Well I have now added a fair number of ‘snow’ images, but it is now time to broaden the scope, at least a little. I am starting to add a number of images more generally from the Alpine regions of Australia (Victoria, NSW, and Tasmania). The first works part of this, perhaps subtle, shift are : Ghosts of Snowgums and Red, Red Robin Redbreast

I know Leek knows about this already, but his recent journal post about over-zealous citizens (and authorities) reminded me that some photographers on RB might not be aware of a useful resource related to legal issues surrounding street photography. NSW Photo rights is a continually evolving article by a qualified, but no longer practising, solicitor. It breaks down the subject of photographers’ rights in NSW (and the rest of Australia to a lesser extent). It includes a printable brochure that explains things in a nutshell to anyone who may question your rights. I have a handful printed and stored in my camera bag at all times, just in case.

Took a drive to Corowa, NSW, Australia last weekend to check out the water level of the Murray River. We spent two nights there. It’s not really a river at the moment – more like a shallow stream you could wade across. Official data from the New South Wales Government NSW Water Information website indicates that the water level at Corowa on September 30, 2007 was 1.2 metres. The water level recorded on August 30, 2008 was 0.35 metres. The height of the river fluctuates during the year according to rainfall and discharge from Hume Dam, and during December ‘07 at Corowa it was recorded at 2.3 metres. http://www.waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/ © Darren Stones 2008.

I was pleasantly surprised to arrive home from a few days away and find that my image Persistence has won the recent Australian Bush and Rainforest Photography Challenge!! This goes to show the benefits of (1) looking in strange and unlikely places for photo subjects (under an old piece of tin!!) (2) posting photos that you maybe don’t feel are absolute masterpieces (I was of two minds about this one!) and (3) entering challenges ‘just in case’ !!!! THANK you to the wonderful hosts of this group, to those who voted, and all who faithfully comment, favourite, and encourage. Hugs…

The two children were taken to hospital in critical condition but died shortly after. Circumstances surrounding the incident are not being treated as suspicious. I had to read the notification twice before I could believe it – last night a LARGE mounted print of Real Men Drive Utes sold – obviously to a Ford lover!! (Is it significant that I also sold a copy of the old Ford Anglia recently?!!) There have been a few featureds and ‘top 10’ images lately, but this sale has eclipsed those … THANK YOU to the anonymous buyer. It certainly cheered up my day.

Just had news that Girls Just Want to Have Fun is to be published in (Australian) ‘Camera’ magazine’s “Readers’ Digital Gallery” pages, Jan/Feb 09 issue. Let this be a lesson to all of us – this image was left to languish, after processing, in a folder for ages. I thought it didn’t quite ‘hang together’ as a piece of art. It has however taken off on every photo site that I’ve uploaded it to. You never know what will take off, until you try!!! Don’t write something off till you’ve at least given it a showing!!! Now back to that happy digi dance again!!!!

Where in the world is there a Gallery that would have more than 100,200 people passing by to view your work in about 16 months?!! That was my first thought when I noticed my view count this morning … It has been a fantastic journey … THANK YOU Redbubble, and THANK YOU faithful supporters!!! I have a wonderful dancing chicken gif but can’t work out how to insert it – you’ll have to imagine the ‘chicken dance’ sorry!!! / HA GOT HIM!!! :)

Along with many other Redbubblers I am donating profits from any sales of my work on RB to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal till April 1st to support those who have suffered loss in the Victorian fires here in Australia. If you have ever thought you’d like one of my images for your wall, as a card, or to use as a gift, now is the time – the proceeds could not go to a better cause. I will document any sales in a journal entry in April, and direct monies to The Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Whole families have lost their lives – whole towns have been burned out. It really puts things into perspective and gives us a huge reality check. Please pray for those dealing with the aftermath.

Having been away for a few days, there’s a bit to catch up on – not the least of which is a sale of a LARGE FRAMED PRINT of Go Placidly to an anonymous buyer! / THANK YOU – what an honour – my largest sale yet! Our local Agricultural Show at Castle Hill is reported to be the largest apart from Sydney’s Royal Easter Show, so it has been exciting this weekend to find that FOUR Redbubblers have received ‘gongs’ in the photography section for a number of images – GailD, Dennis Gay, SharonD and myself. I’ll let the others share their awards with you, but my notable mentions were Third Place in Manipulated Images for Vintage Effect and Highly Commended in mono for Grieg Piano Concerto. Thank you everyone for your continued encouragement and constructive help! Always appreciated and vital to that dreaded learning curve!! LESSON LEARNED – it pays to be proactive! Two photos of mine and one of George Petrovsky’s (GeorgeP) were used by The Hills Shire Times to support an article on Heritage Week this past week … they are candids from a local event commemorating a Rebellion which happened 31 years after Australia was discovered. This happened because I noticed no media was present, so I emailed info and shots that same afternoon to the paper on spec – and they were most grateful!!! If you see something newsworthy, give it a shot! The worst they can do is say “no thanks” !!! Mind you there was no $$$ involved, but it is great to have something in print regardless!

Hi Everyone :) I attended an exhibition last night in Lismore, northern NSW, Australia, put on by fellow bubbler and newfound friend Natsky her work was just so desirable and beautiful that we bought a framed piece Get Beached We drank hot chocolately drinks, and feasted on Natsky’s gorgeous photographs of nature and other wondrous ‘stuff’..... please check out her portfolio Over 70 people had been in attendance at the time of our departure, really fantastic for a first solo, and i there were still people pouring in the door as we left. This image Natsky took is a very familiar place for myself and family, we go there often and this particular variation of the beach scene is an unusual one, it makes me feel really contemplative and appreciative of my home, the beach sharpens my creativity somehow….I’m in love with the greenish tones, which remind me of the green seaglass I collect and the other glass surfaces in my home, which i prefer to have a greenish or bluish tinge…. i can’t wait to hang it :) Natsky and I met in the strangest of ways. I was in the Apple Mac store, right next door to where she and her husband work…..the apple mac lady and i were talking about red bubble and macs…....she told me about Natsky….i looked her up on red bubble when i got home….made contact via bubblemail….dropped into visit her as a surprise…at her shop….she wasn’t there, so her husband rang her and she came right on down, we hugged and i nearly cried…it was soooo good to meet her, and now we keep in touch via bubblemail…and I have a new friend ;) an extremely talented friend….she is a wonderful photographer across the board…and i also happen to know she draws very well too…. an artist through and through. Congratulations on your wonderful success last night Natsky, you are doing so well, and i can only be so happy for you, and proud to call you friend. Natsky is the first artist from whom we have ever purchased an original artwork, so i am very very excited!!! and I hope Natsky, you know what that means, that you are very very special :) Natsky’s exhibition continues to run throughout April and May at / the Chocolate Bar, Woodlark Street, Lismore…if you are in the neighbourhood, please don’t miss it ;) / Phone 02 6622 6723

I’ve just found that my image Gladesville Cameo No 1 has won Best of Category (Still Life) for March on the www.Shutterbugs.biz site – the prize is iConnect OneClick software! This free site is international, it has ‘photo of the day ‘awards for eight categories (seven days a week), and, for financial members, it extends then to monthly and annual prizes also. It is not a labour intensive ‘social’ site requiring heaps of time, but it pits you against excellent work from around the globe and helps challenge your comfort zone. Great for growth!!!

It was great to find that my own HDR version of The Basin received 2nd prize in Something Old category, and Blue Rain a 3rd in Nature at the Hawkesbury and District Agricultural Show this past weekend. Keep your eyes peeled – Redbubblers Gaild and Georgep also received some rewarding news from the same competition! Other encouragement has come in the form of another couple of Photo of the Day awards on Shutterbugs.biz, some top 10s,and featureds for some recent shots. Now all we have to do is convert our wins to sales … !! :) Thanks to all who comment, encourage, and critique. Couldn’t do it without you!!

It’s extremely rare for me to write about a feature at RB, but when it happens on the RB Home Page that’s pretty neat. :) / Evening Glow – Narrandera This photo was taken in 2007 whilst travelling north along the Newell Highway between Jerilderie and Narrandera in New South Wales, Australia. Bronwyn and I were desperately scouting the landscape late in the day looking for a definite feature to photograph during the golden hour. We were both pretty knackered by this stage of the day because we’d been working our butts off all day long. We work pretty good as a team when travelling – she’s patient and keeps an eye out for something of interest. Importantly, she helps with my gear and helps me get over some barbed wire fences. To date, there’s been no accidents, if you know what I mean. ;) So, this RB Home Page feature is dedicated to Bronwyn, who helped me over a barbed wire fence in my pursuit to make this photograph. Thanks to RB for choosing this image for the Home Page. :)

Art is not only for observing but also for healing. / Recently I have participated in some workshops run for survivors of breast cancer (concentrating on hands as design elements). They were very positive and there was a definite healing element. We enjoyed the opening of the exhibition last week / *Tickled Pink – Art Exhibition in association with the Breast Cancer Network Association & Artereal Gallery. The exhibition runs until 31 October from 11 – 5 Wed – Sun. / Proceeds from the sales of artworks will directly benefit Australians who are affected by breast cancer. Well I’ve finally done it … for so long I have been taking images of my beautiful Lake Macquarie – both the boats, sunsets and many moods of the lake. Now I have combined these images into a wonderful calendar. For those who don’t know, Lake Macquarie is situated in NSW Australia, about a 90 minute drive from Sydney along the F3 and sits adjacent to the City of Newcastle. The lake is actually situated in the city of its own name – the “City of Lake Macquarie” and is Australia’s best kept secret. / / Lake Macquarie is Australia’s largest coastal salt water lake, covering an area of 110 square kilometres (42.5 sq mi) in the Hunter Region of New South Wales and is said to be twice as large as Sydney Harbour and is the largest permanent salt water lake in the southern hemisphere. Living in and on Lake Macquarie has many advantages as the area offers not only the lake but is bounded on the eastern side by the ocean with a continuous line of beaches, the central coast towns and Sydney to the south, the Watagan Mountains to the west and Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley to the north and north west. So if you have already been here … drop by sometime … you will be pleasantly surprised. If you don’t … then I guess it will remain my best kept secret!
