  • / / A mixed media production on canvas textured paper, using ink, pastel, charcoal and acrylic paint. She’s my little senorita surfer girl…riding a wave – looks like she’s right out the back….and a little awkward…..she’s wearing a dress or a moo moo?....probably she’s a beginner …. maybe in a little Bay somewhere, perhaps it’s Byron Bay or Lennox Head…maybe it’s Burleigh Heads…not sure…but think this shot was taken in Australia somewhere…...ideas anyone? Maybe even WA? or is it Maui or Hawaii somewhere…kj may know…...who really knows :) i think she is a late starter like me…. but nevertheless determined to fly free and enjoy life…..to me it’s like she’s actually riding out to sea…on a big journey and a new adventure…. I’ll leave you to fill in the details… because of the colours, this has a bit of a christmas feel to it as well ….could make a good alternative christmas card :)

  • Aloha E pili mau na pomaika`i ia `oe / Kahakaloa Maui Hawai’i / Live Pono and Practice Aloha / © 2009 Fine Art Photography by Sharon Anne Mau Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / As Is with no post processing / It was a beautiful day here on the island. / 21 February 2009 Beautiful Kahakaloa is a small isolated village at the end of a valley. The village is home to about 100 people and their homes, two lovely churches, and several roadside stands including the Panini Pua Kea fruit stand and Ululani by the Bay, a pink cart with sodas and snacks run by Ululani Ho’opi’i, wife of recording artist Richard Ho’opi’i. Imagine one of the most biologically rich areas on the islands that is also home to hundreds of plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. / Here you will see and learn about the ancient Ahupua’a farming system still intact and operating today. “Gods like Ka-onohi-o-ka-la and Ku-waha-ilo bore to the Heavens the souls of Chiefs “where it was supposed the spirits of Kings and Chiefs sometimes dwelt and afterwards returned them to earth, where they accompanied the movements and watched over the destinies of their survivors” “In every case, the reception the soul met after separation from the body depended on his relations with his ‘Aumakua. A person who has committed a sin against his ‘Aumakua is exhorted to obtain pardon while he still lingers at Pu’u-ku-akahi (the first stopping place) before being conducted to Ku-akeahu (heaping up place) where he must make the final leap into the underworld called Ka-pa’a-heo (the final parting) At the first point, the Pu’u-ku-akahi, his ‘Aumakua may succeed in bringing him back to life.” “Milu is said to have been a Chief on Earth, who, on account of being disobedient to the gods, was swept down into the underworld at death and became it’s ruler. Both Kahakaloa on Maui and Waipio on Hawai’i claim him as Chief. Kupihea says that the Kahakaloa story is the older and the Waipio Milu story is patterned after it….. “ “Entrance into the pit of Milu (Lua-o-Milu) is at a cleft on some high bluff overlooking the sea or in the edge of a valley wall and a tree serves as the roadway by which the soul takes it’s departure. One such entrance, (leaping place) is Kahakaloa (sometimes spelled Kahakuloa) on Maui, Waipio Valley on Hawai’i, Moanalua on O’ahu. Other leaping places of the soul (Leina-ka-uhane) are named at different points about the islands coasts. There is a leaping place for every Ahupua’a, (district) on the Hawaiian Islands.” Ke au Okoa “Kamakau tells us Hawaiians are taught there is a place of darkness called Milu and a place of light called Wakea. The aumakua are the intermediaries between the living and the dead” Na aumakua mai ka po mai / Nana i na pua, ho’okomo iloko o keia po o ka malamalama / Aumakua of the night / Watch over your offspring, enfold them in the belt of light Hawaiian Mythology

  • Lower Nahiku / Makapipi Moku / East Maui Hawai’i “Home is the feeling, the essence breath of being / immersed and merged in this embrace with You. / Home is the centre from which we enter / Breathing now, this fragrance of our every moment… When you meet that One in this world / Your eyes will take on the Beloved’s gaze / In all eyes, windows to a deeper remembrance. / The meeting, a deeper moment, the embrace forever here / In all you touch, an invitation to a deeper Home. It is said that Heaven and Earth meet at dusk / A messenger of the future / Sunset dances new colours into being / Kissing today’s horizon / It blushes with the feeling of two worlds merging / This union can only be said by seeing….” Matisha 1997 from The Beloved’s Gaze © 2009 Fine Art Photography by Sharon Mau Shooting Date/Time 15 May 2009 18:14:28 / Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Tv 1/50 Av 5.6 ISO 100 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Nahiku translates in the Hawaiian language to Seven and refers to the Seven Sisters Constellation. Nahiku is located near the Ko’olau Forest Reserve on the remote east coast of Maui Hawai’i between Hana and Ke’anae. Here you may enjoy beautiful scenic views from Opuhano Point and Nahiku Landing, while resonating with the wonderful distinct sound of rolling lava pebbles from the surf in Honolulunui Bay.

  • Sunrise Rainfall Ke’anae Peninsula Maui Hawai’i Copyright © Sharon Mau 2007 – 2010 / Ourjrny / The Heart Within the Art / All Rights Reserved The beautiful remote village of Ke’anae is on the tip of the peninsula below. This is true Hawai’i where our Ohana and friends, Kanaka Maoli, the familes who live here, are descendents of many generations of farmers and practice ancient and cultural practices in sustainable land, fresh water, crops and taro farming and conservation. We have many Ohana and friends who live in this area. If you visit Ke’anae, please drive slowly as there are many children, do not enter private drives, and please be respectful for, the moment you drive off the road to Hana and turn down onto the Keana’e Peninsula, remember you are on private land. “Your touch was gentle. / I hardly noticed you enter within the circle of my life. / But yet, / you took hold of my heart, and led me along an ancient path. / Back to the places of the Ancestors and the Old Gods. You spun an unseen magic that found its way into my life. / As I lay with that circle of stones, ancient and worn, and looked up into the starry sky, / I could never have imagined that I would see the world through your eyes or touch your magical realm, a vision of the sparkling walls of your celestial home, held within your divine radiance, my Goddess of the Fates. And yet, / was I not always your child waiting to be born? / Your voice murmuring in the night. / The sigh of the wind on the moor, / and within the places of the dreaming, / carried by the sound of the Shaman’s drum. The many things you have shown me, in waking and in sleep, snatches of an ancient melody, / steps of a timeless dance. The weaver of the web, of which I am but one small strand…. / your essence flows within my veins, / your song hidden within my dreams, / waiting to be revealed.” ~ poetry by Vanora Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / This is a composite of two of my images, one taken of the sky at sunset on Po’olenalena Beach over Kaho’olawe Island and the second of rainfall on Ke’anae Peninsula at sunrise.

  • “I want to eat your soul … all of you … I will eat all of your souls! Don’t think you’re safe just because I’m beached, and it’s daytime, those things don’t matter, they are just myths … I’m coming to get you!” Using finepix options (which are not extensive) I’ve tampered with brightness, contrast, saturation to alleviate some shadows that were hiding detail, to fade out a distracting background, and really bring out that fantastic green slime growth!
