This shot was taken in Copacabana in 2006, a little town in the north of Bolivia, situated on the bank of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800 mts. / There was a big celebration in town that day and so much to see and discover. But I was so tired that I decided to sit down and rest for a while when those two men sat just in front of me. I took so many pictures of them but this one is my favorite. Click /

La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

Oil painting on canvas (original sold) I painted this scene of an Irish village several years ago, adapted from an old photograph dating from probably the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The man with the cart is probably a trader, the young woman looks on while the elderly folk take in the sun and watch the activity in the village. Interesting to see the various buildings, from poor thatched cottages to well built stone (shops?) and wealthy mansions. In Ireland today, many of these building would still exist. I live in an old cottage which once had a thatched roof and probably looked pretty much like the one in the painting. The slate roofs can still be seen in some places and the shops and stores still look very much the same… double glazed windows replace the old wooden frames and inside its very modern but walk through any old Irish village or town and you will see that the old buildings are still there. Driving through an old village is a nightmare… the road is narrow and will swerve because, as in this painting, a building could jut out into the road. Slow down world!! Bring back the donkey and cart, I say!!! :-)

Taken at Cockington Village just outside Torquay in Devon UK. The ancient village is a real step back in time for the visitor and most of the centuries old houses have thatched roofs like this one, the Higher Lodge. Ponies and traps are available all through the Summer months for a scenic trip round the village and the friendly drivers are full of information about the historic village. According to tradition, Sestri Levante was founded by the Ligurian tribe of the “Tigullii” and it was already known in the Roman Age under the name “Segesta Tigulliorum”. The ancient core of the town developed in the Middle Ages in a fortified position on the “island”. After the 15th century, the town expanded onto the alluvial plain south of the Gromolo river. Sestri Levante then became part of the Fieschi family’s domain, until it passed under the flags of the Republic of Genoa, which built the castle on the “island” and kept control of the town until the Napoleonic conquest.

Best on Full Size This little copper kettle was on an ancient wood stove, located in one of the log cabins at Old Bedford Village in Bedford, PA. One of the interesting things about this wonderful village is the buildings and accessories are authentic to their time periods. It is my understanding that the homes and barns and churches are not reproductions, but are actual, once-working structures that have been moved to Old Bedford Village . Image taken wih the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter speed 1/10, aperture f/13.0, exp. -.33, iso 1000. No flash, natural light. Post processing included the addition of three textures in Photoshop, a light Orton technique and dodging and burning. Best Viewed Larger This lovely old cabin is one of the first structures visitors see when they arrive at Old Bedford Village, a Living History Museum, in Bedford, PA. Many of the structures here are original to the general area. When their useful lives were over they were torn down and reconstructed on the site. Others are reproductions, meticulously crafted to represent their original counterparts. Image taken on October 17, 2009 with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, uv and cp filters attached. Shutter 1/320, aperture f/9.0, exp -.33, iso 250. Post processing included some work in levels and a hint of warm filter in Photoshop.

I took this from a bus, while traveling between Madrid and Valencia, in Spain. I have no idea what this little village is called, but it was like something out of a movie. We past several of these on the 6 hour bus trip across the country. Spain has some spectacular scenery and quaint villages that almost seem trapped in time. Layered the original image twice, adjusted contrast and tone slightly. Added a texture layer from www.deviantart.com free use stock. Layered the texture several times over, adjusting the constrast, saturation and lightness on each to vary the colour and tone. I took this image inside one of the many reconstructed buildings on site as the skies were going from rainy to sunny. Camera used was the tripod-mounted Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, uv filter attached. Shutter was 1/2, aperture f/32, iso 640. Post processing included HDR from a single image, duplicated twice to evals of +/-2 in Photoshop. Light Orton and textures applied as well.
