The Existential Divide / The more observational of you will remember I put this up awhile ago. And it’s back, slightly different, added text and white not black. I worked on a version with some more emphasis on text woven through it after some people I trust gave some advice. However I went back to a slightly more simplified version as I think that it really shouts on it’s own. That the crisp stark iconic impression of a barcode combined with the ever-so-recognisable, and yet never actually seen in this way, map of the world, cause more avenues of thought than one can reasonably handle without a stiff drink. / But now I’m doing that weird ranting thing about my own work which I normally try and avoid, I like it, and really that’s all that fucking matters. Where’s the whiskey?

A heads up for group owners and moderators

We normally don’t pre-announce features, but this Thursday we’re releasing two things for the Groups that probably warrant a few days advanced notice to keep the group owners and moderators well-informed. There’ll be no such thing as a ‘Group Owner’ We see the groups as mini-communities. The idea that a community is owned by an individual leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It’s bugged us ever since we launched groups, so we’re correcting it. This Thursday when we release, all of the owner’s “super powers” (editing a group, adding new moderators, editing forums, etc) will be handed over to all the moderators in the group, and the owner will simply become one of the moderators. This isn’t to say that the group owners have been evil or bad, it’s just the idea of an owner that we hate. While we’re at it, the other thing that’s bugged us about groups is the idea of a Moderator. Great communities are led by example, so we’re going to call them Leaders. Groups will be able to set limits for each type of work For each type of work (images, clothing, writing, journals) the group leaders will be able to set a different limit, from none to unlimited and anywhere in between. For example, the Six Word Stories group will only allow written works, and the Agent Provocateur group may choose to only accept clothing works and maybe journal entries. The reason we’re pre-announcing this is because we’re going to take any existing “total works” limit in the groups, and apply it to each type of work. If your group had a limit of 4 works, it’ll now be a limit of 4 images, 4 journals, 4 clothing designs and 4 written works. So now might be a good time for group leaders to have a think about what their group needs, and make the changes after we release on Thursday. — Justin

Well, more of an impulse timing for the purchase, as I’ve wanted one ever since they’ve existed. Not to imply I haven’t loved my D70, as it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever owned. The D80 is set up, and the battery is charging as I write, so I haven’t had a play yet. Update: / Definately had time to have a play now, and really enjoying the D80 (got a few images up from it now). My D70 is being adopted into a happy home, so I’m sure that will work out well for all of us :)

Being a pet owner has it many joys. But for everthing there is a season, a time to be born and a time to die. Today, I had to make that hard decision of ending my pet’s life. She snuggled in my arms as she passed into another world. Maddie, my Himalayan cat, has been with me for 19¼ years. She was by my side through the good, bad and the unbelievable. Today, she is only with me in memory and photographs. This is when photographs become so important, for our memory sometimes tends to fade….

This is the scene (best viewed large) that greeted me when I got to the top of the abseiling rock! Unbelievable that something as spectacular as this can be found on the Highveld where I live. This is Avontuur Vallei (translated as Adventure Valley). The abseiling adventurers go down 50 metres (over the rocks you see in the foreground) and then climb back to the top along rocks! It is part of Buffalo Gorge, a fun place for adrenaline junkies! This is where I spent a whole Saturday on a photo shoot for the owner, Ryk Diepraam. The owner states the following as an attraction caption: “We have the Big 3 of nature ~ water, mountains & flora!” And it is true. The place is stunning. I have taken a lot of photos of the valley and the abseiling area (one half of the farm), but I have to go back to cover the other half of the farm (where the big & beautiful gorge is situated). Very rough terrain to the abseiling area though! We have a 2×4 Isuzu diesel “bakkie” (pickup truck) and we got stuck in a wild hog hole! The hole was sized 1,5m long and 1m wide. Could not see it as it was filled with muddy water from the previous day’s rain! The mud (of course) was caused by the hogs themselves with their rolling and frollicking!!! This is the official website of the place: BUFFALO GORGE /

PET OWNERS DISATER PLAN
by mlgkatsFrom: Dr Andrew Jones / Author: Veterinary Secrets Revealed / Website: http://www.theonlinevet.com Hello Melynda, Re: Animals affect…
From: Dr Andrew Jones / Author: Veterinary Secrets Revealed / Website: http://www.theonlinevet.com Hello Melynda, Re: Animals affected by 2 MAJOR World Disasters. ////////////////////////////////////////////// Good morning fellow readers. There has been some pretty UNREAL world disasters in the / last week. First in Mynamar ( Burma) a MAJOR cyclone that has left / thousands of people, and probably HUNDREDS of thousands / of animals dead. Then yesterday in China, a HUGE earthquake, that has left / thousands of people and again probably HUNDREDS of thousands / of animals stranded- with many dead. The news is ALL focused on the human tragedy and loss- / rightfully so- but on top of this there is the animals: / pets, farm animals and the wildlife ALL affected. I am grateful to be living somewhere where the chance of / MAJOR disaster is pretty low, and my heart goes out to all / of the people, and the animals affected by these tragedies. BUT Melynda, you and I can be affected. Major Disaster Can Happen here. SO the key is NOT to live a LIFE in fear, but to be prepared / if it ever happens. So I went to my Membership site, http://www.theonlinevet.com, / and I am sending you a Special Report on Disaster Preparation: Be Prepared with a Disaster Plan The best way to protect your family from the effects of a / disaster is to have a disaster plan. If you are a pet owner, / that plan must include your pets. Being prepared can save their / lives. Different disasters require different responses. But whether / the disaster is a hurricane or a hazardous spill, you may have / to evacuate your home. In the event of a disaster, if you must evacuate, the most / important thing you can do to protect your pets is to evacuate / them, too. Leaving pets behind, even if you try to create a safe / place for them, is likely to result in their being injured, lost, / or worse. So prepare now for the day when you and your pets may / have to leave your home. 1. Have a Safe Place To Take Your Pets Disaster shelters cannot accept pets because of provincial and / states’ health and safety regulations and other considerations. / Service animals who assist people with disabilities are the / only animals allowed in shelters. It may be difficult, if not / impossible, to find shelter for your animals in the midst of a / disaster, so plan ahead. Do not wait until disaster strikes to / do your research. Contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to check / policies on accepting pets and restrictions on number, size, / and species. Ask if “no pet” policies could be waived in an / emergency. Keep a list of “pet friendly” places, including / phone numbers, with other disaster information and supplies. / If you have notice of an impending disaster, call ahead for / reservations. Ask friends, relatives, or others outside the affected area / whether they could shelter your animals. If you have more / than one pet, they may be more comfortable if kept together, / but be prepared to house them separately. Prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who / could shelter animals in an emergency; include 24-hour phone / numbers. Ask local animal shelters if they provide emergency shelter or / foster care for pets in a disaster. Animal shelters may be / overburdened caring for the animals they already have as well / as those displaced by a disaster, so this should be your last / resort. 2. Assemble a Portable Pet Disaster Supplies Kit Whether you are away from home for a day or a week, you’ll / need essential supplies. Keep items in an accessible place / and store them in sturdy containers that can be carried / easily (duffle bags, covered trash containers, etc.). Your / pet disaster supplies kit should include: Medications and medical records (stored in a waterproof / container) and a first aid kit. Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers to transport / pets safely and ensure that your animals can’t escape. Current photos of your pets in case they get lost. Food, potable water, bowls, cat litter/pan, and can opener. Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, / behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian / in case you have to foster or board your pets. Pet beds and toys, if easily transportable. 3. Know What To Do As a Disaster Approaches Often, warnings are issued hours, even days, in advance. / At the first hint of disaster, act to protect your pet. Call ahead to confirm emergency shelter arrangements for / you and your pets. Check to be sure your pet disaster supplies are ready to / take at a moment’s notice. Bring all pets into the house so that you won’t have to / search for them if you have to leave in a hurry. Make sure all dogs and cats are wearing collars and securely / fastened, up-to-date identification. Attach the phone number / and address of your temporary shelter, if you know it, or / of a friend or relative outside the disaster area. You can / buy temporary tags or put adhesive tape on the back of your / pet’s ID tag, adding information with an indelible pen. You may not be home when the evacuation order comes. Find / out if a trusted neighbor would be willing to take your / pets and meet you at a prearranged location. This person / should be comfortable with your pets, know where your animals / are likely to be, know where your pet disaster supplies kit / is kept, and have a key to your home. If you use a petsitting / service, they may be available to help, but discuss the / possibility well in advance. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// P.S. Planning and preparation will enable you to evacuate with your / pets quickly and safely. But bear in mind that animals react / differently under stress. Outside your home and in the car, / keep dogs securely leashed. Transport cats in carriers. Don’t / leave animals unattended anywhere they can run off. The most / trustworthy pets may panic, hide, try to escape, or even bite / or scratch. And, when you return home, give your pets time to / settle back into their routines. It’s too late to wait until it happens… If you haven’t / prepared for this, then spend 1 less hour this week watching / T.V. and get prepared. P.P.S. You can get access to HUNDREDS of Quality Reports like / these, PLUS access to ME on the Forum, a MONTHLY Teleseminar, / AND a CD or DVD sent to YOU in the Mail Each MONTH. To get this and EVEN MORE got to: http://www.theonlinevet.com It’s Your Pet…Heal Them At Home! Best Wishes, Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

ASPCA NEWS ALERT:FOR DOG OWNERS

HERE I S SOME INFO I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN IF YOU DON’T ALL READY KNOW PET POISON ALERT: COCOA BEAN MULCH CAN BE TOXIC TO DOGS / Cocoa Bean MulchIf your dog likes to spend his summer grazing in your garden, his treat-seeking nose may lead him to one danger in particular: the sweet-smelling, but potentially harmful cocoa bean mulch. Made of cocoa bean shells and considered desirable for its eventual degradation into organic fertilizer, this gardener’s choice can be toxic to canines if eaten in large quantities—and some dogs have been known to eat amazing amounts! In 2007, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) handled 26 cases of cocoa bean mulch ingestion—a third originating in California. “Dogs are attracted to the fertilizer’s sweet smell,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, ASPCA Veterinary Toxicologist and APCC Director, “but like chocolate, cocoa bean mulch can be too much for our canine companions.” Ingestion of large amounts of cocoa bean mulch, which contains residual amounts of theobromine—a methylxanthine found in chocolate and known to be toxic to dogs—may cause a variety of clinical signs. These typically start with vomiting, diarrhea and elevated heart rate, and if large amounts are consumed, they may progress to hyperactivity, muscle tremors and possibly other more serious neurological signs. Treatment includes administering medical-grade activated charcoal, bringing tremors under control, cardiac monitoring and preventing further exposure. “One key point to remember is that some dogs, particularly those with indiscriminate eating habits, can be attracted to any organic matter,” says Dana Farbman, APCC Senior Manager, Professional Communications. “Therefore, if you have a dog with such eating habits, it’s important that you don’t leave him unsupervised or allow him into areas where such materials are being used.” To avoid contact, pet parents should consider a nontoxic alternative, such as shredded pine, cedar or hemlock bark. These will keep your pooch—and your garden—healthy. For more detailed information, please take a look at our Animal Poison Control Center online. thank you / melynda (mel)
