The throw-up for the Kirkwall Ba game on New Year’s Day 2008. This is a close-up version of this photo: http://www.redbubble.com/people/orcadia/art/632830-1-the-throw-up / I’m not sure which version I prefer – one gives more of a sense of movement and immediacy, the other shows more ‘scene setting’ with some of the street – and some people standing on a roof to watch! The Ba is played every Christmas and New Year’s Day in Kirkwall, Orkney. It’s a kind of traditional game of mass football, played in the streets of the town between the Uppies and the Doonies. Throw-up is from the Merkat Cross in front of St Magnus Cathedral at 1pm, and the game often takes several hours to reach a conclusion. The Uppie goal is a wall and the Doonie goal is the harbour basin! You can see more Ba photos here and more of my work at / http://www.orcadiaimages.co.uk

The sweat cloud combined with the single raised hand made this shot look quite miraculous.
The name Spirit Dancer has both depth and meaning, being blessed by the Katzie First Nation on the West Coast of Canada. The canoe is made from fibre glass, carbon fibre and wood and measures a total of 42 feet long with a beam of 67 inches. It was made in Canada and is the largest Eastern Canadian canoe. Chris and Barbara Cooper are the owners and brought the Spirit Dancer to Orkney in July, 2009. This photo was taken from the crow’s nest of the Oostershelde – a three masted schooner – when it was in Orkney. Photoshop was used to merge two photos so that Chris was in view at the same time as the Spirit Dancer.
Scara Brae is a prehistoric town of some 300 years ago. It was dug unto the earth and when abandoned centuries ago was forgotten. In the 19th century a storm washed away the covering and it was again on show, and is well worth a visit, which is why I saw this. It is beside the footpath to Scara Brae, and was a grain mill built probably near the start of the C19. It like the farmhouse you can see in the background was probably nowhere near the water. The mill is suffering the same fate as Scara Brae has and the farmhouse probably will. The sea has started to destroy it. Taken with Pentax LX camera and 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome film.
Stromness is port of the Mainland (Orkney) from which the biggest cargo baots go to Scrabster on Scotland. (We were taken by the fact that Scrabster for the people of Orkney was on the island to the south of the Mainland.) The day we were going it started well before dawn at about 5 o’clock. That was our time to prove we wanted to go, but we then waited for about 3/4 hour while they loaded the sheep they were also taking on the trip. This is the sheep coming down the main road of Stromness. Taken on a Pentax LX with High Sped Ektachrome SA 3200 (which I never saw again presumably because people did not like the grain and contrast)
