  • The Existential Divide / The more observational of you will remember I put this up awhile ago. And it’s back, slightly different, added text and white not black. I worked on a version with some more emphasis on text woven through it after some people I trust gave some advice. However I went back to a slightly more simplified version as I think that it really shouts on it’s own. That the crisp stark iconic impression of a barcode combined with the ever-so-recognisable, and yet never actually seen in this way, map of the world, cause more avenues of thought than one can reasonably handle without a stiff drink. / But now I’m doing that weird ranting thing about my own work which I normally try and avoid, I like it, and really that’s all that fucking matters. Where’s the whiskey?

We normally don’t pre-announce features, but this Thursday we’re releasing two things for the Groups that probably warrant a few days advanced notice to keep the group owners and moderators well-informed. There’ll be no such thing as a ‘Group Owner’ We see the groups as mini-communities. The idea that a community is owned by an individual leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It’s bugged us ever since we launched groups, so we’re correcting it. This Thursday when we release, all of the owner’s “super powers” (editing a group, adding new moderators, editing forums, etc) will be handed over to all the moderators in the group, and the owner will simply become one of the moderators. This isn’t to say that the group owners have been evil or bad, it’s just the idea of an owner that we hate. While we’re at it, the other thing that’s bugged us about groups is the idea of a Moderator. Great communities are led by example, so we’re going to call them Leaders. Groups will be able to set limits for each type of work For each type of work (images, clothing, writing, journals) the group leaders will be able to set a different limit, from none to unlimited and anywhere in between. For example, the Six Word Stories group will only allow written works, and the Agent Provocateur group may choose to only accept clothing works and maybe journal entries. The reason we’re pre-announcing this is because we’re going to take any existing “total works” limit in the groups, and apply it to each type of work. If your group had a limit of 4 works, it’ll now be a limit of 4 images, 4 journals, 4 clothing designs and 4 written works. So now might be a good time for group leaders to have a think about what their group needs, and make the changes after we release on Thursday. — Justin

  • Had a great adventure today – went for a drive to the forest for a ‘quick walk’ to take a few photos of the beautiful winter landscape – didn’t quite work out that way though!!! We ended up having to abandon the car in the forest car park as we couldn’t make it back up the frozen road to the top and the forest driveway that we had planned to return along was closed off with locked barriers – so ended up having to walk some extra 3 miles to the nearest village where we luckily caught the bus home! lol I’m sure someone suggested leaving the car at the top of the track and walking down …. still it was a fabulous day and have got some amazing shots in the forest to share! x This was taken along the road between Hamsterley Forest and Woodland Village on the walk back – must have been someone’s pride and joy once – and I’m sure those pigeon sheds would have held many a prize winning bird in their day.

  • The handsome Burmese Mountain Dog is often confused with the fine Swiss farm dog called the Bernese Mountain Dog, but lives a very different life in its native Myanmar. They were bred by northern tribesmen to hunt the ubiquitous and troublesome local skunks and to protect their farms and livestock.

  • Thought.. I’d design a t-shirt for dog lovers.. instead of saying “You had me at Hello”.. so..

  • The Badlands have been photographed millions of times and in so many different ways. The awe they inspire is endless I guess. Having lived in South Dakota my whole life, I have gone through this part of the country several times and it always looks different. I was struck by the thought of how early pioneers, using primitive tools like the implement in this image, tried to “own” this land—they tilled the prairies and built roads through the Badlands. We erected fences and designated “reservations” and hunted the game. Yet in the end, it belongs still to those who were there first. The buffalo, the antelope, the native Americans. And in spirit—if not in actuality, they will go on owning it after the prairie and the sun and time absorb the tools and machines we have invented to ravish it.
