mikoto after 4 weeks at Paddington Markets
by mikotoI was going to write about my experience at the Paddington Markets...
I was going to write about my experience at the Paddington Markets after the first week but I though I’d wait till a month passed so that I had a better understanding of how it was going to be overall. Many people had said that it can be very up and down, and the were spot on. The biggest predicament so far has been where they place my stall. the first week there, I was in the ‘platinum’ area where much of the other arts and crafts are. it was a great vibe and the people around me were really friendly. I had a constant stream of interest and sold shirts and badges frequently. The 2nd and thirds week in contrast were not much fun. I was placed adjacent to the food area and on top of the playground. The smell of onion and screaming of kids was really not enjoyable and had a huge impact on the interest and frequency of sales. It was a little scary to get though half the day and not sell anything while watching people walk like zombies towards the irresistible smell of cooking sausage and onion. I made enough of a fuss to get placed back into the platinum area on the fourth week and it was back to where I feel I belong :) It a has so far been a lot of fun and very educational for me. I have said to a number of people that I was thinking about doing a masters at university that can cost upwards of $10,000, but then I decided why not instead invest into a small business idea that will more than likely make me work harder, teach me more, and at the very least earn back a few dollars. In all its a great way to spend my saturdays. My partner shannon is out there and we visit each other regularly and run away from our stall to have lunch together. She has been so helpful in helping teaching me the ins and outs of the markets and its funny to think the we are now “market honeys” Hope you enjoyed reading my account and if you get the chance come say hi! Scotty / Here is a picture of my stall. the Japanese privacy screens at the back really sets my little shirts shop apart / Here is a photo of some of the shirts, the middle 2 were from redbubble and I called them “One Offs” hehe. / I present my badges in muffin trays and have made a habit of buying 2 cupcakes in the morning. Its a great conversation starter and I get to eat them at the end of the day!

mikoto Selling @ Paddington Markets - Saturday 6th October
by mikotoAfter more than 9 months in development, I am going to be selling mikoto at Sydney’s Paddington Markets. !http://www.mikoto.com.au/...
After more than 9 months in development, I am going to be selling mikoto at Sydney’s Paddington Markets. It has been an amazing journey that has already been educational, fun and rewarding. The redbubble website has come along at just the right time for me, and has allowed this project go forward in a healthy and sure manner. Redbubble has been amazing in helping analyse which design are most appealing. Comments give me the emotional and genuine feedback thats like listening to specific people and how they feel about a design. It is as if they are walking past a window display and you overhear the sentence or two that someone might say out loud to a friend. Statistically redbubble has been awesome – seeing how quickly it gets viewed, how many times it is added as a favorite, and of course how many times (if any) a design has a sale gives me the real data that I have been able to take on board for future designs. / love the stats All this information is valuable and is shaping what mikoto is and what it will be. Occasionally the redbubble nerd/curator puts a design on the home page and I feel happy that my work is being appreciated and acknowledged by such a vibrant and popular website. It lifts my spirit and gives me encouragement. Buying the shirts has been so cool. I can see how a design looks for real. wear it out and see what people say. It has been instrumental in the application process of getting into the markets. I have a large number of shirts getting ordered with a Sydney based printing company using a number of special and experimental printing techniques. These were of course not ready in time for the interview. What were ready were redbubble shirts I had already bought. The selection committee were impressed with the shirts and the fact that they were made here in Australia by and innovative company using the latest technology really got their attention. Mikoto has taken 9 months and it is like my baby. The first day at markets will feel like bringing a new born into the world. I don’t know how things will go, but after such fun on redbubble I feel confident that people will like it, and hopefully buy a shirt or a badge. So if your in Sydney this Saturday or any other saturday make sure you drop in and say hi. cheers scotty

An oil Painting done in Sepia and white only. People may find it interesting to contrast this with “Memories of Padington- derived by giving the original image a treatment in photoshop to achieve a more impressionist look. This is an early staight framed saint, preparing to depart Paddington early last century. I’d be interested to see which image people prefer…

This little bear was sitting on the old stone wall surrounding Whitby Abbey, in Whitby, England. He had been there for some time… looking as if he’s weathered a few rainstorms. We spotted him as we were getting ready to leave and take the train back to York, and of course, I fell in love immediately! I took him down, brushed him off, and told my husband I wanted to take him with us! And then, very kindly – my hubby wondered outloud what would happen if perhaps the child who had left him behind came back to find him, and couldn’t? How sad that would be. Of course, I couldn’t possibly take him then. He was waiting for someone else to return… not me. :) So I carefully put him back where I had found him, and snapped this picture to take as a memory instead. I do so hope his owner came back for him.
