  • “So tired, haven’t slept a wink…” was featured in the group Dimensions Look at this red eye! (well, when you can zoom in more, it’s also red in the inside, as if he hasn’t slept in days). Title inspired by the Beatles song. Photo taken in San Diego Zoo, June 2008. / Canon PowerShot S5 IS, 1/100 s, f/3.5, ISO 200 The Wood Duck or Carolina Duck (Aix sponsa) is a medium-sized perching duck. A typical adult is about 19 inches in length with an average wingspan of 29 inches. This is about three-quarters of the length of an adult Mallard. It shares its genus with the Asian Mandarin Duck. The adult male has distinctive multi-colored iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. When swimming, wood ducks bob their head back and forth in a jerking motion, which makes them easy to spot. Their breeding habitat is wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes or ponds in eastern North America, the west coast of the United States and western Mexico. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting boxes in wetland locations if available. The wood duck tends to fly for prolonged periods of time after reproducing. Their personality is shy and skittish. (Wikipedia) / /

  • “Prayer” was featured in the groups / Statues and Such / Prize Challenges!! * / *Core [C.O.R.E] / and First Things The photo of this marvellous statue was taken in the Bell Tower of the Crystal Cathedral, Garden Grove, Orange County, California. This is a small circular prayer chapel in which you find a ring of 33 marble pillars, lining the wall… (33 for the years that Christ lived – I found out on the Internet). In the center you find a prayer altar with this rotating acrylic sculpture of Christ. There is a light that comes up through the sculpture, and at some angles it breaks into all the colors of the rainbow. Canon PowerShot S5 IS, 1/15 s, f/2.7, f/2.7

  • “Old Jewish Cemetery (Prague)” was featured in the groups Historic Landmarks of Europe and Bagels and Lox – Jewish Photographers Unite! 1668 views (9 November 2009) Photo taken with a Canon PowerShot S70 camera. / Must admit: I got quite emotional while taking photos in that unique cemetery, which brought up a lot of thoughts and feelings concerning my people, the Jews. I got emotional again while going through my file, looking for the photo I would post here. Following is info from two Internet sources: One of the most impressive sights in Prague [Czech Republic] is the Old Jewish cemetery in Josefov, the former Jewish ghetto. This cemetery was used from 1439 to 1787 and it is the oldest existing Jewish cemetery in Europe. The Nazis made it a policy to destroy Jewish cemeteries, sometimes using the tombstones for target practice, but Hitler ordered that this cemetery be left intact, since he was planning to build a Jewish museum in Prague after all the Jews in Europe had been exterminated according to his diabolical plan. There are more than 100,000 Jews buried in this small plot, the graves being layered 12 deep in some places. This is not unusual for European cemeteries where space is at a premium. In Germany where the graves are also 12 layers deep, the tombstones mark only the top layer of the buried coffins. In the Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov, there are around 12,000 tombstones, crowded closely together with almost no grass between them. / Source: Josefov The Old Jewish Cemetery lies in the Josefov (the Jewish Quarter of Prague). It was in use from the early 15th century (the oldest preserved tombstone, the one of Avigdor Kara, dates back to 1439) until 1787. Its ancestor was a cemetery called “The Jewish Garden”, which was found in archaeological excavations under the Vladislavova street, New Town. The numbers of grave stones and numbers of people buried there are uncertain, because there are layers of tombs. However, it has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 graves. The most important personalities buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery are Yehuda ben Bezalel known as the Maharal Rabbi Löw (d. 1609), Mordechai Maisel (d. 1601), David Gans (d. 1613) a David Oppenheim (d. 1736). / Wikipedia / / /

  • ~ Twin Falls ~ Trail head at Camp Orr in the Buffalo River Wilderness, Arkansas Usa. / The beautiful picturesque Twin Falls now has an added beauty right beside it due to all the rain we have had in the last month. Shot this photo in the pouring rain, using my uni pod, and with my camera on auto, and of course the umbrella was a must! LOL! It was quite the challenge steadying the camera, juggling the umbrella, all the while with the lightning flashing, and the forest canape swirling in the strong winds of the storm, which caused tornadoes in many surrounding areas. By the time I finished this shoot I was soaked to the bone, but this shot and the many others I shot were all worth every moment. BUT MY CAMERA REMAINED DRY!!!!!! / I am real happy with the silky water, as I have no means to set my camera for timed shots. / Taken 5-8-09
