Whilst competing in a Rogaine in SW Western Australia my mate and I stumbled upon a deserted farmhouse and out buildings. Because we were camping overnight in roughly the same area I managed to get back the next morning to get a few shots. I only hope I can find my way back there as there are lots of shots to be made.

By far the most famous fictional ghost ship is The Flying Dutchman. The ship has become synonymous with the phenomenon so that “Flying Dutchman” is often used as a generic term for any apparition-type ghost ship. The term may also refer to a real ship that was reported to be seen – often as an apparition – after sinking, or to a ship found floating with no crewmembers on board. According to folklore, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that can never go home, but must sail “the seven seas” forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. If she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land, to people long since dead. / Versions of the story are numerous. According to some, the story is originally Dutch, while others claim it is based on the English play The Flying Dutchman (1826) by Edward Fitzball and the novel The Phantom Ship (1837) by Frederick Marryat, later adapted into the Dutch story Het Vliegend Schip (The Flying Ship) by the Dutch clergyman A.H.C. Römer. Other versions include the opera by Richard Wagner (1841) and The Flying Dutchman on Tappan Sea by Washington Irving (1855).

A great turnout of Redbubblers met at Gladesville Mental Hospital this morning for some photo opportunities – this is a little nook in one of the delapidated buildings. Thanks to Philip and Kaz for organising the day. Gladesville Mental Hospital (formerly Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum) operated from c.1838- Surviving records cover c.1822-1985 In 1838 the lunatic asylum was moved from Liverpool to Tarban Creek, Gladesville and the first patients were transferred from Liverpool Asylum and the Female Factory, Parramatta. It accepted patients from Victoria up until 1848 when the Yarra Bend asylum was opened. By the mid 1960s the institution was known simply as Gladesville Hospital. In 1993 premises at Gladesville Hospital and Macquarie Hospital were revoked as hospitals, and were amalgamated to form the Gladesville Macquarie Hospital. HDR image processed in Photomatix from a single jpeg (with 3 exposures 1/3) then finished in CS3. Artwork from Ireland. I came across this little old cottage in The Aran Islands off the coast of County Clare/ County Galway on the west coast of Ireland. I’m sure there was a pot of tea brewing on the stove there many many years ago. These tiny fields are dating from The Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s Ireland. That’s the sea in the background. Old hospital building on an active campus, one of the most beautifully haunting scenes I have been lucky to stumble upon Pentax K100D Super 18-55 Kit lens… F/8 and I believe 15 seconds. Nope don’t need expensive equiptment to capture a good shot. This State Hospital was established in its present location in 1901 as a farm colony for “chronic insane patients”. By 1945 the number of patients had risen to 1,730, with a total staff of 250 with 241 vacancies. By this time the institution had grown to 1,200 acres with buildings scattered widely over an area covering three towns. After 72 years of operation the Hospital was closed in 1973 as the first of a series of institutions to close in its state. The campus is now occupied by a University , a Job Corps Program, and various state agencies. Most structures have been renovated and altered for re-use, some have been demolished. A graveyard remains on a nearby hilltop with 1,041 numbered, nameless graves of persons who died in this institution. A handwritten list of their names survives in various archives.

I have just returned from a wonderful holiday. This photo was taken at Tintagel and is on the north coast of Cornwall, set high on cliffs overlooking the sea. Tintagel is the legendary site of King Arthur’s conception and birth. Historically it would appear that Tintagel was an important trading post from late Roman times until it was abandoned at the end of the 7th century. Around 1230, a castle was built at Tintagel by Richard, Earl of Cornwall and son of King Henry III. / The ruins of Tintagel are such a beautiful sight ….but ooooooh so high…I was so brave to climb that cliff….I’m not good with heights but I saw this shot on a postcard and I just HAD to get it for myself…lol.
