses. Yum yum! I have a new mandala on the easel – a huge 100cm x 100cm acrylic based on the four treasures of Ireland. It’s a huge celtic mandala and it is becoming very exciting working on it. Am using multiple techniques including impressionist combined with anime – will post when complete. Due to its size, it’s about 4 weeks off completion. They usually take a week or two for the smaller ones but the big ones take a month or two, depending on how much time life leaves me to actually paint! Bright Blessings:)

Hello fellow bubblers! I’m getting rather excited at the thought of doing a callaborative art piece. I think when two people’s creative energies get together, it can spark a whole load more creativity so I’d like to try this out by painting one of your personally favourite photos. As you will see in my portfolio, I love nature, wildlife and flowers, but I’m completely open to suggestions for this piece (artistic talents willing!). The MOST important thing, is that it is one of YOUR favourite photos/digital artwork. This is because I’m hoping to feel some of the energy and connection you have with that particular piece. I’m not looking for your most popular work by other’s standards unless those standards mirror your own. I’d have to say at this stage, no portraits or people, apart from sillouettes as I’m not experienced in this category. I’d be so happy to hear back from anyone who wants to get involved. Please bubblemail me preferably with a link to your suggested artwork, but most importantly, a brief outline as to why that particular work is your favourite… I will talk in more detail about this via bubblemail for those intested in participating. If the first one is a sucess, I may do many more of these, so all of your suggestions will be considered for the future also. I’m not going to put a timescale on this as I don’t know how many people are going to be interested yet. Also, once I have chosen which work I’m going to paint, I will want to do so when the time is right. This could well be straight away, but otherwise, your patience will be appreciated! The acrylic painting will be on either box, or stretched canvas depending on its suitability to the photographic image. The final painting will be on sale exclusively at redbubble as a limited edition print of 50. greetings cards will not be limited. The original painting will also be up for sale privately. Thanking you all in advance, hope to hear back from you soon!! Jen :-)

I’ve been occupied with a lot of extraneous stuff bordering on nightmare—both work and home; it’s been a busy and distracting month that’s kept me from one of my favorite places on earth, RedBubble. I’ve been heartbroken not to be able to show good photographs of my paintings. My work is very painterly, lots of heavy pigment and brushwork that I’ve been unable to capture on film. I’ve been so especially unhappy about the Kipling portrait because it looks so much better than the photo I have up now, I think it was that straw and the camel’s back thing, and I haven’t known what to do. / Until Friday. / This weekend and over the next week, I’ll be uploading a lot of new photographs, chiefly because I have a fine digital camera now. For photographers here, it’s a Fujifilm E550 with a 7.2 zoom. I’ve been reading up on it and experimenting to figure out how to use it. The photos are really good. I can’t believe the difference. And you’ll be able to see the actual paintings I’ve done, not the ghostly or blurred or over-pixilated images that were all I could muster before. I’ve started to empty out my site, cut back by three pages so far, and I’m not sure what to do about removing the original posts because all the wonderful heartwarming comments are there. Didn’t care so much about losing the couple of thousand views, and mostly I tried to pick out the ones with few or no comments and no favorites. Maybe I’ll just make the old stuff unavailable for sale, and the new photographs of paintings for sale. Any advice will be appreciated. Then too, some of the earlier stuff looks good, the pen and inks are from a professonal service, and some have even sold. ????? Please forgive me for my absence, and failure to note all the remarkable work my RedBubble friends and compatriots are so darn good at doing. I’ve missed this place tremendously, and most especially the fine photography and paintings from people I’ve come to know and admire. I’ll be updating my own website, The Hawks Perch, aftter this; looks like I’ve got the summer’s work cut out for me. / The dust is settling. See you all soon again, and I hope you’ll have the chance to stop by and let me know what you think. / Best wishes to you all, / Barbara

On the way home from Wal-Mart, the place of blender triumph, I did some drawing and painting. Still not finished with the piece, but, here’s an album that shows some of the work in progress. “Work in progress”http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=82013&l=2831d&id=612813763 Hopefully that’ll work, anyway! Though, I shall probably have to change the name of the album. I mean, once I figure out what the name of the painting is, anyway. Otherwise, if I used the same album for all pieces, it would get nigh on confusing to us all! Especially me! For those too lazy to go and read the description, I shall post a couple of the photos here .. if it works! lol That’s the first wee drawing of the painting, done in charcoal on canvas That is while still in the van, but having started with the watercolor paints. No, i don’t usually paint in the van. Sometimes, though, you know, you just gotta do what you gotta do. I had the paints, they were watercolors, my clothes were black, and we were on our way home, so if there had been any major incidents or accidents it wouldn’t have been too big a deal. The main thing i learned from working on this painting, is that I am really, really bad with brushes. Well, the business end of them. I can kick butt with the handle, doing quasi-pointillism

  • A Few of My Favourite Things
    by Holly Ringland

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas ...

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas I didn’t exactly need arm twisting when I found out there was a free event happening at the National Gallery on Saturday afternoon: I would have handed over my credit card willingly to take respite from the unforgiving heat in an air conditioned cardboard box if I could have. Instead, for two sublime hours, I sat in a small theatre listening to some of Australia’s finest writers read from poems and novels by contemporaries of Degas, whose glorious art is the NGA’s current exhibition. I was entrenched in Paris, the bawdy house of Europe, through the affairs and cross-dressing of George Sand, Zola’s descriptions of the glittering displays and the dark underside of Paris under the Second Empire, Balzac’s account of an orgy, Baudelaire’s questioning of Romantic values, Flaubert’s platonic love letters and Théophile Gautier’s description of the Opera. I was swept from Paris to Russia to London via poetry and prose selections that left me breathless with spells brewing in my eyes and the words of classics lingering around me in a velvety fog. As I walked out of the theatre and back in the bright lemony light of day and the outside world, I felt the swirling words and sumptuous art settle over me, Paris soaking into my skin. The loveliness lingered well into my weekend and I have thought to myself often since how enamored I was by the experience, how instantly I fell in love with the writings of Degas’ contemporaries and the brush strokes of Degas’ social commentary layered under portraits of ballerinas and top-hat gentlemen or horse racing and carnivals in green countryside. I recognised the feeling; I feel the same way when I come across a piece of writing or artwork on Red Bubble that takes my breath away and envelopes me. As I was driving home, I thought to myself given the chance, I would have added that afternoon to my favourites. Ever since, I’ve been thinking about our favourites and what the function of ‘favouriting’ something means on Red Bubble. To me, that one little strip of light boxes on my Red Bubble page is my own personal gallery, my own personal bookshop; a cool quiet sanctuary that exists wholly and solely for my pleasure, delight and wonder. I favourite work that changes me, that alters who I was before I absorbed the work to who I was afterward. Being able to ‘favourite’ work on Red Bubble fills me with the same itching in my fingertips that I feel when I walk into an empty house and immediately start collecting things to fill the space with; colour, sentences, textures, moments, scents, themes and life. Since Saturday, I have been sumptuously and gloriously going back through all my favourites, reading your words and tracing the stroke of your pens, your ink, your paint, seeing the world through your eye. I found myself, after a page or two, hungry and cold and aching to physically crawl into and immerse myself in your work; to fill my belly with your colours and vowels and frames and sentences, to wrap myself in each piece and hibernate amidst such vibrant and potent creative energy: because like Degas and Balzac and Zola, our art and our writing are pieces of ourselves, whether built from experience or imagination, that we have set adrift in the world to say, here I was, here’s what I observed about being alive, here’s the ink I’ve spilled, the paint I’ve shaped, the charcoal I’ve recycled, the image I’ve scored on negative, here’s the mark I’ve left behind. Whether we’re Degas (or not) we are each of us artists in our own right, brave enough to allow our craft to see the light of day. I humbly thank you for the pieces of yourself I fill my Favourites sanctuary with.

Hi all! / Once again I need to reiterate how much I’ve been blown away by the welcome I’ve received here….and the amount of incredible talent that surrounds me. It’s awesome and humbling! I am writing this note in hopes of finding a photographer or two who would be open to collaborating with me on some pieces… and I need scenery and portrait work. We would together, of course, share credit, etc… I live near Laguna Beach, CA and I’m looking into displaying some stuff during the yearly Art Affair that starts near summer. I also want to do more marketing thru galleries and some other opportunities I might have. Someone recently approached me about doing a children’s book…. So…with that being said….I need to feel comfortable with someone who would be willing to let me use their images – and I want you to feel comfortable with me too. Feel free to write and share your thoughts, ideas, whatever… If any of you live in my neck of the woods, you can email me too – and maybe we can hook up for a cup of coffee. Thanks all of you—you are all dearies to me! Claudia / xoxoxoxo P.S. / I just started a new Facebook Fan Page and I’d be oh so honored if you would consider signing up with me there. :)

There is a thesis that every photographer should know how to paint. Should analyse others works, preferably good old master painters, and… Should paint him / herself. So as painful as it is, since I always wanted to paint, but always was too frustrated with the results I did paint something. It’s a lots of fun, but also so much frustration, and to my disappointed sleepless nights, because I can only paint at night. Just can’t focus on it during the day time… I’ve put some of my attempts here on RB. I’m not sure if I should put it here, but oh well if you won’t like it, I will remove it. In the end these are just my exercises not the big art or something. ;) If you want to draw yourself but you don’t have the will to do it some tips I’ve found help me. Firstly draw only what you like. If you always have problems with drawing hands or roses or horses (which are said to be hard subjects) try for example a beautiful tree. :) Secondly don’t assume you will get good results. It’s better to assume it’s ONLY a practice and you will destroy it or put to archive and never look at it again. Start with just some doodles on the paper margin. Nothing serious just harmless doodles. ;-) And the advice that works for me best. Go shopping. Go to some artist equipment shop and buy yourself a little colourful pack of crayons, a little pencil, earser, of course beautiful textured block with nice drawing on the cover. Just not too big sets. Because these are only exercises, nothing serious, right? If you will get into it you can always but bigger sets and if you don’t, oh well you don’t waste too much money. And in case you feel irresistible whim to doodle something you have some tools already. :) And the last very tempting advice. Browse. Go to deviantART, or any other huge database of art and browse. dA is good, because they have it very well categorised. / This mean you may find all the purple water colour irises made in technique of traditional art which is veeeery useful. Also dA have vast amount of stock images that can be VERY useful as a references to your drawings. :) What do you think? Encouraged to create good old traditional art? :D
