  • The famous “Barro Negro” style of pottery very unique to the state of Oaxaca in Mexico is the only place where this pottery made because the specific black clay needed to make this is available only in this part of Mexico. Though we found this specific piece in our hotel at Merida, during our trip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Some of my other work: / / / © Kuntal Daftary

  • In Aztec mythology, Popocatépetl was a warrior who loved Iztaccíhuatl. Iztaccíhuatl’s father sent Popocatepetl to war in Oaxaca, promising him his daughter as his wife if he returned (which Iztaccíhuatl’s father presumed he would not). Iztaccíhuatl’s father told her that her lover had fallen in battle and she died of grief. When Popocatépetl returned, and discovered the death of his lover, he committed suicide by plunging a dagger through his heart. The gods covered them with snow and changed them into mountains. Iztaccíhuatl’s mountain was called “La Mujer Dormida, (the “Sleeping Woman”), because it bears a resemblance to a woman sleeping on her back (perhaps not the best angle in this picture). Popocatépetl became the volcano Popocatépetl, raining fire on Earth in blind rage at the loss of his beloved.

  • Dawn light reflections and feeding birds caught my eye on the Copalita River, where it meets the Pacific ocean at Playa Bocana, Huatulco, Mexico. Taken in winter during the ‘dry’ season, when there are no clouds and the sunlight is strong and pure in this unpolluted area, Featured The Colours of Water group, 1.Jan. 2009
