  • The strange looking apparatus is a harp trap. Its purpose, to catch bats. It comprises a series of tightly stretched fishing line that the bats echolocation calls cannot detect. In this case, the bats would fly out of the old mine shaft, and some, into the harp trap. Once they fly into the trap, they slide down into the cloth bag at the bottom. Then we collect them out and record species, sex and abundance, before releasing them. The purpose of this survey was to establish what species of bats were using these old shafts, and if so, we they breeding there? This bat survey was near Hermidale, between Cobar and Nyngan in western NSW. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey providing specialist ecological services across Australia.
