This B&W picture of a Totem Pole is retouched in Adobe Photoshop CS3. The lips and eyes are filled with the original color. The rest of the shot has been converted to black and white. Totem poles are monumental sculptures carved from great trees, usually cedar, but mostly Western Redcedar, by a number of Indigenous cultures along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. The word “totem” is derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem, “his totem, his kinship group”. source: wikipedia

Drifting across the edge of paper boundaries, I call out for the name of nature’s proud parent and hear only bells. Is it a song or the wind? I burst into time and stop long enough to stutter a prayer that is incoherent to my ears. Yet a bird appears on the window sill and takes it like a crumb. Lucky that it flies away just before the cat grabs it by the throat. Floods of tired descriptions of doom cross my eyelids. I grab them all, twist them into a fan shape and whirl them across the vacant space that waits before me. They explode into a bundle of dream-like bubbles that float, pop and reflect the light from the eyes of the unknown. This painting is acrylic on paper 15”x20”
