My grandparents’ old farm is full of old buildings like this dark red barn. The stacks of wood you see are cut from nearby forest, awaiting planing into lumber to be used in new homes. I played around with this until it had something of an antique look to it. Thoughts on this process are welcome!

Remember that house .. / when you were a child / the house that everyone thought was haunted / you know the one….we all had one… you faced your fear and entered the house on the hill *** / / A wonderful story written for my picture by:iconmahjongmonkey: I want to live in that house on a hill. / The joy I could share / With the one I love near / As we live in that house on a hill. The sun will shine through on each window sill. / We’ll dance in the kitchen / Of that house on a hill. The nights will be calm / But we don’t have to be still. / There is much to enjoy / In that house on a hill. I’ll dream happily of the present we share. / I won’t have a care as long as he’s there, / And we’re in that house on a hill. I’ll smile and sing, / All of our hopes will take wing / As we grow in that house on a hill. But I just sit and stare / At the shadows in there. / Empty window panes / And the garden that snares / My sad little house on a hill. by Kim CalvertThe house sits like her heart… Empty, once full of love and life, now the halls echo with the laughter..the joy of their love, Memories of happiness are all she has. He left for work that day with a kiss to her lips, a “I love you” on his way out the door, she waved to him out the window and blew him a kiss..if she only knew that would be the last time she tasted his kiss, felt his touch,she would never have let him go..The only relief out of all this pain and heartache is he didn’t suffer, when the truck hit his car head on, he died instantly. Now she waits, unable to leave their home, not wanting to go on, knowing that he waits for her..she prays for “HER” life after death, to be in his arms again, to feel his kiss, his touch, to make this house their home for eternity, the way it should have been..but again she wakes to the emptiness of the halls, the emptiness of their bed and of her heart..she goes to the window and like a movie played over and over agiain she sees him getting into his car..she pounds on the window..yells for him to STOP!!!..to COME BACK!!!...and like every day he pulls away and disappears into thin air…leaving her again.to her pain, and their empty house. Pastel on Canson Paper – 50cm x 25cm Another one that I’ve dragged from the archives! I let the warmth of the coloured paper do most of the work for me! I hoped to provoke a feeling of nostalgia in this commission, where a view of the property was required, together with the farmer (not a “young” man himself) and his very old, and much loved, dog!
