My extensive collection of nautical buttons with anchors, ribbon and Naval pins. From the US and around the world. / This is a wonderful collection I started many years ago. I have many things nautical in my home. Teddy Bears, navy dress hats, boating caps, naval buttons and pins, model sailboats, lighthouses, brass ships lantern, seashells, framed artwork, upholstery fabric on chairs and throw pillows, ...oh the list goes on. Buttons and Thread I thought I’d experiment with a still life when I borrowed a friend’s Nikkor 105mm lens. I pulled these things from around the house that my wife had for decorating (she likes the country feel), and then I desaturated and selectively brought back the color of the white buttons and the colored thread. I also added texture and the Orton Effect.

I learnt the coiling and stitching technique back in 1992 at an Summer Arts Fusion workshop held in Innisfail. From this I evolved my own natural fibre form receptacles using local natural fibres. The Great Lobelia is a wildflower that prefers damp areas and higher elevations. It’s easy to find in August and September, but this plant was still blooming in October. The plant was once thought to be useful in the treatment of syphilis. / I took this photograph during a light rain beside a run-off ditch in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
