One of the earliest references to pocket watches comes from the Italian clockmaker Bartholomew Manfredi in 1462. They were superseded by the wrist watch in popularity during World War One. There is something enduringly romantic about them though, and they crop up quite often in science fiction. Doctor Who used one as did Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter (his had 12 hands) not to mention the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.
