The title of this work is taken from Edwin Markham’s epigram, The Outwitted. He drew a circle that shut me out / Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout! / But love and I had the wit to win – / We drew a circle that took him in. Outside the Circle presents portraits of thirteen people who may, or may not, have a different sexual preference to you. The way in which you interpret or react to these portraits will be heavily influenced by contemporary society’s perceptions of gender and sexuality which, in spite of current legislation to the contrary, still place non-heterosexual people outside the circle of ‘normality’ and ‘respectability’. The visual inspiration for the portraits came from Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, The Last Supper, which portrays the moment when Christ tells his disciples that one of them will betray him, setting in motion the final events that will result in the creation of the Christian Movement. In choosing to follow Christ, his disciples – heretics and rebels of their time – exposed themselves to ridicule and the threat of harm and, in some cases, alienation from their families and ostracisation from the society they lived in – all areas of censure faced by a non-heterosexual person when first revealing his or her sexual orientation. In the twenty-first century, the majority of religious teachings throughout the / world still condemn homosexuality so there is a conscious irony in using The Last Supper to underpin the portraits presented. © Jacqui Jay Grafton 2009
