I live cities and Paris has to be one of my favorites for taking photographs. Lots of well known sites but also evrey corner turned show a different side to the city. I took this one morning whilst stroll around the Notre Dame area.

Notre Dame de Paris is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in Paris, France, with its main entrance to the west. It is the cathedral of Paris and the seat of the Archbishop of that city. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It was restored and saved from destruction by Viollet-le-Duc, one of France’s most famous architects. The name Notre Dame means “Our Lady” in French. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, giving them a more secular look that was lacking from earlier Romanesque architecture. Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress, arched exterior supports. The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave. After the construction began and the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the cathedral’s architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued as such. The cathedral suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution in the 1790s, when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. I had no tripodd – so this was taken handheld – a very difficult thing to do. I was fascinated in the colours and wealth of this amazing building.

I love the detail of the gargoyles on top of Notre Dame. The fact they are so old and have survived so long is a testament to the craftsmen of that time.

I’ve seen this man feeding the pigeons every time I went to Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral since several years but I’ve never taken any picture of him. At D.A since a few times I discovered several pictures showing this old man, two of them received a D.D, so when a few days ago I went to Paris with my lover I said to myself that maybe we’ll see him and I will take a picture. I was taking pictures of kids feeding the birds in front of the cathedral’s entrance when he came to us posing in a very spontaneous and kind way exactly like on the photos which received those D.Ds…I was amazed and I took this picture…that’s the story. Located in Casablanca this is the 3rd largest mosque in the world. Built in the 1990s for a cost of around $500,000,000 it is big enough to house the Notre Dam or St Peter’s Basilica inside it. It can hold 25,000 people and another 90,000 in the surrounding square. It took more than 5,000 artisans to do all the fabulous carvings.

I love gargoyles, and the best of the species are the ones on Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. This was drawn in 2002 with Faber Castell Polychromos graphic pencils, on watercolor paper to make the texture rougher for the weathered stone.

An image of the front of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. This was the first time I’d ever been to anywhere in Europe on holiday, and the Notre Dame had always been near the top of my list of ‘things I want to see’ so to see it in person was breathtaking and humbling.
