Never blogged or journaled online before so here goes… / In this little corner of the world on the eastern coast…of the South Island of New Zealand spring has finally sprung after a long and cold winter. The little cottage garden outside is waking up after its long hibernation and exploding with blossom and colour. The old plum tree looks like a canopy of white confetti and loud pink blousy blooms of camellias are now smoothering themselves over the 12 foot high bushes/trees. / On Monday the first ducklings of the season appeared in the garden…mother duck proudly showing me she had 11 fluffy followers. These numbers have already started to drop sadly, as neighbourhood cats, mine included are very attracted to them. I did successfully retrieve one from the jaws of my tabby Sam…and even managed after some searching to reunite it with a distraught mum. / Tulips, bluebells and daffodils pop up here and there and the sun has been shining this week a little more than normal. / I’ve been raising seeds assorted herbs and tomatoes on the indoor window sills..it is still too risky to put anything outside, as the fear of frosts is not over. / I completed two small paintings this week. It was an experiment in using a limited palette. Both paintings were of feet…ballet dancers feet. The colours I used were Titanium white and Raw Umber…quite surprising how just two colours can create so many tones. / I sold 6 paintings over the last 6 weeks…at two large annual exhibitions, one in Auckland and the other in Wellington. I sometimes wonder where mypaintings end up..the kind of homes they go to. Imagine if you could tag them to find out! / I have really enjoyed my first week on RedBubble, found lots of supportive, creative people out there and look forward to seeing and sharing my work with you all. / There is a cloud of waxeyes outside my window as I type this, greenfinches/goldfinches busily eating seed from the feeders in the garden…and this morning I was woken up my the a very impressive song from a grey warbler…so happy spring is here. Enjoy your week.

Schools in New Zealand are in their second and last week of holidays and then they return for the final term before Christmas. Last night we felt two earthquakes here in Dunedin. At 6:24 on the evening of Sunday September 30th, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the Puysegur Trench at a location 200 km north-west of the Auckland Islands. The quake occurred near the interface between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, in an area where the Australian Plate is sliding under the Pacific Plate at a rate of approximately 32 mm per year. The motion is not smooth and, while averaged out at 32 mm per year, actually occurs through spasmodic events such as earthquakes which account for months or years of accumulated strain. The quake was located 475 km south-west of Invercargill and the shockwave of the earthquake registered on seismographs located in Otago and Southland at about 6:25 p.m. Residents of Southland, Otago, Fiordland and South Canterbury felt the shaking. At 10:48 p.m. another large earthquake struck the Puysegur Trench area. This quake was measured at Magnitude 6.8 and located at a depth of 10-12 km about 35 km away from the first event, being at 235 km west-north-west of Auckland Island. / The shaking from this event 505 km south-west of Invercargill reached the seismograph at Wanaka less than a minute later and the tremor was felt in Southland, Otago, Fiordland, South Canterbury and Christchurch city. By this time many people were aware of the earlier earthquake, and hence more alert to any sign of another event. Since last night, the area has been relatively quiet.

I am all painted out at the moment. Tomorrow we travel two and half hours south to Invercargill to set my first solo exhibition. It’s been a very busy month and I think I might have a week off painting this coming week to recharge. / Anyhow it is a first for me and I just hope I sell something. / The exhibition is for 5 weeks and at a department store in Invercargill called H & J Smith…they have large coffee rooms there called The Copper Kettle (yup, sounds quite quaint doesn’t it?)...an ideal first platform for me to exhibit. It’s on for 5 weeks until 7 January 2008. / I will be giving 10% of any sales to CCS Disability Action Southern. / Have to try and pack 16 paintings into the car tomorrow. / Thanks for your supportive comments over the last couple of months since I joined Redbubble. It has been encouraging and I am so enjoying seeing the amazing diversity of art and talent around the world. Being able to ‘talk’ to the artists has been fantastic. / Thank you / Fond regards / Anni

Amazing night. You can now see flames leaping hundreds of feet into the air on the first visible range in Cachagua, from the hill in front of the post office. That’s about 25 miles from town. Worry about the skillful jump ability of flame. / The sun was setting, a massive cloud of smoke over the valley lit bright pink, totally astounding. It’s getting closer. / We now have a full tent camp for the firefighters set up in the old Carmel Valley airstrip, 500 tents, men, equipment, kitchens, engines. Awesome. They’re great guys. Signs are appearing on fences “Thank you Fire Fighters!” / I went up at sunset. As it grew dark, lights on the camp grounds popped on illuminating the field. Neighbors drove and walked up with their dogs and kids. We looked at maps and got updates. People pointed, talked old stories, asked over and over if the guys needed anything. The community response universally so far is WE ARE SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE!! Zero sense of invasion or imposition. We may be getting national guard or army here too. It’s pretty intense. / So much of Big Sur burned, you just want to cry and cry. And so much saved too, very few houses went considering the size and ferocity of the fires. It sounds like all the resorts and beautiful places in Big Sur got saved, like Ventana, Nepenthe, Esalen, Deetjens, H Miller. Mostly from people refusing to leave and stamping out cinders falling from the sky with their feet! I know it’s going to be hard to look at again. They’ve let people go back to their homes and land, lifted the evacuations from there and Palo Colorado, which did not get burnt after all from what I understand. It’s a bit like hearing gossip and fiction with a bit of truth. All of it drama, some of it actually happening. / Regina and Pat on Tassajara Road have not evacuated yet. They watch the flames shooting off the ridges from their bed at night. Ty is holding firm in Trampa Canyon. Mike’s posting wonderful blogs on his Cachagua Store site with pretty much daily updates, news of crews coming in, feeding the fire guys, songs and beer and attaboys. We’re apparently getting about fifty volunteers from Australia and New Zealand. THANK YOU!! Guys here from Minnesota and New York and Oregon. It’s a thoroughly remarkable experience on every level. / Zero sense so far we’ll get evacuated from the Village, it’s still far from us. Depending on wind direction, you’re scared one day and calm the next. / Late afternoon and into the evening yesterday a huge wet fog moved in from the coast, and by nightfall had covered Carmel Valley. Good news, we were all glad to see it. The weathermen are all fucked up. Predicting heat waves and cooling spells simultaneously, reigning hysteria. Middays out here are hot, in the 100’s. / There’s a kind of stimulated kinship when you meet folks, everybody on a high of adrenalin and emotion, nobody knowing where this damn thing is going to move. Some said the shooting ridge flames last night were from the backfires being lit. They talk about our mountains as the place to hold the line, that ridge is where we make our stand, this canyon may go, that point is in danger, using names unfamiliar to locals….it’s like being in a general’s tent with warfare plotted out on maps. As Mike Jones said in one of his blogs, you get an intimacy and new respect for the land with the google terrain maps you haven’t had from living here. / We’re all in pretty good spirits it seems to me. While it’s frightening to think of the damn thing raging out of control and sweeping the whole central coast, it seems unlikely. I think they’re getting a handle on it, figuring out how to fight it. It’s rough terrain. But we’re strong. And, of course, you knew that. / Best to you all, and heartfelt thanks for your good wishes. / Barbara

Captains Log star date, 03.10.2008, I take off every second Friday to do things for myself, get a bit of balance back into life, today I chose to go to Wainuiomata Beach at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island. This is about a 50 min drive from home in the Hutt valley, not far in K’s but a tricky winding road that needs a little caution. Up at 4.30am, arrived at 5.30am, pitch black, missed the turn off in the dark, this is an end of the world location, no lights here and the sheep are scared! I could tell it was windy but didn’t know how windy till I tried to open the car door, holy Sh*t!, this is one of those locations that they tell you not to leave your car there too long on a windy day or it will get sand blasted. Walked down to the beach in the dark, magnificent clear sky full of stars (would have liked more clouds for drama) the noise was deafening the rocks that I’d chosen to photograph are big suckers and I say that coz there isn’t anything in the pictures to give scale, I think that the main rock is about 6m hight and 8m wide, they show up on google earth, that gives you an idea of the power of the waves hitting it. every couple of mins there would be a hugh boom as a the largest wave in the set smacks the rock, I was lucky, the 50k wind was blowing off shore so there was no sea spray to contend with, if it had been a southerly I’d have had to go home for fear of drenching the camera. As it was, I have a heavy manfrotto tripod and the camera was strapped around my neck, I wedged myself onto a rock and started shooting, these are all taken on a Nikon D700 with a Tamron 17-35mm lens. I’m really pleased with the results, ended up soaked from the knee down, I asked the guy who sold me the walking boots if they are waterproof, he said tottaly except the big hole at the top where you put your foot, he was right, I walked back to the car with a half a litre of sea water in each boot, took the whole journey home to get feeling back in my feet, you can tell the ones were I got a soaking. I shot over 300 frames on Raw, about 3.5 gig of info, I will put up about 12 shortly. Ken Wrgiht, warm and safe, at home.

Yep – I’ve done it. I kicked myself off 1:1 macro. It’s so nice going into the group and not having to moderate or check everything 3x over. Big sigh. I really enjoyed the time I had there, and i learnt a lot. About myself, aobut photography, and about artists egos ! / I don’t regret the time I spent there at all. But I feel wonderfully Freeeeeeeeeeeee now. (party at moi’s!!) Anyway – In a few days I’ll be off down to the South Island for a week for the Marlbourough garden and WINE festival. You don’t think I’m going down for the gardens do you??? I haven’t picked up my camera since I got home from the US so I guess I’ll have to check hte batteries, make sure it’s clean in the next few days. Hopefully I’ll have a bit more time now to work on my photos from the US of which I still have only about 2878 left to process . I have some great ones in there – just have to get to them!! Cheers / Robyn

  • Australia/New Zealand Trip... Hulp!

A month ago the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania awarded me a spot on a March 2009 trade mission to Australia and New Zealand. / Never been there… sounded like a trip of a lifetime. But… but.. but… While they will pay most of the cost (everything but dinners/drinks) the mission lasts eight days… in three cities (Melbourne, Sidney and not sure of the New Zealand city yet). It will involve four days in the air going to and from, and however long the trip will take from Australia to New Zealand. Each day will be filled with meetings (three to five meetings daily). So… eight days of meetings, four days of travel… best part of two weeks away from my work (I am a partner and managing editor of business magazines). Most of my work would involve writing a major piece on the fit between the Pennsylvania business culture and those of the countries I’d visit. But… but… It will still cost me a lot, and I will lose about two weeks from my management responsibilities and simultaneously have to do a lot of my editing by internet on top of the many hours of work during the days of the trip. Sigh… In some ways it is a trip of a lifetime (and of course my wife wants to go… hmmm… but for pesky some reason that expenditure is mine, go figure…). I have until Monday to notify the folks at the commerce dept. re. my decision. And frankly, this is a lot of work and a lot of money for… for… well, I’m kind of wondering what’s in it for me. Can’t really afford to add more days to the trip away from the job. And while it could be cool to see those cities after work, well, there are a lot of cities I still haven’t seen that won’t take four days of travel. Anybody got any advice? Most photo opportunities will be at night when I probably will also have to do my editing chores. Sounds like a whirlwind… and I’m not sure the benefits outweigh the costs. Hulp!

Hi all – Over the past three weeks I have been doing a lot of travel around the place and have visited the North Island of New Zealand and spent 9 days driving around Tasmania on holidays. I had a wonderful time travelling and spent much of it taking pictures (mostly above the water). I have a few new photogrpahs to upload, which I will be doing in the coming days. In other big news for me, I proposed to Sophie on the beach on Wineglass Bay in Tasmania last week, and she said yes, so we are now engaged. It is a very happy time for us and our families.

Just bringing you up to date with the ‘happenings’ over the last fortnight. On Wednesday July 15th we had an earthquake! I know New Zealand is prone to them but this was quite a big one, even by our standards. It hit at 9.22pm and was 7.8. It was Fiordland’s biggest quake biggest for 80 years. The epicentre was located in Dusky Sound at the south-west corner of the South Island. I was drying my hair at the time in the kitchen…hairdryer in my ear, when I heard my youngest daughter Lucy shouting out “Mum, Mum, earthquake!!!”…I switched off the dryer and poked my head around into the living room to see the central light fitting swinging to and fro from the ceiling. It was a long smooth quake, not a jolter. I reminded my daughter about standing in the doorway it we got another one. Back in 1986 I had been at the epic centre of a very powerful earthquake when I lived in the Bay of Plenty, North Island of New Zealand. The house was a shambles, heaps of damage and months of disruption followed…getting water from a tanker, cracks in the roads, chimney demolished etc… to name a few. Fortunately this time no damage. We have had a cold winter this year and a few mornings have seen the city’s roads and paths resembling ice-rinks. The gritter lorries do what they can but Dunedin is a hilly place (the steepest street in the world is a few streets away from me)…so not the best territory for ice. There are signs of spring coming, tulip leaves and crocus leaves are starting to break through the soil and the local ducks that visit the garden are starting to find partners and getting quite territorial. The first rhododendron ‘Christmas Cheer’ (pink) is out in bloom in the garden and the camellia’s are in bud. I made some Anzac Biscuits in the week. It was so nippy temperature wise I thought putting the oven on to bake something would warm things up…it did. It filled the kitchen with a great aroma. I list the recipe below; if you like biscuits/cookies which are better than that store bought ones. I also took one of my paintings in to a local exhibition which is starting next week, painted another picture ‘Tallulah with Tulips’ / / and wrote a poem: ‘Just Before Midnight’ which is in my ‘Writing’ section here on RB. I continue to hack away at old magazines and add odds and ends to my visual diary/inspirational scrapbook. It is a great way of keeping together ideas for future paintings. Not only photos and pictures but also pop down in writing anything that I find of interest…odd song lyrics, a line from a poem that inspires me…the name of a book or film that I hope to view/read. I have always been keen on making notes, but notes made on odd pieces of paper are doomed…keep them together in ONE place. So when you feel inspired to paint, you know where they are. Anyway enough prattling from me…I am off for a hot cup of tea and a piece of lavender biscotti. Hugs to all my RB friends on here, have a beautiful creative week ahead wherever you are. Fond regards ~ Anni  Giant Anzac biscuits / Makes : 8 / Ingredients / • 1 cup plain flour / • 1 cup rolled oats / • 1 cup desiccated coconut / • 3/4 cup brown sugar / • 125g butter, chopped / • 2 tablespoons golden syrup / • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda / Method / 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Sift flour into a large bowl. Stir in oats, coconut and sugar. / 2. Place butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until melted. Remove from heat. Combine bicarbonate of soda and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. Stir into golden syrup mixture (mixture might become frothy). Add immediately to flour mixture and stir until well combined. / 3. Roll mixture, 1/4 cup at a time, into balls. Place 4 biscuits on each baking tray. Flatten to about 12cm (diameter) round, allowing room for biscuits to spread. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, swapping trays after 10 minutes, or until biscuits are golden. Allow biscuits to cool completely on trays. Serve. / Notes & tips / • You can store Anzac biscuits in an airtight container for up to 3 days. / • These are crisp Anzac biscuits. If you prefer them chewy, flatten biscuits to 10cm (diameter) rounds and reduce cooking time by 1 to 2 minutes.
