my sister at her wedding (23.6.07)… / To achieve the soft focus on this photo I add a guassian blur to one of the channels (can’t remember which one), changed to sepia and then added a ‘soft light’ blending layer also a little dodging and burning… v. simple!

This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. Currently, there are more than 24 million people in the world with dementia—this is estimated to rise to 81 million by the year 2040.6 / Statistics taken from both the Canadian and American Alzeihmer’s Society.

It might make for a good anti-smoking skin-aging ad, if she didn’t look so great. She was such a lovely lady, living in a village outside Mandalay where everyone was involved in different parts of the process of producing wonderful metal bowls. Some people panned for the base metal, some people took it and melted it, others made the crude bowls, still others used hammers and tools to make them look pretty, then they were sold by the folks who lived up by the main road. I’m not sure what this lady’s role was in all the above. I like to imagine that it was her job to oversee everything while smoking cheroots, nodding sagely, keeping a beady eye on everyone.

Having decided what shape his future will take, the Fool strides forward. But he is impatient to make his future a full-grown reality. This is when he comes upon the Empress. Hair gold as wheat, a crown of stars, a white gown dotted with pomegranates. She rests back on her throne surrounded by an abundance of grain and a lush garden. It is possible that she is pregnant. Kneeling, the Fool relates to her his story. And she, in turn, smiles a motherly smile and gently gives him this advice: “Like newly planted grain or a child in the womb, a new life, a new love, a new creation is fragile. It requires fertile soil, patience and nurturing, it needs love and attention. Only this will bring it to fruition.” Understanding at last that his future will take time to build and create, the Fool thanks the Empress and continues on his way. Pregnant. Well, not in the Rider-Waite deck she isn’t. But she is in early decks, and it is an apt symbol for this card. The Empress is a creator, be it creation of life, of romance, of art or business. While the Magician is the primal spark, the idea made real, and the High Priestess is the one who gives the idea a form, the Empress is the womb where it gestates and grows till it is ready to be born. This is why her symbol is Venus, goddess of beautiful things as well as love. Even so, the Empress is more Demeter, goddess of abundance, then sensual Venus. She is the giver of Earthly gifts, yet at the same time, she can, in anger withhold, as Demeter did when her daughter, Persephone, was kidnapped. Beinn na Cailleach or Hill of the Old Woman, is one of the Red Cuillin hills that sits behind Broadford on the Isle of Skye. The view here is looking over the lochan of Cill Chroisd. ’’A Graham peak located towards the centre of the Isle of Skye, in Highland Council Area, Beinn na Caillich rises to 732m (2401 feet) 2½ miles (4 km) west of Broadford. The mountain is linked to Beinn Dearg Mhor (709m / 2325 feet) by a high pass. Another Beinn na Caillich, of almost the same height, is located 11 miles (17 km) to the east.’‘ ’’Beinn na Caillich (also spelt Beinn na Cailleach, and meaning the hill of the Old Woman) is 732 metres high and is a magnificent viewpoint, particularly for Broadford Bay which is almost between your feet. In 1772 noted geographer and traveller Thomas Pennant climbed the peak, the first recorded ascent of a Skye mountain. He was more impressed by the view in the opposite direction, writing ‘the prospect to the west was that of desolation itself; a savage series of rude mountains, discoloured, black and red, as if by the rage of fire. The serrated tops of Blaven affect with astonishment: and beyond them, the clustered height of Quillin.’. The mammoth cairn can be seen for miles around and is said to be the burial place of a Norwegian Princess from the time of the Viking occupation of Skye. According to legend, she wanted to feel the winds from her homeland around her grave.’‘ The primary meaning of ben is horn, hence peak. In Scotland the term in the oblique form, beinn, is extended to apply to any hill, without regard to shape, though traces of the old usage are common. The diminutive binnean always denotes a peaked hill, sometimes by no means diminutive in size. A mountain is a mountain in England, but when the climber is in Scotland it may be a beinn, a creag, or a meall, a spidean or sgor, a carn or monadh, a stuc or a torr.

I focused here on the old and happy times while they where living in Skibbereen, in Dear Ireland. / It’s like an instant shot of the father’s memory, when he was happy, he remembers the good days when his wife was alive. / We all have photographies of people we love.
