  • Taken in New Zealand from an observatory on the South Island.

  • The Observatory near Parkes, New South Wales, Australia.

  • This is a ruby red lacewing butterfly, and the way it had it’s proboscis inserted into the flower made me think of that moment when we first get a nice thick milkshake, and we are sucking hard on the straw, fighting against the frozen delight to extract it’s sweet creaminess!

  • Great for those who love the stars… Though there won’t be star gazing tonight. Also a nice gift for those fans of the game MYST

  • Upward Griffith Observatory

  • I love the feeling of this image of the observatory up on the hill that is for watching but in the foreground the tree seems to be watching over the observatory….

  • The JA Jones Hoober Observatory – located a mere quarter of a mile from the Hoober Stand monument near Wentowth, Rotherham in Yorkshire. Managed by the Mexborough and Swinton Astronimical Society (see more details here ). See also my Hoober Stand picture. • Unfortunately this gem is now longer w/us, it has been dismantled + a building is in it’s place. This was an observatory w/a giant telescope inside. It was open to the public on Friday nights. I used to love star gazing there!

  • Taken at Mt Stromlo observatory, Canberra, ACT, Australia. Taken with a Nikon D40x and 18-200mm VR lens.

  • This is the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, it is the largest steerable radio telescope in the world. It stands at 485 foot high, the dish’s diameter is 110 meters, it weighs a good 17 million pounds. / This is located in Green Bank, West Viriginia. The friend I stayed with has a friend who works at the observatory. He did get clearance to take us to the top!! Which they do not allow the public to be on it. Yep, I was at the top of this massive telescope!!! We rode two elevators to get there, my friend and I almost backed out going the rest of the way up as we looked thru a grated floor at the ground. Thanks to her friend ignoring our fears about being so high, basically coaxed us up further. I have no regrets about dealing with my respect of Serious heights and going up. Unfortunately I wasnt able to take my camera due to it being a digital camera that would interfere with the data the telescope retrieves. / The view I cant put into words of what it was like, words just wouldnt do it justice. It like to have driven me nuts not being able to capture this with photos. / The autumn colors were in full force, the sky a beautiful blue with white clouds hovering over us and the other telescopes they have on the land. I will upload day shots of this later. / My friend was a trooper getting up at 5am, for me to get this telescope with a full moon lingering over it. / If interested in learning more about this massive telescope, just check out Green Bank Telescope / There are a few other links about the other telescopes and this one. / And yep yep, the color Finally came back to my knuckles after we got back on solid ground! :) Shot this in Manual mode on bulb setting with ISO of 800, f-stop at 11 / Best if viewed larger

  • Travel in India

  • 2nd February 2009 / Camera: Nikon D60

  • Another part of the magnificent coastal scenery of Esperance in the far south east of Western Australia. Located on the edge of the mighty Southern Ocean in the Recherche Archipelago, Esperance is the principal holiday town for the Goldfields and also for those residents of Perth who don’t mind the 750 kms drive. These days, however, more and more people fly down (an hour and a half) and rent a car on arrival. / Many world travellers who include Esperance on their itinerary say without hesitation that the beaches here are by far the best they have seen anywhere and who am I to argue with that! / This photo was taken from the car park at Observatory Point, about 8 kms out of town, and we are looking west along the seemingly endless line of beaches that stretches into infinity. Sony alpha 350 dslr / 55-200 lens with polarising filter

  • 1000 hearts in a tree Acrylic on Canvas / Commissioned by Ourania

  • The Parkes radio telescope, made famous by the movie “The Dish”. Approaching this thing at 2am was rather erie, no one for miles, just you and this automated 64 metre wide radio telescope, scanning the skies for new stars and planets. This was an important part of the 1969, Apollo 11 moonwalk event. Now operated by CSIRO, scanning the skies 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Two-thirds of the 1,800 known pulsars, including the only binary pulsar system, were found using this telescope. Canon 50D, 12mm, light cropping. Parkes, NSW – 7:07am.

  • I found myself in Manchester today, camera in hand. After a good walk round, I ended up in the heart of Chinatown, enjoying the ambience of a vibrant chinese community and the sounds and fantabulous smells that accompany it. On seeing me sitting by the Chintown arch, this guy approached me and we started to talk “shop” about photography. Tony introduced himself and told me of the work he does at the Godlee Observatory, where he gets to hook his camera up to the telescope and photograph the Cosmos. Kindly, Tony also agreed to pose for this image. Thanks Tony, it was a pleasure to meet you, friend-you made my day.

  • The Parkes Observatory has to be my most favourite thing to photograph. Whenever we’re driving through outback New South Wales, I always have to stop and get some shots of it. I was pleased to get a different perspective this time. Have a great week everyone. From Wikipedia: The Parkes Radiothermal Telescope, completed in 1961, was the brainchild of E.G. (Taffy) Bowen, chief of the CSIRO’s Radiophysics Laboratory… The primary observing instrument is the 64-metre movable dish telescope, second largest in the Southern Hemisphere… During the Apollo missions to the moon, the Parkes Observatory was used to relay communication and telemetry signals to NASA, providing coverage for when the moon was on the Australian side of the Earth.
