Sunrise on Topsail Island North Carolina
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located on North Carolina’s Outer Banks on the United States eastern seaboard of the Atlantic Ocean. The shoals and shifting sands of this region are often referred to as the “graveyard of the Atlantic” because of numerous ship wrecks. Print version available.
Taken inside Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It’s the tallest lighthouse in the US and the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. An American icon to be sure. The lighting was dim enough that most pictures inside didn’t turn out, but this was very near the top and thus was full of natural light.
Just after sunset at the OuterBanks, of North Carolina.
A serene ocean afternoon in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Please visit my blog for a description of how this composite image was created. Also taken in North Carolina: / A Sandy Stairway To Heaven / A Show For One / The End Or Beginning Of A Perfect Day /
I have resisted putting this one up for a long time. I don’t know if anyone else will like it, because it is very hard to describe what I see and appreciate in this photo. A different world, another life. It is a fence, as seen from the top of a very tall lighthouse in North Carolina. I love the simplicity of the lines, and the texture of the “carpet.”
Perhaps it is a cliched photograph. But I couldn’t resist. Also taken in North Carolina: / A Sandy Stairway To Heaven / Rhapsody In Blue / A Show For One /
Taken in North Carolina. Actually, the stairway goes to the ocean, right over that little ridge.
A glamorous sunset – or was it a sunrise? – in North Carolina’s Outer Banks…Point Harbor to be exact. / . / Also taken in North Carolina: / A Sandy Stairway To Heaven / Rhapsody In Blue /
This dried-up tree seemed to be stretching, yearning towards the water-laden heavens, desperate for a quenching rain shower. This photo was taken in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, at Jockeys Ridge Sand Dunes. It’s only a few minutes from where the first flight took off at Wright Memorial Park. Jockeys Ridge is a state park and also the practice location of a hang-gliding school. We saw several gliders on the ground that day, but nobody gliding. The sand was burning-hot and biting on our feet as we explored.

This was taken in North Carolina this summer. I like the moody, stormish feel of it. This shot can be seen in my calendar Everyday Mysteries. Take a look!
I’m putting this up for a calendar I’m making in honor of my summer trip to the Outer Banks. This is one of many iconic lighthouses we visited. I think the monotone suited it quite well. A lighthouse was built in this location in 1859 but was blown up by Confederate troops two years later (who were afraid it would be used against them by Union troops). The current lighthouse was not finished until 1872.
Just a glimpse of the casual beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Please let me know if you’d like a calendar made specifically for you! I’ll customize it with any photos from my gallery – for no extra charge.
This is the top of Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It’s a gorgeous, iconic lighthouse which had to be moved from the oceanside a few years ago. Erosion had weathered the seaside where it sat, and a single bad storm would have knocked it into the ocean. So they actually moved the entire thing to a spot about a half-mile away. I don’t actually have a great pic of the lighthouse. But we did climb it – this was the way to the lens, and this is the view from the very top. This photo is featured in my calendar Summer in the Outer Banks. Take a look! /
Another view of Hatteras Lighthouse – very near The Shadows Ascend and Lighting the Way. The angles, curves, lines and colors in this shot really fascinated me and I thought I might share it with you all. There’s a lot going on!
A sunny day

Professional Surfer Brendan Petticrew reaps the rewards along the Outer Banks of North Carolina as Hurricane Kyle passes by several hundred miles to the east. Canon 20d / Sigma 135-400
Captured in four-wheel drive country, in pursuit of the Wild Horses that roam freely in Northern Corova. The grasses gently blowing in the oceans’ breeze just begged to be photographed. Taken with the Nikon D300 and the Sigma 50-500mm (since I was hunting for horses).
