Every year the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden hosts the Colombian Orchid Society Annual Orchid Exposition. As Colombia is host to over 2400 indigenous varieties of Orchids, it is a feast for the eyes and the camera. I can’t get enough of the beauty of these flowers. The only factor is the rain. I managed to get a load of photos before it just drowned out everything again. Here is one that is indigenous to Colombia The Masdevallia Coccinea – White Orchid. / /

Anguloa clowesii is native to Colombia and Venezuela. It grows in the mountains with very moist conditions at the roots. There is a dry season, and this coincides with the dropping of their deciduous leaves. The flowers emerge at the base of the newest growths in late winter to early summer and are large and are the reason this plant is called the Tulip Orchid. / / /

Featured in the group Nature’s Wonders in July 2009 / Dendrobium smilliae is native to Thailand and has canes 18 to 24 inches in height that produce clusters of flowers in colors of green, white and pink. The flowers last a month or so and can appear from the year before leafless canes. This plant is a reliable bloomer and does well in intermediate to warm conditions. / The genus Dendrobium contains six various orchid classifications, called sections, which identifies specific characteristics and growing requirements of the orchids in these classes. There are many groups, clubs and societies and over 20,000 varieties. Many orchids have succulent characteristics. They store water and nutrients in pseudobulbs, leaves and/or other parts of their anatomy. Fresh orchids and other tropical flowers create a unique tropical atmosphere perfect for a traditional or modern wedding theme here on Maui and are very beautiful woven into Haku Lei. Hardy terrestrial orchids include some the rarest & showiest perennials for the garden. These deciduous plants are indigenous to the temperate zones Eurasia and North America. They require woodland conditions for cultivation, preferring shade to part-shade and rich, well-draining soil; somewhat moist. Hardy orchids bloom at 3 – 6 years of age, depending upon the species.
