The Cry of the Curlew from a fictioninal novel but based on fact, is very involved ..In the early days of white people occupying and taking over the indigenous people’s land in outback Australia the native aboriginals were considered vermin and there was a determined effort to make them extinct, one way to do this was to poison their waterholes.;hence the two figures in the waterhole.I did this in similar way rock art is drawn, the legend is whenever there is a death the bush curlew cries I haven’t heard one, but they only cry when distressed and apparently the sound is really long mournful and once heard not forgotten. / / Pastel painting from the book Cry of the Curlew by Peter Watt / http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/w/peter-watt/cry-of-curlew.htm http://www.peterwatt.com/australia.htm About the Author Peter Watt’s life experiences have included time as a soldier, articled clerk to a solicitor, prawn trawler deckhand, builder’s labourer, pipe layer, real estate salesman, private investigator, police sergeant and adviser to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. He has lived and worked with Aborigines, Islanders, Vietnamese and Papua New Guineans. / He speaks, reads and writes Vietnamese and Pidgin – and has a reasonable grasp of the English language. He currently lives in Maclean, on the Clarence River in Northern NSW. Good friends, fine food, fishing and the vast open spaces of outback Queensland are his main interests in life. He also enjoys SCUBA diving, military history, crosswords (but not the cryptic kind) and teaching. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Management, the Australian Institute of Training and Development and the Australian Society of Authors. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (University of Tasmania), Post Graduate Diploma of Training & Development (University of New England) and an Associate Diploma of Justice Administration (Sturt University). / Peter’s publisher. Pan-Mcmillon purchased the original painting from me a few years ago and it is hanging in their Sydney offices. [this is a copy because the author wanted it for himslelf and I thought I would get around to it at some time so I could give it to him and I forgot to photograph the original properly]

I am coming close to finishing up the first draft of a novel titled “Forts” that I’ve been writing for the better part of the year, and because of that I decided to sketch up a little something with the characters.
Another illustration featuring some characters from my novel. I kind of dig this one. The background is hotter than the surface of the sun! Okay, o maybe I am being a bit dramatic…but it does look pretty cool.
Keeper of time, his task to slice / Through time and space with no device / Move men and ships with cosmic splice / Using melange, the precious spice / / Melange born of the worms in sand / Their home, Arrakis desert land / Where Fremen tribes do make their stand / Protect this spice from evil band / / This fractal artwork was inspired by the 1965 classic science-fiction novel, ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert. This is the first instance that I can think of where the concept of ‘folding’ time and space for space travel is imagined. In the novel, creatures called ‘Navigators’ are able to use a spice called ‘Melange’ to enable space travel by folding space. / / This is my abstract portrayal of what a Navigator would be. The Navigator has infinite portals within him that connect all points of time and space. His container of the spice Melange lays at his feet. / / The large sand dunes near the coastal town of Florence, Oregon ( close to where I live ) served as the original inspiration to Frank Herbert for the Dune saga novels. I always thought it was really cool that his inspiration came from my neck of the woods. I have always loved this book since the first time I read it as a young boy, so here is a little tribute to Frank for the wondrous adventure he sent me on during that time. / / The original is 4800×6400 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. It was created in Sterling2, a freeware fractal application. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a couple of detail cutaways below. / / / / / /

Please view large. / © 2009 Danilo Lejardi The thing is that I´ve been delaying the creation of an image series inspired on this novel by Cirilo Villaverde. So I decided to post this image to function as a reminder for myself. Cecilia Valdés is a novel by the Cuban Cirilo Villaverde (1812–1894). It is a work of importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Cuba. / Action takes place in colonial Cuba about 1830. The young and beautiful light skinned mulatta, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of powerful land magnate and slave trader, Candido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. / Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, hopelessly in love with Cecilia is also another man, the poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta. His advances Cecilia rejects; and she conceives Leonardo’s son. / Love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last, however. He abandons her and becomes betrothed to a white upper class woman, a certain Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On the day of his wedding he is assassinated on the steps of the cathedral by Pimienta who acts on the instigation of Cecilia. He is executed, and she is thrown in prison. / Cecilia Valdés reveals the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba. There are the elite social circles of Spanish-born and creole whites; the growing number of mulattos, of which Cecilia is one, and the blacks, some slaves, some freed men. The blacks are also divided between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in Cuba, those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the wealthy in Havana. Cecilia Valdés is a canvas displaying the sexual, social, and racial interaction of the Cubans of the day. Basic render was done in Cinema 4D; rest was done in Photoshop by blending layers and doing some digital painting. / A cinema 4D render (CINEMA 4D is a commercial, cross-platform, high-end 3-D graphics application).
The Man in the Iron Mask was written by Alexandre Dumas (père), the world famous French author, who also wrote the Three Musketeers. The novel has been adopted for film through many decades, and is just as exciting today as it was back in those swashbuckling days centuries past. Concept art for a planned Graphic novel. Spent a while getting the lighting right (hopefully someone agrees!!). Had an interesting email from someone at another site where I post work. In it they claim that my work is boring, amauterish and the concepts are copied from more talented artists around! Well, I don’t care about the first two points…I am self taught and still learning! / I take exception with the last point..I am inspired by many but have yet to copy their work. That is insulting to all involved. If you have a problem please let me know and try to “fix it”. If not I hope you enjoy my work, and comment as you wish. Sorry for the tirade, but I felt that was unfair! / Shane
