In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Top Featured Piece Of The Day in the Live, Love, Dream group, 12th Nov, 2008. / Featured in the Rivers, Lakes and Dams group, 12th Nov, 2008. Early one January morning, I got out of bed before dawn and headed in to London and the Thames. I knew where I wanted to get the shot from. I set up the tripod and camera and waited. I hoped the sun would be visible, but had nothing more to base the possibility on other than the sky had been red at sunset the night before. My luck was in!

What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

Sedona, Arizona, USA 2008 Was so focussed on getting to this river before sunset , such a rushed hiked that I lost my bearings on the return trip and nearly spent the night out here !! Was rather daunting but incredibly beautiful nonetheless. I now make sure I have plenty of time either way, perhaps I should invest in a compass and a star chart LOL

I was delighted to catch the calm surface for reflections, as the low rising sun was casting its first orange glow over the autumn colors.

A few miles passed Tortilla Flats, which is outside of Apache Junction, Arizona, this wonderful little oasis pops into view, part of Salt River. Although it is nearly Christmas, the vibrant yellow foliage remains. / Shot with Olympus Stylus 720SW auto, handheld.

This is definately one of the most beautiful places of the world, at the most beautiful time of the day :) Noosa River, Noosaville, Queensland. 1000’s of Rainbow Lorikeets fly above, in their afternoon social time, hanging out in the tall Gum Trees. If you stand within 50 metres of the tree, you can’t hear yourself think for the noise, it’s so wonderful an experience! This colour happens most nights, but this cloud formation does not happen often at all, in my opinion, the perfect sky :) I hope you enjoy this shot, as much as I enjoyed shooting this one. Available Large, and best viewed large. Actual print size is 1600mm x 1000mm. Canon 50D, 10mm, no filters needed, as this was the true colour of the evening.

Loved this boat sitting so calm on the Noosa River, as I was sitting there waiting for the sunset colours to intensify, this seagull started feeding off bait fish on the surface.. Bit of a shame he wasn’t facing me, but still happy :) Noosa River, Noosaville, Queensland. Canon 50D, 14mm. Available large, and definately best viewed large!

As most of you know now, the East Coast of Australia was covered by a thick blanket of desert dust, was actually top soil, dried out by the severe drought conditions of the past several months in outback New South Wales. Thousands of tonnes of valuable top soil, out to sea. Didn’t hit the Sunshine Coast of Queensland till about 12 mid-day on the Wednesday, 23rd September, 2009. Was amazing, one minute it’s clear, then you can’t see anything about 500 metres away.. The sky was glowing orange, and the sun looked like the moon! In this shot, I managed to capture an eagle, soaring very low, as they hunted in the dusty conditions. The wind was also strong, and these beautiful birds could do their entire hunt without beating a wing! I hope you enjoy this shot, I know there is millions of shots out there of this event, and it probably will not happen again for many many years.. Canon 50D, 17mm. No filters or colour adjustment to this shot. this is as it looked, creepy! Available Large and best viewed Large!
