I’m looking for nominations of what to cull out of my portfolio, I have my eye on a fair bit of my earlier work which well for me isn’t up to scratch. My difficult is I find myself to be my toughest critic so I’d like to open this up to anyone that wants to name any images they think don’t belong, I’ll compare that to my own list and then let the culling begin. I currently have 75 works for sale and I don’t know that feels like too much so I’m looking to cullt 10-25 at a guess, that said I don’t want to be like a overzealous gardener and prun it back to hard. So feel free to jump in and nominate any number of shots to go up onto the chopping block, if a image has already been nominated still list it as more votes will spell doom for the image in question.

I have created these files in Gimp…...........any help would be appreciated and maybe some simple step by step instructions if anyone has the time, please! Thank you in anticipation…..........

I think every photographer has pretty much the same story, when asked, how did you get into photography? All the answers are the same “I have always had a camera in hand, finally decided to make a go at doing it professional because I love it” / I know when I first picked up my camera at the age of nine, I loved it, had it with me all the time. It wasnt until many many years later til a friend finally convinced me to make that HUGE step in allowing anyone and everyone to see what I have shot and go “pro”. I always took the kind words of friends with alittle grain of salt when they would compliment my shots. I knew deep down I didnt quite have it right. I didnt “feel” I had done all I could do. I also felt they were being “nice”, and didnt want to hurt my feelings. So I basically shrugged it off for many years. Thanks to the internet, I had the capability to finally allow more then just friends to see my world through my eye in photograhy. So I finally took that step. / It was a huge step for me, at times I can still feel the butterflies in my stomach when I added a new shot, or even bring out a old one for all to see. Will it be a hit? Is it good enough? Will the public like it and want to buy it? Hell I still feel that way! / So many questions go thru one’s head when they put themselves out there with a passion they truely believe in. / I wont ever forget the very first time someone actually bought something of mine. WOW the rush I got! It just didnt seem Real. I went back a few times, checking out my account status and sure enough, I had finally Sold my work. I never really thought MY work would be good enough that someone I didnt know would want to buy it. I thought about my friends who had said I should take it more seriously from years past, and occassionally I do feel the regret I didnt get into it professionally then. Especially now when everyone has a digital camera and has become instant photographers. I’m here in a world of massive photographers from all over the country, trying to make a living off of it! Which means to me, I need to Learn and produce some of the best shots I possibily can. / The thing tho, it is in my blood, shooting, recording history with this little piece of equipment called a camera. Working on something that is artistic or different. I used to be intimidated by those photographers who had all that expensive gear, and fancy set-ups. At times I would hold my little film camera in hand and think to myself. Hell I can accomplish the same thing with this, as they can with that. But I would still find myself shying away from them, going off into my own little world. I think thru the few years I have openly put my work out in the public. One of the main things I will always remember and that is where I came from, where I started. I still get shy when I am around someone who wants to buy my work. I get sweaty when I am trying to get them a print of the shot they want, making sure it is as perfect as it can possibily be. So many times I feel the words “thank you” isnt enough as they happily go off with MY work!! To this day I still cant find more words to show my gratitude and honor. / I have met quite a few photogs, from all different levels, newbies, mid-ways, and the so called pros. Some have made an impression on me, some I dont ever care to see again. The ones that made the biggest impression on me, where the ones that were just like me, still humbled someone finds their work good enough to buy and show off in their home. The one’s who have snubbed their noses at me due to them having better equipment, or maybe had a few shows, or they are known in their town or known well thru the internet didnt impress me at all. Actually they made me realize exactly what I do NOT want to be as I progess in this field I have chosen. It doesnt matter if you have a throw away camera, or the multi dollar equipment on if you can produce an outstanding shot or not. I think one’s attitude has a lot to do with how successful they are, not what type of equipment they can buy. We all know better equipment does help, but it shouldnt ever change the attitude we all had when we first got started. / The humbleness and gratitude should be the same whether we are just starting or have been in it for 20 or more years. / You dont have to go to school, have a lot of money for high dollar equipment to produce some outstanding work. It’s all in the “eye”, it is how you see things, how you react when someone critiques or compliments. Its all about learning to use the equipment you have and making it work. / No one in this profession should ever lose that humble feeling just because they have improved. There will always be newbies behind you. One should always remember at one time, THEY were newbies. That is something I wont ever forget, the fact I too was once a newbie. Many have helped me, given me tips, they still do. I am like a sponge absorbing all information and tips. I use the input and incorportate it for what works for me and my situation at hand. When I see some people ranting and raving about quality, it really tears me up. It actually pisses me off. No one ever started with the perfectly focused shot, or the perfect exposure. We all started out not knowing a thing. It takes practice, it takes someone helping you along, it takes some honest good feedback, and of course a pat on the back does help build confidence. But we must all learn to listen to what we got Wrong, how else can we improve? In my case, and others who have progressed, Id like to see more helping out the newbies. Instead of ranting and raving about one’s quality of work, help that person. It could be a simple fix, something that person was clueless about and very grateful for the advice. / I had made a pledge to myself years ago when I started on my first public website with so much competition. I wouldnt ever be one of the ones who complained about another’s work. Hell if anything I would rant and rave about how a program used to help a shot is abused with oversaturation on colors or contrast. That is where a rant should be, the abuse of photography…not the learning. The reason I wrote this journal is because of a few forum threads I read. I immediately flashed back to a site I was very happy to get off of because of things just like this. There were more people that had improved and now felt it was their duty to point out flaws instead of helping fix them. / So photographers, even tho you have advanced and you’re more popluar due to your good work. Dont ever forget where you started from. Just because you might be able to buy all the top of line gear, your attitude and humbleness shouldnt ever change. Remember how YOU got started, and where YOU came from. Things YOU had to learn to improve. / But the thing you need to learn the most..is to stay humble, pass on what you have learnt, help someone out instead of spending time complaining, in time your own work will lack that flair. Helping someone in turn helps YOU, helps you remember where you came from, helps you stay sharp on techniques to use…remember….Pass It On. I am hoping that all that read this journal, will remember where and how and what they got started with. If it pissed you off, well to a degree I am sorry, but then to a degree I am not sorry. I hope this journal will make you think of how you might be treating someone who is willing to learn. I dont think there will be one person that does read this, can say..they didnt start out the same way as myself and so many others. / As I tell anyone who is beginning or mid-way, or even pros…. / practice, practice, Practice..and just when you think you have it ALL down…..... Practice some more!

A few weeks ago (or maybe more..) i came to a point where i wanted to have small something (widget, feed, etc) that i can place on my main website (webgrrl.biz) and few other blogs that i have.. something that shows what’s been sold recently from all the places i have my art.. The only quick solution i could come up with (and with no cost) was to make a blog and post the info items, and taking the opportunity to Thank the buyer at the same time.. and so artSOLD was ‘born’ From there, i can then grab the rss feed and utilize it in many different ways.. my favourite being the widget at widgetbox : see here In a marketing and business sense, I’m not sure if this has been done before. We usually make a blog or websites to promote what art we make and whats for sale.. but making a blog/journal of what we’ve sold, i haven’t come across, and i have this belief that people like to know what people are buying, popular etc too.. So i thought, Why Not to have one for what’s sold!? Plus if/when buyer comes across the acknowledgment of thanks, thats a positive energy too…and im all about and for Spreading the Goodness! artSOLD took me a full day to set up, using a free blogger template i went lookin for.. Then i put thinkin caps on to see what ‘widget, promotional’ goodies there is available from all the three main places i associate with.. maybe you want to make one too.. :) Its a nice journal to have, and it makes you work just that bit harder (in promotions especially) so that you get sales, and that means a new post! :)

Hi everyone. I’m writing this journal in the hopes of gaining some advice, hints and perhaps even hearing about your personal stories of how to get into photography as a career. I’ve been a High School English/History/Drama teacher for almost 10years and I’m in need of a career change. At the moment I am only working part-time and won’t have to return to full time work until my youngest son starts school – that will be in 2 years. So I figure I’ve got 2 years to get myself organised. Financially, I’m not in a position to start up my own business therefore I’m going to need to find somebody who wants to employ me. My first questions relate to getting a portfolio/CV organised. What’s the best way to go about it? Do people still have portfolio’s with hard copies or is digital preferred? If hard copies, what size? What should I include in them? How diverse should they be???? Like I said, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, is anyone likely to employ a self-taught photographer?? I haven’t had any official educational training relating to photography, but I am a quick learner! Obviously I have skills as I am a teacher, but will this be enough? So…just hearing your personal stories will give me some ideas. Also, if you think I need a reality check please tell me. I don’t want to kid myself into thinking I could do this as a career if there really is no chance. I’d be much better off trying to convince myself to stay teaching! Thanks in advance for your advice. Oh, just one last thing…..anyone need an assistant???

September 2008 ...That Fish Is Back Again!!!!! :D / Everyone’s artwork looks fantastic and thank you so much for the honor!!! ....and the fish thanks you too… ;) Mixed Media, 20” x 20” A Fish Out Of Water There’s more ocean in fish than fish in the ocean… Nature is wise, but Mankind… just bumbling fools. Learn from the living, watch water in motion, Don’t waste your time staring at small stagnant pools. Fish are content to live their life in water, Water is after all their life’s element. There’s no need for them to be an “achiever,” Living, staying alive… that’s accomplishment. But there was one fish wanting something “better”, He wanted “achievement,” he wanted a “first.” He leapt out of water, fins in quick flutter, Taking fast to the sky… but soon died of thirst… / Poem by Peter. There are so many ways to do a Pop Out effect in Photoshop, I thought I’d show you a really easy way first :-) At some point you are going to have to select that which you want to ‘pop out’, so bear that in mind when you are choosing an image. Also, depending on which parts of the photo you want to pop out will usually determine how much of the image you will have to select. You can start with the image below, or be really sensible and pick something simpler :-) Open the/your image and duplicate by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard. The Layer will be named Layer 1. Click back on the background layer, then press the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette and fill it with white. Click on the top most layer (Layer 1) and select the part/s that you want to pop out of the image. I can’t help you with this part :-) Use your pen tool, magnetic lasso etc., I used quick mask mode and then used the eraser tool to refine it a little bit. I also had another idea originally and that is why you will see the whole bike selected. If you want to do a similar thing to my final piece, you will only have to select the front part of the photo. Once you have your selection, press Ctrl + J on the keyboard and it will put it on a new layer. Go back to Layer 1, clicking on it to make it active and select your rectangular marquee tool. I can’t help you with this part either, cos it will be image dependant. Once you have made your selection, add a layer mask by clicking on the Add Layer Mask at the bottom of the layers palette. You should end up with something similar to the image below. If your selection isn’t how you want it, just go back and make a new selection and try it again. Staying on Layer 1, click on the FX icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose Stroke. I chose black and 2 pixels for this particular image. If you need to tidy up your selection at all, click back on Layer 3 and do what needs to be done. Click on Layer 1 and holding down the Ctrl key, click on Layer 3, right click and select merge layers. Staying on the newly merged layer …. click on the FX icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose Drop Shadow. You can punch in the same settings as I have if you are using this image …. or choose something else. I cropped some from the right hand side of the image, and left it at that. You could click back on the white layer and change the fill colour, add a texture, or another image if you wanted. As I said at the beginning, there are a few different ways that you can do this effect and as I get the time I will add them. Have fun :-)

/ This was just playing with a few different things, and my first attempt at cutting designs into paper. This piece was thick watercolour paper so I blunted two blades! / On my second attempt I tried to organise my design better. It’s hard to successfully translate my paisleys into this technique but I’ll keep trying. I used craft card and it was SO thick! / It casts rad shadows! / And for this one I folded the sheet in half and placed a silhouette over the cut out designs. It’s a very good technique to do if you want to exercise your awareness of negative and positive space. I could keep doing it all night except I have developed horrible sore calluses on my fingers! / I just did this one before and decided to add it here :)

Workflow for rescuing “The Lamp” NB I am writing this for users of Photoshop – although most functions are available in Elements also … I have been asked many times for tips on giving shots a nostalgic feel, and also for advice on rescuing a ‘dud’ shot. ( I seem to get some kind of perverse pleasure from making something from a photo which is apparently useless – maybe is it symbolic!!) So, I have combined both (a ‘rescue’ technique as well as some nostalgic processing) in producing “The Lamp” and, for those who are interested, outlined some of the steps below. Please note this is NOT a traditional tutorial – the process is different for every photo, and each step allows room for personal taste and interpretation – no two people would end up with the same result! Before image After image 1. I first processed the basic shot – curves, sharpening, cropping, cloning out any extraneous bits etc (I purposely chose a jpeg for those who may not be using fancy techniques yet, and one that was definitely quite washed out. Normally I would use a RAW file, and/or some HDR). / 2. Saved it as “The Lamp – basic PS” / 3. Duplicated the background layer / 4. On the copy went to Filter/Find Edges / 5. Right clicked on the ‘find edges’ layer and blended to give it a slightly illustrative look (ie having dark edges and colours a bit desaturated) / 6. Duplicated this layer (Ctrl J if you are using a PC) / 7. Went to Filter/Other/High pass (push the slider to maximum) / 8. In this case it gave the effect I wanted without any further blending. If I didn’t like the effect, I could have right clicked on the high pass layer, and again tried some blending … if at any stage you don’t like any effect you can hit Ctrl/Alt/Z and it will take you back – one step at a time … / 9. Flattened the image. At this stage it was still a little washed out and pale… so / 10. Duplicated the layer / 11. Right clicked on the copy layer and in Blend mode, went to Multiply in the drop down menu / 12. Blended this and toggled the opacity slider till I had a realistic richer looking image / 13. Duplicated the layer again / 14. Went to Edit/Fill – 100% black / 15. Slid the opacity slider back to about 50% / 16. Used the eraser tool, quite large, with feathered edges and about 20% opacity, to wipe across the image a few times and ‘paint with light’ at an appropriate angle (tricky – needs to compliment the lighting already on the subject in the image – I am still practicing this myself) / 17. When satisfied I flattened the image and did another “Save as” (you never know – it pays to have a few variations to come back to just in case!) calling it “The Lamp – high pass multiply” / 18. From here on it is even more “trial and error”! I duplicated the layer again and did a little burning on shadowed areas, a little dodging where I felt the light should be emphasized, and with an omni light in Filters/Render, finally added a tiny bit of light to the lampshade to give the impression of a glow. I don’t necessarily look on this final image as one of my masterpieces, but do feel it is a credible attempt at rescuing what would otherwise be left “on the cutting room floor”. I hate to throw anything out, and that includes washed out photos! With thanks, and dedicated to all who have helped me along the way … :)

I can’t remember where I first saw this tutorial, but its been around for a couple of years and it ’s a very quick and easy fix for blown out skies. You can borrow my horrible image to practise on if you like, copyright is mine etc., The image was taken on an overcast, hazy day and probably really wouldn’t be worth keeping, but there will be images that you have with a blown out sky that are worth keeping. Open the image in Photoshop and duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard or dragging it to the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. On the side toolbar select the rectangular marquee tool – reference the image below and make your selection is in a similar place. You can selecting the blown out sky and down into the tree area to get any patches that may be showing through the trees. You should have the marching ants showing. Create a Selective Colour adjustment layer by clicking on the little ying yang symbol at the bottom of the layers palette and selecting Selective Colour. The marching ants will disappear, that’s OK. At the bottom of the selective colour dialogue choose Absolute (see image) and from the drop down menu at the top choose White. Fiddle with the sliders until you get a colour that you like – you can make the colour quite strong because you will be able to take the opacity down later and change the colour altogether if you like (the joys of adjustment layers). I’ve gone a little nuts with my colour to show you how well it works. Make sure your f/ground colour is set to black and the b/ground to white. Click on the mask to make sure you are working on it, then go to Filter>Render>Clouds – you can just click on clouds, or you can hold down the shift key when you click on clouds to get a more intense result. After you have applied the clouds filter you can also use Ctrl + F to get a different effect. I doubled clicked on the Selective Colour thumbnail and changed the colour, I also took the layer opacity down to 65%. Here is the final image and then a comparison image – Have fun!

If, like me you’re trying to improve all the time (not always succeeding :) ) and get some exposure and success sales-wise then you may want to check out the following sites for inspiration and also ways to direct people to your portfolio on RB: Competitions and other places to submit (some of which mentioned by various people in forums and journals) – in no particular order: Design by Humans – a well regarded ‘vote to print’ site – also has some good resources like ‘realistic’ templates to use for ‘model’ images. Tee invaders – A new competition site (haven’t checked it out yet) KingStrike – A slightly different concept – People buy the rights to your design for printing Teenormous – A great collection of shirts from around the web Threadless – No news here – everyone knows about Threadless. As I found it’s not easy to get into!! – lots of competition. It’s a community of sorts like RB, and You can add your own blog feed in your Threadless profile (so you can point it to your own blog, or your works on RB) – submission kit also has resources for ‘model’ images Shirt.w00t – another rolling competition with different challenges TeeFury – one a day – vote etc Teextile – This is brand new, and is another ‘one a day’ site. May be a good time to get something in there… Caponocca – Another competition site – $2500 for printed shirts 6 dollar shirts – Currently accepting submissions (2 colour designs) Mysoti – A fairly new POD (print on demand) site similar (in some ways) to RB, but without the community. Don’t know about the quality but the I’ve sold a couple there. Full Metal Shirt – Another competition site… Uneetee – Another US-based vote and print site Emptees – An aggregator, community and blog for your own and other’s designs Rumplo – another aggregator of other people’s designs. Unfortunately they don’t accept design suggestions from RB, but if you do a little digging you might find a way… StumbleUpon – Social bookmarking – Add your bubblesite, your blog etc – some people have reported success from this. Feedburner – Syndicate and publicise your ‘feeds’. This could be your blog, your works on RB, or pretty much anything. Feedburner allows you to get stats on the feeds, publish them elsewhere, and also create all sorts of widgets for subscribing etc. I’ve started putting the ‘stay in touch’ section in my posts to see how it goes… (might post more detail on this as it’s a bit more technical) I love your t-shirt – a sort of blog but also a place to submit designs to get seen A better tomorrow – a German design competition site Spring Leap – Another competition site (haven’t really looked yet) ModernTee – Another competition site ($250 per design) oh yeah – Zazzle and Cafepress if you want to sell mouse mats ;) FFFFound – Image bookmarking blogs that you may want to look at to find the sites yourself Competeetion – This is a great place to find out about other sites and competitions going on around the web. Hide your arms – A pretty good T blog – with the most useful post about basically every other T shirt blog. (that saves me writing the rest out under here!) TCritic – Another blog – not very frequent Fashionably geek – Clothing and accessories for the ‘well-dressed geek’ The Fresh Stock – Street wear and art TeeBurb – Tee designer community, blog – integrates with Twitter Teecraze – Nice simple syndication blog RB Tee Designers Sites / Blogs Redbubble home pages – find the historical home pages here Grandia Design – Clothing and interviews with fellow RB’ers (including ME) from the excellent Grandia Design Redbubble Twitter Twibe Bubbling under the surface – Unofficial RB Blog Diesel Laws – The mightly Diesel, now with a new full stop. At one of those points in my life where if I don’t walk away from the bubble for a while I’ll close my account, which is kinda shitty, because this place and everyone in it has become a type of substitute family for me over the past year or so. / / It just feels a bit sad to be around at the moment is all… / / So I’ll just take some time out and take a breather. / / Who knows, maybe I’ll actually be able to write something while I’m away? :-) / / Will miss you all. / / I’ll leave my account floating for now until I decide what to do with it. / / Ciao 4 Now / Jennifer B / xox

Hi All, / There’s something I’ve been grumbling about for more than a couple of months now, I’ve done posts, written to RB and the best answer I ever got was not enough band width. / / Then it came to me like a “A Bolt Outa’ The Blue!!!! Not thirty minutes ago. / / I did it, and it worked Great!!! / / Most of the time I direct NON Redbubblers to my Bubblesite, I feel it has a much more professional look, for someone you are trying to entice to buy. / / My beef has been, there is no way to have the calendars available on that page. Well there is, just put in a link!!!!! / / Check it out, it works great!!!!!!!!! / / I hope this helps someone. / - / Bob

Namaste Everyone As some of you might know a few of us are rather concerned about David Holmes as he appeared to have dissappeared. Lyndy has just informed me that, She has finally heard some news on David, its not full details but it appears he was hit by a car on Saturday Night and is currently in an induced coma. Please can you Lovely Angels send him your loving healing energy and keep him in your prayers. Thank you for taking the time to read this . In Love & Light Namaste Jilli HUGS xxx

RedBubble’s “Community” gave me a shout-out for Inside Solo Magazine Wow, so nice for the magazine to be recognized in this way. It is a lot of work, but also a joy to put together. If it were not for Richard Sunderland, Joanne Bradley, Linda Ridpath, Elizabeth Bravo, Mel Davies, and Beth Plastino, who all contribute feature writing, regularly, there is no way that the publication would be at its present stage or have the dimension that makes it a valuable resource, as well as an enjoyable read. Look how they laid out those covers side by side. Aren’t they cute? They look great together. Such beautiful cover art by Stephen McLaren, Bev Langby, Dorina Costras, and Anita Inverarity (left to right). How could they help but be beautiful. Well, I think someone is reading them. My domain transferred 11 GB just in the last 2 weeks. Same 2 weeks before. Thank you! And thank you RedBubble for recognizing the thought and effort that goes into sharing goodness through this publication. F.A. Moore
