“Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” – Rachel Carson This is a photograph from a 1991 trip to Arizona, camping out above the donkey-run town of Oatman. Played with in Photoshop7. Been photographing old photos pre-digital…memories that make me smile ;) / /
First commissioned in 1926, Route 66 was the first highway to link Chicago with Los Angeles. By the 1930’s is was THE way west. John Steinbeck penned it “the mother road” in his work, Grapes of Wrath. This shot was taken somewhere between Kingman and Oatman, AZ. My art with 1000+ views
Captured in Oatman, Arizona. Located in the middle of the desert, and known for the wild Burro’s that raom the street, it is hard to imaging that some peculiar duck species actually migrates from the Grand Canyon to Oatman during the month of June. Scientists are still processing migration data and surely will capture, tag and band some of these for future research. This little fellow was spotted on an antique Fordson tractor right on Main Street. Note the similarities to this Duck spotted at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon: / Then later, spotted in Bristol TN, at a NASCAR race: /
AP – News Bristol, TN 8/23/08 / NASCAR fans in Bristol, TN were invaded by multiple tiny ducklings, which were seen drinking beer from unsuspecting race fans. Beer thievery is a chief reason for NASCAR fans to riot, fortunately track security staff managed to keep things calm. Several scientists present at the race, indicated that the US Government is funding a program to study the erratic migration behaviour of these little known creatures, since they have been seen at the Grand Canyon, Oatman, AZ and now Bristol, TN. Albino duckmeat has become a sought after delicacy in some parts of the US, however the yellow ducks remain too elusive thus far. Note the similarities to this Duck spotted at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon: / The Albino Duck species has been seen frequenting the Oatman, Arizona area: / Some have been seen to beach themselves on the East Coast: /

About 20 miles East of Laughlin lies the ghost town of Oatman, AZ. Once a thriving mining town during the gold rush, wild burros now wander the streets of this popular TV and movie western backdrop. Although they never lived here, the town was named in memory of the Oatman family. Six of the nine family members were massacred by the Apaches near Gila Bend, Arizona. The Oatman Hotel located in the center of town is the oldest two story building in Mojave County. Originally built in 1902, it was called the Durlin Hotel. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their wedding night at the hotel after being married in Kingman, Arizona on March 29, 1939. It is also the home of Oatie the Ghost, Oatie, whose real name was William Ray Flour, came to Oatman from Ireland to work as a gold miner and lived in the hotel. It is told that he sent for his family to join him but neither his wife nor two children survived the trip. He died in 1930 behind the hotel after drinking himself to death. He still walks the halls of the hotel performing harmless pranks on tourists and employees alike.
These are a couple of the locals that wander around Oatman Arizona dressed like cowboys of old. They put on regular gunfighter re-inactment shows for the tourists vising this facinating little Ghots Town.

The wild donkeys that come into town around midday at Oatman, Arizona… yep, they are wild and you can feed them too (carrots only but don’t feed the babies)

This is where Actors Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent their honeymoon in one room with a bed and dresser. Bathroom down the hall. Oatman is an old mining town (almost ghost town) where wild burros roam, and have the right away, on the city street.
