dancing water frozen in time
During this past week, unimaginable waves came crashing into the north shores of the Hawaiian islands. The surf was windy, and messy, and disorganized—not ridable for the great watermen of Hawaii. I happened to be in Sunset Beach, Oahu during the storm, and the sun only peeked through the clouds a couple of times, briefly. I was waiting. Here is my image.
This photograph is a sunrise shot taken at Halona Cove on O’ahu’s eastern shore. The sun appeared to be rising straight out of Haleakala or “House of the Sun” on Maui. Halona Cove is also known as “From Here to Eternity” Beach. This is the location where Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster embraced in the surf in a memorable, steamy scene from the movie of that title. Canon 30D, EF 18-55 lens, polarizer.
The landscape of this side of the island always had a mystical look to me. It was if the earth had just been created. This is near Waimanalo, Hawaii. /
Oahu, Hawaii. The Byodo-In is a Buddhist Temple that is a replica of the 900 year old Byodo-In in Uji, Japan. It had been raining all morning that day. Just when we were about to leave, the clouds above the temple broke giving way to some light, long enough for me to take this shot.
The northwest point on the island of Oahu, Hawai’i is Ka’ena Point. This was photographed after some torrential rains which resulted in little creeks forming and entering the ocean. The time of this photo is around sunset. Canon 1Ds Mark II / f/22 / 3.2 second exposure / 3 stop ND Gradient / Cropped slightly

Her name is Avis. She came to me in my portrait studio one day when I was set up on O’ahu. Her face was captivating! This image has been on several magazine covers already. My original shot was on Kodak TMX; hand printed; sepia-toned; and hand-colored.
It was a very stormy, windy, and generally un-photographable week in Hawaii last week. I was stuck on O’ahu because my ferry was canceled due to high seas. So I went “fishing” – so to speak. I took off in my car for 3 days straight, looking for a spot of sun, less wind, and good scenery. I caught the fish as I was driving into Kane’ohe. The sky cleared behind me, and I did a quick u-turn as the sun was quickly disappearing. I bailed out ov my van, and literally ran across the a tall-grass field, in desperation, to the edge of the water This image is a series of 16 shots on my little Canon Rebel XTi, using a very salt-coated lens. Thanks to the computer age, I saved the shot and made it all come together into what is a great “catch”.
