I like the soft pastel colors in this photo of the gold-winged skimmer dragonfly.

Common Green Darner (Anax junius) covered with water drops from an early morning rain sprinkle sits on a purple cone flower in my back yard waiting to dry out. In a half hour he was dry and gone. Photographed in Fort Frances, Ontario.

The male blue dasher dragonfly is among my favorites. It isn’t as skittish as some of the other dragonflies and sometimes cooperates beautifully when I chase it around in hopes of taking its photo. Dragonflies are also called mosquito hawks since they put a major dent in the mosquito population, thus contributing a wonderful service to man.

This bright blue Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly is a male; its mate is apple green in color. Both are beautiful and graceful and very helpful to humans as they eat enormous numbers of mosquitoes daily. In fact, they are commonly referred to as mosquito hawks because they’re predators on the prowl for the offensive pests!

Follow your dreams even if they seem faint or distant . . .
by Bonnie Taylor BarryUS$4.28–US$114.00
A dragonfly in clear focus in the foreground and another indistinct one in the background triggered this saying which I thought might make a nice greeting card about following a dream even if it seems elusive or unreal. I took this photo at Lake Martin in St. Martin Parish in southern Louisiana.

One thing I’ve learned about photographing dragonflies is that it’s better to find a seat and stay put until they come to you rather chasing after them, usually to no avail. Once they light nearby, they will usually return to the same spot over and over again and actually exhibit some curious behavior about the human presence. This female Eastern pondhawk dragonfly eluded me for two days as I chased her; today, I found a seat and waited in her territory. Sure enough, she came to me and we had a lovely visit. She let me get very close to her and seemed to be really fascinated with the camera’s flash.
-
This female Common Whitetail Dragonfly finally settled down for a spell and let me photograph her. The male which has much more white on its body is more skittish and harder to track down. Dragonflies are man’s friend in that they eat tons of annoying and harmful mosquitoes; hence their other name—mosquito hawks.

This Hagen’s Bluet is a damselfly common to northwestern Ontario and northern Minnesota. This little guy is about 3 cm long in real life. It was photographed in Koochiching County, Minnesota.
-
This damselfly is a bluet species and probably Hagens, but it is very difficult to tell without magnification of its tail end. Photographed July 16th, I did some post processing in PS using dry brush to give it a bit of a painterly quality.

This female Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly was enamored of the flash on my camera and stayed perfectly still as I clicked frame after frame. It was a sweet encounter with a lovely creature.
-
The male Eastern pondhawk dragonfly has a green head and blue body whereas the female has a green head and green body. They are friendly little creatures that are fascinating to watch and interact with. Also called mosquito hawks, they eat mosquitoes which is a beneficial service to man.

Stalked this fella and managed to get a decent shot with my Olympus MJU 410 (4mp). Hoping to get more this year. This is my favourite due to the cheeky expression on her face, aswell as thet fact I used the camera mentioned above.

This is the first dragonfly to emerge each season in the Rainy River District of Northwestern Ontario. Here I wanted a tight closeup with shallow DOF to focus attention on the head and thorax of this beautiful dragon, using the muted colors in the background to help with this emphasis.

A dragonfly is a marvel of creation and a tribute to the Creator who is worthy of our appreciation and awe. /

I watched the dragonflies in my neighbor’s pond at twilight and noticed how they seem to find a branch to call their own for the night; this male Eastern pondhawk was perched contentedly before the sun went down.

I photographed this dragonfly at Lake Martin, a wildlife refuge and bird sanctuary and rookery in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. It was just before nightfall.
