A Victorian Artists muse! She started as a doodle and just grew – i was thinking of artists muses and had been reading a book on the Moulin Rouge at the time and seeing nobody could ever beat Kylie as an absinthe fairy, this started to take form. I used the colours of red and green to indicate the poppy itself…and i wanted her to arrive in a shower of gold and silver to signify the beauty, high and rush that opium addicts are supposed to experience on first meeting with their chosen substance…or muse…i personally dabble in vodka and am yet to create a suitable fairy :) Acrylic, enamel and feathers painting by Kate Image copyright © 2003, KB – of www.elegantsavage.co.uk. I guess Tasmanians are pretty much immune to the beauty in these poppy fields. To me seeing them for the first time they were spectacular.
Digital photographic composition of 3 of my own photos, using the PS filter “polar coordinates”.
Please see here for more details Excuse the size, its really rather epic!
Saw a great swath of poppies in the distance. But do you think I could find them. With dusk fast approching I at last found this small field. There was a gusty breeze though so no possibility of macros.
The very Beautiful Opium Poppy, straight from the camera, no messing of any kind., and no abstracting, haha

The medicinal poppy industry has now been operating in Tasmania for over 30 years, and the State produces approximately 50% of the world’s legal poppy crop. The industry size has been fluctuating in the past three years with productivity increasing with the use of superior cultivars, advances in production technology and selection of better growing areas. There were record harvests achieved in the 2001/02 season creating a stockpile of raw material. In late 2002 the world prices decreased, reducing the total expected value of the industry to Tasmania from the current crop. The area planted to poppy production in Tasmania for the 2002/03 season was about 17,500 hectares and involved 1,150 licensed growers. The estimated farm gate value to growers was approximately $65 million. The industry’s total value to the Tasmania economy is expected to be about $200 million. Tasmania also produces poppy seed for culinary purposes. Poppies are grown under licences issued by the Poppy Advisory and Control Board. The poppy (Papaver somniferum) is unique, as it is the only plant capable of biologically synthesising the alkaloid morphine. It also produces at least twenty other alkaloids of which the most important are codeine and thebaine. These opiate alkaloids are the raw materials used in the production of many analgesic preparations and related medicinal compounds.
The poppy fields are a-blooming in Tasmania, and this one is just a short drive up the road from my house.
A Mien woman scrapes raw opium from slit poppy seed pods in her field in the mountains of northern Thailand. The Mien, along with other hilltribes living in the Golden Triangle, once supplied most of the world’s illicit raw opium. For the mountain people, opium poppy was once their staple cash crop. Since this picture was taken in the early 1980s, poppy cultivation has steadily declined.
Mien or Yao in northern Thailand were expert poppy farmers, until the practise was effectivery banned in the late 1990s. This women wears the traditional indigo dyed, hand woven turban of her tribe. The women decorate their pants, turbans and baby carriers with exquisite and colourful cross-stitch embroidery. It is usual for young babies and children to accompany their mothers to their fields. Taken in the early 1980s with a Nikon FM2, Nikkor 135mm lense and kodachrome slide film.
Addicted to opium in the womb, Ja Te had a tough start. His mother blew smoke in his face when he cried. In his twenties, he works for people in his Thai border village, for a smidgen of opium and a few rice meals. Lying in his favourite position, curled by his pork-fat lamp, he takes a break between scores of pipes. Kodachrome slide film, Nikon FM2, taken in 1979.

A Blue Hmong opium addict babysits her grandchildren while their parents work their fields. The sad reality of life in the northern Thai mountains when hilltribes like the Hmong cultivated opium poppy was that many elders, both men and women, became addicts. Often they started by using the drug to relieve pain, as it was effective and the only option in remote villages. As long as the families grew poppy the elderly addicts were a supportable burden. Unlike in the west, the addicts were not ostracised, and often maintained positions of respect within their communities.
I couldnt resist capturing these lovely poppy seedheads but then felt they deserved something more… So for the very first time ever (!) a teensy bit of texture..
