February 2009 brought wind and cold temperatures to our farm in Lancaster County, PA. Blowing from the west, the wind created waves that decorated the east edge of the pond with intricate ice sculptures that man can only attempt to duplicate. Lit by the falling sun, they glowed in a manner that appears much more welcoming than the bitter temperatures actually arranged for. : )

Straight out of the camera. “Tukturjuit” is the statue of the Caribou located in Bowring Park in St John’s Newfoundland Canada. It is a replica of the one in Beaumont Hamel, France which honours the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who fought there in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 incurring huge casualties. The statue is the work of Basil Gotto and was donated by Major Howard Green in 1928. FYI: Inuit people call the Great Bear constellation Tukturjuit, or stars representing caribou.
