At Hunters Gorge on the Diamantina River in outback Queensland.The bird life here was amazing.The setting sun hit the gorge wall lighting it up glowingly and it then reflected in the still waters,I wached as slowly this pelecan drifted into the reflected glow of the golden sun.

Taken on the lunette at Lake Mungo. This shows the effects of erosion and the soft pinks and greys of the lunette with the occasional splash of red.

This image is a ‘double,long exposure’.I shot it on a mamiya 645 medium format camera.At dusk I took the afternoon exposure with the red earth and the blue sky then 3 hours later took another exposure on the same frame of film for 12 hours.This is the result.

There are four main lakes, Lake Menindee, Lake Cawndilla, Lake Pamamaroo, and Lake Wetherell created from a series of natural depressions that filled during floods. The Menindee Lakes and Darling River were a lifeline for early explorers and it was thought the Darling would provide a means to develop Australia’s interior. The flows of the river proved to be unreliable causing difficulties with navigation and water supply and the idea of using the Menindee Lakes for water conservation was born in the late 1890s. Today the lakes and dams create a welcome water haven in the arid Outback landscape as well as a bird-watchers paradise where bird watching tours are highly recommended.

Sounds of Then / (This is Australia) I think I hear the sounds of then, / And people talking, / The scenes recalled, by minute movement, / And songs they fall, from the backing tape. / That certain texture,that certain smell, To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets, / In brick veneer on financed beds. / In a room, of silent hardiflex / That certain texture, that certain smell, / Brings home the heavy days, / Brings home the the night time swell, Out on the patio we’d sit, / And the humidity we’d breathe, / We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields / Laugh and think, this is Australia. The block is awkward – it faces west, / With long diagonals, sloping too. / And in the distance, through the heat haze, / In convoys of silence the cattle graze. / That certain texture, that certain beat, / Brings forth the night time heat. Out on the patio we’d sit, / And the humidity we’d breathe, / We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields / Laugh and think that this is Australia.
