Bullshit! And this is why. I realised whilst reading other peoples comments that some people have been dissuaded from taking photos around interesting industrial locations. After all you must be a terrorist if you are taking a photo of a refinery, right! Thought I’d share some of my experiences on the subject as I am very often in these kinds of situations. My day job is photographing cars for magazines. I often do this in industrial locations and sometimes near sensitive installations such as refineries, ports, airports, you name it. I’ve been accosted by security guards, customs agents, police, ignorant old farts, you name it. I’m sure someone has already reported me to ASIO. I’m not a lawyer so don’t try to use me as an excuse if you end up in jail, do your own legal research, consult a lawyer if you think you need to, but this is the information I have obtained from both State and Federal Police when I’ve called to question the legality of such photography. Basically, there are no laws which prevent you photographing any property from a public place! Private properties such as shopping centres, subways, airports etc are a completely different story whilst within the property. The property owner sets the rules and you must abide or leave. But if you are outside the private property and on public land then shoot away. There can be local council By-Laws preventing photography, such as on some beaches, so it is worth asking the question if you think it might be relevant. However, any Police officer can do just about anything they like to you should they have good reason to suspect you of Terrorist activity. They can confiscate your camera, detain and question you. My solution to this is to have some forms of identification or samples of my work, in a small compact Folio, which can be shown to quickly convince them of my real intentions and identity. I have a Canon CPS card with my photo on it and business cards, or you could join one of the professional photographic associations (if you are eligible) some of which now offer membership cards for this very reason. There’s heaps of good information here on the legality of photography. It’s worth reading. / http://www.4020.net/words/photorights.php Having said that, you can’t then just do anything you like with the images because of trade mark and copyright issues with buildings and company logos, but that’s a whole different issue anyway. Just being allowed to take the photo doesn’t mean you can do whatever you like with it. My suggestion is that if you are going to be shooting in really questionable places AND you think you might have trouble with security, then try to contact the security people first and tell them who you are and what you are doing. DO NOT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION, you don’t need it! Just offer them the courtesy of letting them know who you are and what you are doing so that they don’t have to worry about you. Shell, for example, is a bit touchy about this kind of thing. I always call them and tell them of my intentions to shoot around their refineries. They appreciate it and we both play nicely. Same thing at airports such as Moorabin or Essendon. It works. Know your rights and don’t let the ignorant push you around. Of course never let things get out of hand. I can honestly say that I would be the first to call the police should a security guard get heavy handed with me. Not that it’s ever happened, and hopefully it never will. JJ

I’m going to post a little series giving you guys a look behind the curtain, specifically how we make some of our products for you guys. Today – lets take a look at mounted prints. We start with a big box of Kodak Endura paper like this: Then we fire a big ‘laser’ at it: After that it gets processed, It’s pretty dark inside the machine… You’re just going to have to use your imagination abit here – lots of rollers and developer: We check and then laminate the prints: We mount it onto the gator: We trim and the edge the print: Finally, we test every product before it goes out: Ok, so it’s all true, except for the last part, though that really is me standing on that print … gator board … strong stuff ! So you might have created a new calendar, and even ordered one, but how can you easily show someone else what your calendar look likes. You may have seen James post where he is peddling his wares, but you might have also wondered how he did it. For those with a bit of a technical bent, and know how to wield the text formatting used here, here are some pointers that will help get you going to create something like this, which is my ‘Snow’ calendar : We are also looking at being able to provide custom pdf previews of your individual calendars that look like this one for my Snow Gum calendar which you could them email around, or just linked directly to. - To start, this assumes you have a calendar already created, and in mybubble. / / - Go to your calendar via mybubble > calendars > edit > buy/preview. - You will see a preview of the cover page there. You need to view that image on it’s own, and copy it’s url. Different browsers have different ways of doing it, firefox it is right click view image or via ‘copy image location’, safari it is right click view in new window/tab, an IE is via properties I think. Anyway, assuming you can find that, then you can add that cover image to a journal entry, or in the description of other works. - An example of the url is : / http://images-0.redbubble.com/img/calendars/page:0/product:calendar/view:preview/389217-1-snow.jpg - This is can then be shown as an image by putting the url between exclaimation marks like this : !http://images-0.redbubble.com/img/calendars/page:0/product:calendar/view:preview/389217-1-snow.jpg! - From here you can reference all of your other pages by just changing the bit of the URL that says ‘page:0’, this can be ‘page:1’, ‘page:2’ etc up to ‘page:12’. A total of 13 different pages including 0 for the cover page. - If you want to arrange these side by side you can use the vertical bars to create a table on your page. Code like : | !http://YOUR_IMAGE_URL! | !http://YOUR_IMAGE_URL! | / | !http://YOUR_IMAGE_URL! | !http://YOUR_IMAGE_URL! | - For a journal entry I wouldn’t recommend more than two wide. In a nutshell, that’s about it! One thing to note is that if you edit your calendar, then you will need to update the image url, as one part of it (the last number) will change after each edit.

I recently added a journal entry on how to show off your calendars by embedding the individual preview images for the cover & each month here . Last Friday we released some new functionality to allow you to preview your calendar via a downloadable pdf file. This gives another way of being able to publically show your calendar, and potentially via different means. If like before, you go into mybubble -> calendars -> edit calendar -> buy/preview then you should now see a link below your preview image saying “You can download a reduced-quality PDF preview here”. Here is a link to my snow calendar as a PDF, the same one as in the previous journal article. This is a file of only a few MB that can be downloaded and saved or opened up in acrobat reader. Note that this is low quality preview only, it does not have the full detail of the final printed version. The idea here is it gives you a little more detail than the standard web preview, and allows for your whole calendar to be conveniently ‘shared’ in one file. So, you can copy that link (right click in your browser and select the appropriate option) and then do things like embed it in your journal entries, add it to emails, or put it on other websites as you would like. You could also attach the saved pdf to an email, and send it directly to an friends or family that may be interested in seeing/buying your calendar.

Adding lists of categories to your profile or descriptions:- The first, and most important thing you need to do is tag your work, making sure the tags are relevant. People search for subjects, colours, locations…all sorts of things! When you are tagging for your categories, make sure you use categories that are going to make sense to you. My seascape tag is “beach” and I’ll add it to all my seascapes. When doing a category link, it’s just a matter of bringing them all together using this url http://www.redbubble.com/people/melbrackstone/art/everything/tags/beach For your own categories, of course, you change melbrackstone to your own nick/or name….and if it’s t-shirts or writing you might need to change those words too…just check out the results by pasting it into your browser. Then we come back to making a link. Using the quotes around your title – “Seascapes” then a colon : and then the url, the link will look like this Seascapes There are no spaces between the quotes, colon or url….. get to it everyone, tag and categorise your work!! Bullet list them with the hash key, and a space….

I’m outa here for the week – no TV, no internet, just beach and rest and no doubt some photographs, and a good book! Before I go I need to thank the anonymous WONDERFUL person who purchased a matted print of Bridal Veil Falls No 1 a few days ago … what a blast !!! THANK YOU !!! I also need to thank the hosts of Groups who have recently Featured my shots, and all who have voted for my images thereby gaining some top tens and even a win or two! There is never a dull moment on RB (well … hardly ever!!! Noticed a few quiet days recently where people must have had better offers … strange how it happens that everything goes quiet all at once for a while!). Take care, and save some fun for when I get back!!

We love canvas. And Paul really loves canvas – his walls are covered with the stuff. It’s a classic format for displaying all sorts of artwork. Canvas makes us so happy that we do crazy things, like reducing the price by 20% for 72 hours so you can fill your walls with it too. Here’s Paul with “Silence (Love Awaits)” by Lindsay Blamey: And as you probably won’t have believed us, we’re going to repeat it, all stretched canvas, reduced by 20%, for the next 72 hours. Or until Sunday night for those of you who don’t like numbers. / / Maybe you’ll use this chance to let everyone know about your work on RedBubble or just maybe there’s a bit of wall space at home that’s feeling a bit empty. / / And just like on Columbo, there’s one more thing: We pushed the instant gratification button and guarantee that your canvas will ship in two business days or it’s on us. And for those that love to share, upload a photo of your canvas(es) to the Buyers’ Booth in the next two weeks. We’ll reward three people with a AU$20 RedBubble gift certificate. Details: No code needed, simply checkout with a canvas (or five) in your cart. Discount calculated on base prices through Sunday. Here are a couple of close up shots of the prints themselves so you can bask in the amazing quality. Go ahead, bask, no one’s looking. Images by Narelle, Kookylane and Monkeyboy. And here are a few shots from the Buyers’ Booth. The madness ends Sunday March 29, 2009 at 11:59 US Pacific Time.

After a fairly hectic week of painting and hanging art…the night finally arrived! The Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council Nick Berman gave a great speech while Alan Cadman (Liberal Member of Mitchell for 33 years) and his wife enjoyed the art and meeting local artists. Many Redbubblers enjoyed catching up (it’s been a while)...check out the link and see if you can spot any familiar faces! There was even a surprise visit from a Melbournite (can you pick who?)...now that was a lovely surprise!! Thanks again to all the sponsors (Redbubble, on the go, Dural Beauty Care, ID Photography, Jane Hart and Bill and Sarah Photography), artists, supporters and well wishers who helped make the night such a success…and especially my mum and Daniel who without their help would have been a little lost – LOL.

It’s September! Which is pretty exciting by itself, and we’ve taken that excitement one step further by celebrating the recent launch of our marvellous 2010 RedBubble Calendars with a quite brilliant offer. We’ve knocked 15% off all calendars, that’s 365 days for the price of 310. Where else can you find such value? Nowhere that’s where. And when you buy 10 or more, we’ll give you free shipping. But you only have one week to enjoy this offer, (ends 10am AEST, convert to your time.) so if you haven’t already chosen 12 images and selected what will be brightening your kitchen next April, then I’d suggest you get your skates on and make yourself a fancy new calendar. Of course if you’re really stretched for time, you can just buy somebody else’s. And over here, someone called ‘Jo’, has written all about how useful they are as gifts or even at making you some money, with which to buy more calendars I expect. And when they look this lovely, it’s just not surprising. / / / 2009 is so last year. It’s against RB etiquette rules to publicly name people who “may” be breaking copyright rules, so the previous journal has been depublished. RB will be doing what they can to check the claims of myself and others who have reported that person, and will be taking appropriate action…. I apologise for breaking the rules…. I’ve just been told the user has been deleted….yay!

HI! / Many of you will be aware there has been somewhat of an upheaval across this website these past weeks regarding in general – the rules and policies re expected behaviour and how they have been enforced. In response to this, RB admin and management are working really hard to put together as clear a statement re what is, and what is not acceptable behaviour, and what the resultant penalty for ‘overstepping’ any particular mark should be. Excellent!!! They now have an (apparently draft) document on this that is beginning it’s process of ‘solicited feedback’, firstly by having been assessed by RB staff, currently it is available to group hosts to view and comment on, and sometime (soon, I expect) it should be made available to the general RB membership to add their feedback. This is all a very fine, extremely difficult and confusing (due to the already extremely varied viewpoints expressed) and SLOW process. I have read the proposed new rules and guidelines pdf document I believe now 7 times, making notes as I go. On the whole, there are a few rather minor issues that I believe MAY be queried re how they are to be defined and enforced, but overall, everything is extremely clear and well set out. The earlier ‘rules and policies’ (when I finally found them) I ALSO thought were quite clear, well set out and defined. The one major difference between these 2 documents is that the new one allows for a ‘review process’ for those who wish to activate it, whereas there was no recourse to review before. / This is, in principle, a truly EXCELLENT addition to the rules and guidelines. So far – all fine and good and excellent??? Yes??? With, in my honest and truly thought through opinion, ONE EXTREMELY SERIOUS OMISSION WHICH IS BEING TOTALLY IGNORED AS EVERYONE (well – only hosts so far) RUSH TO AIR THEIR OPINIONS AND ARGUE OVER THE FINE PRINT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES – AS WELL AS ISSUES NOT IN THE NEW GUIDELINES AT ALL (LOL)....... The primary reason there was a great upheaval and huge anger and disillusionment throughout the RB community was NOT the ‘enforcement of any rule or guideline per se’. The primary reason for the huge upheavals and the extremely upsetting and destructive arguing in the forums over the past weeks was the PERCEPTION OF UNFAIR AND INCONSISTENT APPLICATION OF RULES AND GUIDELINES. RB management HAS ADMITTED that, since it’s not well advertised assumption of altered rules in February, it’s application of those rules HAS NOT BEEN CONSISTENT OR FAIR. Nowhere in this new document, or in any of the information provided to, or solicited (from so far only staff and hosts) does Red Bubble management provide ANY information at all on how they intend to implement not just this new rules and policy document (in whatever slightly edited form it may finally see the light of day), but also on how they intend to firstly make sure that these new guidelines and rules are implemented CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY, and, how they are going to be made to BE SEEN TO BE IMPLEMENTED CONSISTENTLY AND FAIRLY. If the previous rules were unable to be administered consistently and fairly – what reason does anyone at this point in time have to consider that the implementation of ANY format of ANY rules and guidelines will in future be able to be more fair and consistent than to this point in time? In my honest opinion – an EXTREMELY BIG HOLE in RB management’s response to the recent upheavals. I would hope this could be addressed well BEFORE any potential new rules and guidelines need be submitted to ANY feedback at all….. I welcome any and all opinions here on this – my statement of my opinion. However, I will not reply to any comments left here until, at the earliest – sometime tomorrow. / I am, at the moment, extremely tired. I have spent by far the greater proportion of the past weeks on RB policy and procedure issues, with virtually NO time to myself and / or my artwork. For the sake of my sanity, I am now, on posting this journal, going to turn my internet off, and concentrate for a bit on what I should be spending most of my time doing – my photography (as well as resting lol). / I resolve truly to not delete any comments here that may disagree with what I have written – I am interested in fair and open expression for all. / Cheers - / Kallena xx

Update 06 December 2009 Important NOTICE / / I want the option of turning off the “share” features on RedBubble. / To say this new feature is annoying is an understatement, especially since it was recently added without my knowledge or agreement. / On another subject: I discovered today a “social bookmarking site for pictures” ..... An extension allows someone to post an image to their account by right clicking on it.” / / At the bottom of the page there is a tab which asks / “Do you have any questions, bug reports or wishes?” / So, I clicked on that and reported my request for my images to be removed. Any tips on preventing this? I thought we had right/click protection on this site! / / Occasionally, depending upon how busy I am, I search for myself on the internet using various search engines available. It is always interesting to see what appears, what is unrelated to me, and what is attached to my name, and I have learned to be wary and careful of which websites to open, for there are some in other countries which actually are more like land mines raising all manner of red flags with my computer security software. / / Even so, I conducted a search today, a rather extensive search using my name and certain keywords. And I discovered this webpage with my image, along with many other photographers and artists. I can tell you I am very upset that so many people on the internet so blatantly ignore my copyright notice. This member does not have my permission to reproduce my image in their collection of “Favourites”. It is outrageous that we have no control over our imagery and how it is copy/pasted, downloaded/shared ….... / / You may wish to have a look at this webpage to see if your images are here as well. Some I recognise from artists here on RedBubble and some look very familiar. I am sending a request for the website to delete and immediately remove my copyrighted work/s from their site. It does not matter to me that this person links my image back to my RedBubble site, I do not like the share feature and seeing my imagery on another website without my prior written authorization. As a member of RedBubble we should have the option of whether or not we wish to share our content. / / You may open this link to view the images this person has “collected” and gleaned from the internet. / vi.sualize.us / / Here is the code for the my image, which is completely different from my own image, found in the properties of the “shared” image. / http://img1.visualizeus.com/thumbs/09/04/02/beach,beauty,ocean,sea,torrent-c2ee3bfa23547fb2d111613f9d9b23bf_h.jpg / / As clearly stated on the front page of my portfolio:* / I own full and exclusive copyrights on all my photographs, digital art and images on this website and they are protected under International Copyright laws. My images do not belong to the public domain and may not be posted in another web page on the internet or intranet, published in any book, magazine, newsletter or newspaper, duplicated, used in a derivative work of art, used as illustration for musical, dramatic, and/or literary works, or used for commercial use of any kind whatsoever without my express written permission, including but not limited to resale of my images without a license for use. I was browsing some challenges and was absolutely stunned at some of the images that won, now firstly, I didn’t enter these particular ones, and as it would most likely be I wouldn’t have a chance against some of the fabulous works I saw.. However, it is no doubt blatantly obvious that the winning image must have sought votes, why can’t people just allow their image to win on it’s own merit? Lets face it, if you feel you have to seek votes then it really mustn’t be that good even to you! So don’t do it,.. then we might see real quality come through winning challenges.. That is so unfair and unjust and for Pete’s sakes it is just a bloody fun challenge! / Challenge meaning just that! You challenge your work against other artists works and if the public vote on yours then so beit, but for crying out loud I think it is high time to grow some maturity and just leave the votes up to the individuals who want to vote and aren’t asked to vote.. Honestly, if someone messaged me and asked me to vote for their work on RB I’d report them! So nobody try it! Some of the crap I’ve seen didn’t even sustain real effort compared to the other entries.. so I may be doing a Pauline Hanson by speaking out perhaps for what many are already thinking but, well, at least you know where I stand on this issue. Anyway that’s my 2 cents worth.
