Featured in “Hawai’i ~ Aloha Na’au” – June 2009. Imagine… very early morning at the “end of the road” in the northeastern section of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Before sunrise there are several lines of bright orange/red flowing down the side of the Kilauea volcano. After sunrise the lines become very faint but wisps of smoke curl up in the distance, seemingly only a few miles away. Hiking out takes longer than expected, following the old, cooled and very uneven lava flows toward the smoke. Eventually you come upon the scene of an active lava flow passing bushes and a solitary tree by the town that had been wiped out by flows some years before. The heat is intense and is increased substantially by the numerous small fires that break out and then dissipate. The lava advances very slowly until it begins covering even more of the road surface of the abandoned town, along its relentless path to the sea. Thor’s Hammer peeks up above the rest of the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon and the distant Black Mountain range can be seen near the horizon. Thor’s Hammer is located down Sunset Trail near Queen’s Garden. Erosion has carved the colorful limestone and sandstone formations into spires, fins, and arches, now referred to as hoodoos.

Captured high above Cherry Creek Reservoir outside of Denver Colorado, cosidering how cold it was, the warmth of the colors from the sunrise kept me a little on the warm side! The Marina lies empty below, awaiting Spring to return, which isn’t to far off I suppose. Anyways, I kinda lucked out on this shot considering I was standing on a 2 lane road with no pull off’s….thank goodness for no traffic! / —-John

I have been waiting many years to visit Page, Arizona and see the Navajo Slot Canyons. The Upper Antelope Canyon was our first visit and we really enjoyed the spectacular shapes and colors of the sandstone.
