The home of the Ottoman Empire, in Istanbul, Thrace, Turkey. Here is an archway which I photographed and digitally reworked/painted to give it a traditional painted look. It is a fantastic palace to visit.

The Ottoman caravanserai Cinci Han in the center of the old city of Safranbolu in the Black Sea region of Turkey is the largest building in town. Cinci Hoca let built the Hostel for traveling merchants in the 17th century. He was Chief Military Judge under the reign of Sultan Ibrahim I. (r.1640-1680). The dimensions of the building can guess how much Safranbolu benefited economically and culturally from the caravans, located at one of the main trade routes “Istanbul-Bolu-Amasya-Tokat-Sivas” / / © Photo and text by Jens Helmstedt / Profile . This grand throne might look as if it emerged from the fifteenth-century palace of some Oriental potentate … but no, that ain’t the case. This stunning piece of furniture, redolent of a grand ottoman, was shot in December 2007, just after it had been crafted in a Singapore store. Yes, I was given permission to shoot in the store. I was fascinated by the intricacy of the metalwork and I composed this tight frame to highlight the superb craftsmanship, but also to include a glimpse of the striped material that encases an ample cushion. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my work in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/60 sec, ISO 400, focal length 98mm. Featured in AT THE STORE, October 2009. Interior shot of the architecture of the Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha in Cairo, Egypt. It’s the most visible mosque in Cairo and was built between 1830 and 1848 by Mohamed Ali Pasha, in memory of his son, Tusun Pasha, who died in 1816. The mosque today is still officially a mosque but is something of a tourist destination in Cairo and an incredible place to sit and soak in the style of this Ottoman mosque.
One last interior shot of the Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha – a simply gorgeous early 19th century mosque in Cairo, Egypt. This shot gives you a sense of the scale and design of the ceiling. Virtually all of my shots inside were wide angle for a reason!
An exterior view of the Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha. This mosque was built from 1830 to 1848 by Mohamed Ali Pasha in memory of his eldest son who died in 1816. It’s still a functioning mosque but because of its age and prominence is priimarily a tourist destination, but a wonderful place to get an idea of what a mosque is like and soak in the Ottoman architecture.
