A sepia coloured picture of a graveyard in Whitby, UK, with the ruined abbey in the background
What does it mean? The question is: what should it mean? It should mean that we’re unique, we think for ourselves, and we’re going to make a difference in the world. But that scares some people. So tell those people that it means that everyone should just try to be the same. That way they’ll get out of your face. Be normal, it’s your disguise.
Sometimes Being Normal just isn’t enough. At those times you must be ULTRA Normal! I am, right now, for instance. Plus, I really love that show.
This is a poem every one thinks about but few are brave enough to write.
I once sat down and thought about all those who believe we owe apologies for the mistakes our ancestors made, but in the end only our ancestors owe apologies to each other not, and this is the poem that came from that thought process
Liberty and justice may meant for all, but that doesn’t mean it’s doled out in equal amounts, or that it’s even available to all, for that matter.
For all those who live in struggle against oppression and struggle…
strength behind fragility I took this photo by request by local band Sidd & His Self Esteem. They wanted to dabble in a multi-sensory experience through their music in a gig and showcase. The theme was “the oppression of women”, and I decided to use my oriental roots and play on what I know happens through our customs. The result is quite cantonese soap opera.
oil on canvas / This Painting was a commissioned piece for this passage of scripture. / Luke 4:18-19 / “The spirit of the lord is upon me to preach good news to the poor, sight to the blind, release for the captives and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” / A little explanation: / You will find 12 sections to represent one year – ‘the year of the Lord’s favour’. / Then I set to work on what would be in each of the 12 parts? / One day I was writing out a shopping list and I started to write what I’d need in order to really live this passage… or what I had already perhaps… / Spirit, Light, Voice, Faith, Uncertainty, Hope, Hands, Water, Oil, Feet, Strength, Boldness… / This is a great sending forth… an annointing… a comissioning… / I realised that I had all that it takes and that it would take all that I have in order to live according to this bold sending out…. / Starting from the top left hand corner you will find water… I think, living in Australia, i am so very much aware of how precious water is for life and how water is definitely good news for the poor. Next you will find Hope, the small window of hope at the top signifies that there is always hope, even in the darkest places. / In the top right hand corner you will find Hands, these are actually a painting of a man’s hands that had just saved a life. We can use our hands for so much good in the world and from small things done by hand, incredble things can be achieved. I also think these hands relate so well to the Homeless man’s hands in the bottom left hand corner and therefore connect the painting. / The green is for boldness – if you look closely at the original artwork you can see the word Boldness written in there, I find green such a difficult colour to work with and it takes extreme boldness for me to paint with green… a step out of a comfort zone! / The bubble looking circle is for Strength… sometimes we take strength for granted. What is strength is all contexts, physical, emotional, spiritual etc…? Like a bubble… perhaps it is my interpretation that strength is a gift and it can exist simultaneously as both tangible and intangible in our personal awareness. Voice is represented with words – written and lifted up… we need to have voices for the poor, the oppressed, the captives, the refugees, the neglected, the abused, the blind, the sick, the forgotten… / The child with questioning eyes represents Faith, she has seen the world for what it really is and she looks to us. Then we have oil, oil for annointing – for mission… but I chose to place a woman in this section who represents the middle east, here is a woman who has seen so much devastation in the world because of oil and money and power and war. / Light is represented by a shadow of us, and just how much darkness we walk in, we need to shine light into that darkness. The Homeless man represents Uncertainty – seems a bit like the odd word out in the list – but I like it… its says so much about what it means to be human in all our brokenness – but we are all connected! It’s about not having all the answers but being able to take notice and to see reality in front of us… may the oppressed go free because we choose to step out and take risks! I think Spirit is pretty self explanitory – but its about us all being in this together for the good of all humankind… this is a crowd that can achieve amazing things together!!! / The last section of the painting represents Feet… Feet of readiness to take us where we need to be… it may be just one step at a time… but we have to start walking and taking action. The Spirit is upon us as you can see linking through every section of the painting. I hope that this has helped you understand the work a little more. Thank you for taking time to read this!
Chaos and disorder. / For those who can feel the beauty of the mess. Naples, Italy
It’s some time since I entered a pic in the horror genre. Sadly this one is not really fantasy. A liberator, a deliverer from minority oppression. yeh right! Talk about ”...out of the frying pan and into the fire”
An ode to all the nine to five workers.

Homomonument, Amsterdam Part of a monument comprising three triangles representing past, present and future. Designed by Karin Daan, 1987. The sign reads “Commemorates all women and men ever oppressed and persecuted because of their homosexuality. / Supports the International Gay and Lesbian Movement in their struggle against contempt, discrimination and oppression. / Demonstrates that we are not alone. / Calls for permanent vigilance.”
This image was taken in Ballard, a section of Seattle with mixed residential and industrial use. It spanned a railroad line. The barbed wire and look of it created a symbol that I could not ignore…..
....I wanted to capture the essence of the struggle of artists who perform or do art despite circumstances. For me, still playing is very personal… since my father banned us children from learning musical instruments… He didn’t think it was a good career move, to be in the arts, being traumatized earlier by our great granddad who left his family penniless since he died a poor pianist. For me, this is rebellion against creative oppression. Although i did not follow a musical path, I entered the realm of visual arts. And it doesn’t matter where you put the artist, or whatever the situation. True artists will create no matter what.
Its been oppressively hot lately, as anyone in AU can attest. This morning I woke long before dawn, and the temperature was already in the high 20s. Took myself down to Nobbys for some photographs. Coming in from the burbs meant that I had to leave home before first light so I had no idea what I would find. At 5:30am, what I found was a cloud ceiling which felt as if it would collapse at any moment, and a sun below the horizon which was already making its presence felt in the cloud, on the ocean and in the air. Oppressive humidity sent me scurrying home not long after… not to mention the dozens of flies which appeared as if by magic from nowhere as the dawn brightened. [Note to self: Don’t forget the aerogard next time]. / / Pentax K200D / ISO 200 / f/8 / Shutter 1/30 / Focal Length 18mm This photograph has been accepted for the Pentax gallery! /
The Scream is basically a piece about violence against women, a subject that really sensitizes me not only for being a woman, but also for being human and for dreaming and working for a better world based on respect and equality. I didn’t want a piece that was oppressing or showed only the pain of the violence or abuse. I wanted something dynamic, that could have a “voice”, that could help people to reflect about how to change things. The symbolism of the piece is quite simple and direct. There’s a dual figure in the center. She might be the same woman in two different attitudes, if you like. The red-haired one is scared and in pain. She holds her bleeding heart and wears a mask to keep herself hidden from judgment or other losses. She might be the one who was raped in a party after drinking too much, the one who was abused for a family member but preferred to hide in order to do not cause disturbances in the family, the one who was beaten for her husband but kept silent for fear of losing her children. She might be one of the Congo women. She might be me, or you. The black-haired woman doesn’t wear a mask. She is screaming – although sometimes I think that she is in fact singing. What she releases from within herself is a bird, red as life. Is the desire for freedom from a world conquered by force, not love. She screams her right to be treated as a human being instead of a second-class citizen, as a partner instead of a subordinate. Her right to express her own ideas and have their own attitudes without being demonized for them. There are also masks at the bottom, a pile of masks without faces behind them. They once belonged to women who decided to scream instead of keep silent and anonymous. That decided to stop pretending that that’s how the world is and there’s nothing that can be done to change it. But there’s so much one can do just by having a voice… And use it to demand respect for being human is urgent.

I photographed Antonio in 1977. I was working on a story pertaining to abominable housing of illegal alien migrant farm workers in Homestead, Florida. Basically they were slave labor, housed in concentration camp environments. Enjoy your next tomato! Nikon FTn, 50mm f.14, TriX film.
This work began as a self portriat, and b-cuz of how full of chaos it was and how aware of IT I was it turned into a very detailed and cramed packed piece. Please excuse anything that may seem offensive It does not portray pain being inflicted on anyone but myself on the inside.
