For the longest time I dreamed of a wild adventure in Italy. In April 2008 that dream became an extraordinary reality. We arrived in Rome, jetlagged after two very long flights from Australia. So we jumped on the open air Tourist bus to take a look around. It wasn’t long before we got tired of seeing the picture postcard tourist sites and jumped off to go exploring the back streets of Rome on foot. Down one of the historic side streets we found a beautiful secret garden. At first we weren’t sure if it was a private sanctuary or business entity as it was so quiet. In the corner under a magnificent tree, a talented craftsman quietly sculpted his wares. So captivated by his work, he never raised his head to acknowledge us and he never spoke a word. So we tentatively explored his garden, tip toeing around the sculptures trying not to disturb the master at work. This photo is of the gate that initially captured our attention and filled our imagination with stories of oracles and gateways to other worlds. The heightened blue tones adding a magical quality to the scene. In my imagination, this sculpture is a great oracle who peers into your heart to see where the truth lies. If you pass his test, the gates magically open into the wonderous world of il giardino segreto – the Secret Garden. (c) sooz2008

I know, I went really out there ‘surreal’ here, but it was so much fun. I rigged Keith’s pyramid, grabbed Mick’s gull, and shoved everything onto this vast desert planet with the crazy lightning storm…my brain is fried just thinking about this… ;-)

This is another bird from my oracle deck, “the Owl.” / In my oracle the Owl indicates learning and wisdom and depending on the direction it lies can mean wisdom from the past, a teacher, or lessons learned form the past, or an upcoming test. This started out as a pencil drawing, and then transferred to a transparency and then painted in acrylics.

Oracle’s Tears is a wildflower which blooms only on rocky outcrops of Clymaiad, the sacred mountain in which the Oracle is said to dwell. Prior to the Jimat, the Formation, these rare flowers were nearly extinct due to heavy pollution. They usually grow alongside an insectivorous plant with dark maroon leaves (each of which bears numerous sticky threads to trap insects) which was once known as Blood-On-The-Stone, but after Khazarizhad came down again from Clymaiad, having met with the Oracle for three days, a legend grew that he had been pierced by bladed weapons and lost his blood on the mountain, and it grew these plants, hence its post-Jimat name of Sysoshant’s Blood. / Cerean blood is dark maroon. In addition, both these plants do not cultivate, though Khazarizhad has managed to grow some in his Syshant’s Garden, using his advanced knowledge of plants and what they need to thrive.

The Egyptians imagined Re to have created humankind from his tears as they fell to earth. He was also attributed with the creation of the intellect and higher reasoning. On cutting his phallus, perhaps in an act of circumcision, he is said to have drawn drops of blood that became Hu (authority) and Sia (the mind). This is a bird form my Oracle “As the Crow Flies”. This is the Eagle. He represents Power and authority and also success. / Eagle in the North – indicates Another’s Success or power and authority. / Eagle in the South – indicates you will be successful or a powerful/ authority on the issue. / Eagle in the East – Power/ Success will be a factor in the future. / Eagle in the West – an authority or a past accolade. This picture of the Atlantic shore has been taken in Algarve, Portugal. Do you see two huge faces of oracles on the rock? Sure, I had no doubt as the whole rock is nothing but two faces. That time the ocean was quiet. Soft small wavelets made it a chill-out space. Perhaps two oracles whispered something important, however, my inner sense was inhibited by trivial everyday nothings so that I could not hear them. It often happens that we miss a key to the door of secret when we realize we are facing it. What a galling loss…

Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The Queen of Wands” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck. I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way. I see Wands as a Fire suit, with a Southern direction, situated at noon during a blazing summer. Wands signify the spark of creativity, energy and growth, and I wanted my Queen of Wands to be truly regal and somewhat fierce. Believe me, I had no idea when I painted her that she would end up looking so much like our First Lady! She says, “I Am”, “I Will” and “I Know”. I envisioned all the women in the Wands suit as being African, and this Queen is seated in her throne with her sunflower amidst the most creative of endeavors ever: the pyramids. Her wand is carved with the zodiac symbols Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. All wands are depicted in hot colors and earth tones. This original artwork is copyright Ramona Szczerba 2006.
