Bird of Paradise 4’ x 4’ inch Acrylic and Silver Leaf on Canvas June 07 Samantha Churchill This was a commissioned work for a Bird of Paradise collector in Florida and it matched the style of her home. She had it strung to hang any of the four directions and rotates it frequently! The Art Nouveau lines give this piece a stained glass effect and matcehs well with another piece Frank Goes Elemental.

An attempt at adding a bit of art nouveau to my own style in this steampunk bust study of my character, Skogul. Done in ink and prismacolor marker with some prismacolor pencil touches on bristol.
If, as a child, you ever glanced up at the spheroid of helium-filled latex attached to a string you were holding in your hand and wondered, “What’s so much fun about a balloon?”, the startling creatures floating above Cornelius and Oliver Octavio might have you reconsider the question. Capt. Lucien Octavio (see “Adventures of Capt. Octavio”) could not help but notice his sons’ rather somber nature on the rare occasions he returned home from his marine explorations. Despite having the run of their father’s expansive (if a bit gloomy) manse and having the wreck of both an ancient pirate ship AND a submarine to explore in the back yard, the demeanor of the two boys was decidedly dour. Perhaps if they had something to interact with, he reasoned. Something truly exotic that no other boy had…Hmmm. After one of his more elaborate and daring undersea expeditions, the good Capt. disappeared into his remote laboratory for quite some time. He emerged with two of the most astonishing creatures glowing, tethered, above his head. Lucien Octavio had biogenetically engineered an abyssal anglerfish and a humpback anglerfish (species melanocetus johnsonii) to thrive, not only in the photic zone, several atmospheres out of their habitats, but in air rather than water! Bioluminescent in their deepest sea home, the fearsome fish glowed gently as they hovered above the boys, wheezing softly with their newfound lungs. And released from many megapascals of undersea pressure, they defied gravity, floating in air. Well, this certainly got Oliver and Cornelius’s attention! They named their new companions Mefisto and Necrosis and are shown here having the time of their lives (This is them having fun. Really.) in front of one of their father’s numerous specimen bowls. Capt. Octavio’s beloved octopus companion has slithered in to proffer greetings to you as well. / This original artwork and story are copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. A bit of the Catholic, angelic, tattoo work…
Colour version of the pencil drawing. Now then, the title should make more sense. Something vampiric, with the blood and a hunger. I wanted something strong and intense yet showing the feminine, soft, glorious like tatse. 2-14-09 4:20 pm It is not as great as the pencil version, but I will work on it a bit more and resubmit, now looking at the pencil version, this one needs work… / 2-21-09 added more shading and finished. Information courtesy Wikipedia here A dragonfly is a type of insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies are similar to damselflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at rest. Even though dragonflies possess 6 legs like any other insect, they are not capable of walking. Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as “nymphs”, are aquatic. Nymphs can deliver a painful bite when threatened. The wound should be cleaned thoroughly to prevent water-borne infections. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— / ACRYLIC ART CALENDARS CARDS POETRY PHOTOGRAPHY – ANIMALS PHOTOGRAPHY -CANDID SHOTS PHOTOGRAPHY – CATS AND DOGS PHOTOGRAPHY – CONTEMPORARY WORK PHOTOGRAPHY – FLOWERS PHOTOGRAPHY – INSECTS PHOTOGRAPHY – TRADITIONALLY TURKISH PHOTOGRAPHY – TREE AND TREE PARTS T-SHİRTS —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- More products available / Why not follow me on / or join me at —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / PHOTOGRAPHY: INSECTS ANTLIONS ARACHNIDS BEETLES BUTTERFLIES and MOTHS COCKCHAFER DRAGONFLIES / FLIES GRASSHOPPER/LOCUSTS HONEY BEES MANTIS WASP —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- See more of taiche at ZAZZLE / Baby Custom T-Shirts :dress that baby up with a special design on a custom t-shirt, long sleeve or onesize / Kids Custom T-Shirts .from organic t-shirts to long sleeve shirts, boys, girls, and toddlers can fill their fashion needs with a one-of-a-kind custom t-shirts for kids. Some English vernacular names, such as “devil’s darning needle” and “ear cutter”, link them with evil or injury. / -A Romanian folk tale says that the dragonfly was once a horse possessed by the devil. / -This is also seen in the Maltese culture as the word for dragonfly which is “Debba ta’ l-infern” literally means Hell’s mare. / -Swedish folklore holds that the devil uses dragonflies to weigh people’s souls. Another Swedish legend holds that trolls use the dragonflies as spindles when weaving their clothes (hence the Swedish word for dragonfly trollslända, lit. “troll’s spindle”) as well as sending them to poke out the eyes of their enemies. / -The Norwegian name for dragonflies is “Øyenstikker”, which literally means Eye Poker. / -Portugal they are sometimes called “Tira-olhos” (Eye snatcher). / -They are often associated with snakes, as in the Welsh name gwas-y-neidr, “adder’s servant”. / -The Southern United States term “snake doctor” refers to a folk belief that dragonflies follow snakes around and stitch them back together if they are injured. / -The Lithuanian word “Laum žirgis” is a composite word meaning “the Lauma’s horse”. / -In Dutch, Aeshna mixta is called “Paardenbijter” or “horse biter”. / -In some South American countries, dragonflies are also called matacaballo (horse killer), or caballito del diablo (devil’s little horse), since they were perceived as harmful, some species being quite large for an insect. / -In East Asia and among Native Americans, dragonflies have a far better reputation, one that can also be said to have positively influenced modern day views about dragonflies in most countries, in the same vein as the insect’s namesake, the dragon, which has a positive image in the east, but initially had an association with evil in the west. / -For some Native American tribes they represent swiftness and activity, and for the Navajo they symbolize pure water. Dragonflies are a common motif in Zuni pottery; stylized as a double-barred cross, they appear in Hopi rock art and on Pueblo necklaces. It is said in some Native American beliefs that dragonflies are a symbol of renewal after a time of great hardship. / -They also have traditional uses as medicine in Japan and China. In some parts of the world they are a food source, eaten either as adults or larvae. / In Indonesia, for example, they are caught on poles made sticky with birdlime, then fried in oil as a delicacy. / -Vietnamese people have a traditional way to forecast rain by seeing dragonflies: “Chuồn chuồn bay thấp thì mưa, bay cao thì nắng, bay vừa thì râm” (Dragonflies fly at low level, it is rainy; dragonflies fly at high level, it is sunny; dragonflies fly at medium level, it is shadowy). / -In some parts of the world it is considered lucky to have a dragonfly land on you, even to the point of yielding seven years of good luck. / -In the United States dragonflies and damselflies are sought out as a hobby similar to birding and butterflying, known as oding, from the dragonfly’s Latin species name, odonata. Oding is especially popular in Texas, where 225 out of a total of 457 known species of odonates in the world have been observed. With care, dragonflies can be handled and released by Oders, unlike butterflies. The band, Coheed & Cambria, uses a dragonfly as one of their symbols. Images of dragonflies were common in Art Nouveau, especially in jewelry designs. They have also been used as a decorative motif on fabrics and home furnishings. This striking tee’s design is based off of Lynnette Shelley’s artwork “Fire Horse”
Envisage this: the soft drawn out keening of stringed instuments – an empty boat floats gently alone, water slapping quietly at the sides – why is it so quiet , dark and misty – where are the people? ................................... Featured in “Out of the Past” group.

You will lose your head over this beautiful tee ;) Artwork design comes from a new series I am working on inspired by the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In this iconic image, a beautiful but dangerous Queen of Hearts as femme fatale draws her finger across her throat to signify her threatening intentions. “The Queen had only one way of settling all difficulties, great or small. ‘Off with his head!’ she said, without even looking round.” / -Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland “ View or purchase prints of The Queen of Hearts here View more of my artwork on my website
