  • The Melbourne Cup - it's a sickening experience

The Melbourne Cup horse race provides perfect opportunity for much of the local workforce to declare an unofficial bludge day on the Monday preceding Cup Day. Most employees will sheepishly report to their employers that they’ve contracted a mystery 24 hour virus. For many, they seem to traditionally contract a virus on the first Monday in November, as it provides ideal opportunity to study the form guide. The Melbourne Cup is run and won on the first Tuesday in November, but it’s the Monday that’s become as much as a tradition as Cup Day itself. Switched-on employers are becoming increasingly aware of this ‘Monday Phenomenon’ and stay close by the phone to answer the flood of expected calls. My best wishes are extended to all who are feeling a little off-colour today, and I trust you’re feeling better by tomorrow morning in readiness for a chicken and champagne breakfast. Now to my red-hot tip for Cup Day; / The fillies at the track are short-priced favourites to kick-off their stilettos by 4pm due to being sozzled near the mounting yard. Get well soon.

I am thinking about compiling a book about human relationships. This is the first little bit I have written for it and thought I would post it. May add or change as my writing continues. What is human life for if not for relationship? If God is the creator when he created another did he not do so in order to experience more joy in his/her existence? However somewhere something has become confused. Could it be the Devil that created the confusion or did God become confused or over whelmed with the concept he created? Either way humanity has a choice. To embrace relationship or to continue on it’s present path. You see I believe that humans in general cannot handle relationship. They have found it too hard and too powerful. They have given up on believing in purity and their hearts and perhaps God. I believe at least in present society that the norm is to place survival and achievement and destination ahead of basic open and honest relationship. That this is inherent from government and big business right down to our personal intimate relationships. I believe so few trust life or others and so few are willing to try. Far easier to pretend we are strong and pure than to actually be it. However with all this pretence who are we really trying to prove ourselves to? I believe that we are so concerned about what others think that we do not have the space to connect to who we really are or the truth of life or God. Further as most of us don’t trust each other anyway we are really only looking for validation from a society that few of us even respect. www.leapoffaith.com.au www.bodylinecal.com

Hi, I have just commenced moderating a new group called Creative Inspirations. It is in it’s first 2 days of creation and I am very excited by where it will evolve to. In brief the group is about inspiring people to go really deep in feeling and thought with their creative pursuits and life in general. I believe that the world could be far more free and enjoyable if we went deeper than what society seems to condition us to do. Further I am confident that creative people have the passion and power to stimulate the community to want to be more aware, more passionate and more free. Best Wishes Tony.

  • All Writers Take Heed

I have looked over a number of writing sites, or sites that offer some accommodation for writers, on the Internet. I don’t claim to have an exhaustive list, but I have (private) bookmarks to over a hundred, with notes. Of those, nearly every one is exploitative of writers and destructive to members’ hopes of a career. Of all those sites, there are only three I would personally consider having anything to do with. What is my problem with the others? I am not a lawyer, but I have worked in areas where I needed the ability to correctly interpret legal documents, and I have read a good deal of advice for authors on the legal matters that affect them. Nearly every site on the Internet has Terms of Service that are legally binding contracts, and that are disastrous for anyone agreeing to them. Certain clauses should be a “red flag” to any serious writer to avoid any site including them. Most notably, look for any of the words perpetual, irrevocable, or world-wide; if you see any of these, you’re on very thin ice, and I suggest you ask a lawyer to evaluate the entire agreement before you consent to it. If you see all those words in one agreement, unless you’re being offered many times your most optimistic estimate of what the work may be worth, run. Why? Because any agreement with that clause effectively prevents you from ever selling that work again in any market. You’ve given up so much, the work has no practical value to anyone else. Even the relatively honest sites fail to tell you one brutal fact of publishing: the moment you post a work to any site on the Internet (with the possible exception of your own blog, if it has few readers), you can only “resell” it. To offer any work you have previously posted as unpublished is technically fraud, and will get you blacklisted if you get caught. Considering Google caches, the Wayback Machine, and similar tools, which some publishers check, your risk of getting caught is high; too high to be worth it. So be very careful what sites you join, and post only work you don’t intend to sell (exception: you can, of course, self-publish anything of yours you haven’t sold exclusive rights to). Consider the loss of payment for publication as an investment in publicity instead. I know some of you don’t want to become professional authors. That’s fine; there’s no reason you should have to do so. I still advise you to use caution, in case you later change your mind, but I do agree all writers have the right to do as they please. However, please do not be irresponsible and recommend sites when you have not read or are not capable of understanding the Terms of Service. This is harmful to other writers, and unfair to them if they rely on your recommendation. There are sites which pay, or claim to pay, writers based on the number of readers of their work. Some of these are set up so, in practice, no writer will ever be paid. The others may pay writers, but most writers will only see a few cents a month. Such sites keep such a huge percentage of what you, as a writer, earn for them that you will normally get only a pittance. If you are one of the very few lucky ones, the ones such sites advertise as success stories, then your writing is so good you could make more on the “real” market. I have stated there are only three sites I consider a serious writer can safely join. One of those three sites is RedBubble – yes, despite my unhappiness with how writers are treated here, their legal agreement is much more reasonable than most sites, so it is at least possible to belong without active harm. Also, my vocal unhappiness with RedBubble despite the fact it is one of only three sites I’d consider joining should point up just how awful I have found the other sites to be when I looked into them. It should also make plain just how dire I believe the need is for a real writer’s haven on the Web. For the curious, those three sites are: / ForwardMotion / RedBubble / Elfwood (Disclaimer: I haven’t visited or checked out Elfwood in quite some time. It may or may not still be a fit site to join.) These comments, of course, exclude sites for writers that are not in any sense writing communities. Preditors and Editors, for example, is an excellent site for locating the publishers and editors most likely to scam you, but it is not a community for writers.

  • 21.10.08 Compassion, Courage, and Friendship RedBubble Book Review: Is This The Worst Art Publication To Date?
    by ozlat

RedBubble claims to be an open and inclusive website where you can share your creative genius with the world, but with the new RedBubble book publication ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it might leave people wondering where this creative genius got to in this instance. Mind you, the only people left wondering will be the people that haven’t got their grubby little hands on ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, everyone else will be enthralled as they flip the pages and allow themselves to be reduced to tears, anger, laughter, smiles, and deep thought time and time again. At first sight, ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’ seems like the perfect collectors item. A perfect square measuring 21.5 cm in all directions, and the spine labelled with the source and title, it would seem that the exterior design was thought through for the avid book collector. It’s not only bright and airy, but the aesthetics of the cover make you feel at ease and loved. Now sitting on the train and heading to college, I manage to be publicly seduced and buckle to the passionate gestures of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’. The exquisite craftsmanship continues, with each captivating image and inspiring literature, matching perfectly to tell a story that might otherwise be lost. Someone made an effort and it certainly shows. The typeface has also been perfectly selected to match the theme and only add to the experience, it isn’t distracting and I don’t have to squint or learn another language to read it. Sure there are plenty of thought provoking images to immerse yourself in, but I say it once again, the literature that accompanies is a match made in heaven. Don’t take my word for it though, because as I sit here on a peak hour train critiquing ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it seems I have some new-found friends reading along with me. The IT guy to my left, the somewhat hungover looking blondie to my right, and the people I can’t see but can feel breathing on my neck behind me (I know you’re there). I do have one hang up though, and it could be one of personal preference, but I was disappointed that the links to each artist where at the back of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, as opposed to being directly beneath the featured art or literature piece. It might sound picky, but as a matter of convenience, it would allow the reader to more freely access their favorite artist or writer and go view their other works online. The works from the RedBubble community collected in this book illuminate the power of Compassion, Courage, and Friendship. They show us that when we go beyond our fears and truly see someone different to us, we look at something that can set us free. In concluding this review, I asked Sandra Iov, a fellow photography student to critique two images in ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, and here are her two favorites and an explanation of why: I Dreamt Of An Angel II by chrisdade “I like the contrast between the straight lines and the sharpness of the surroundings in comparison to the softness of the skin and shadows of the boys. I like the idea that although they may be perceived as homosexuals, it plays against the idea of their sin with the angel wings. It says what they do is not a sin.” – Sandra Brothers by Jinx “The older boy is keeping the younger brother safe from the darkness in the background. The bridge leads to the unknown and they look like they’re about to take that journey together. The contrast between the light on the boys and that of the forest is powerful.” – Sandra

Or, ‘the writing challenge that ate my soul’. National Novel Writing Month is almost on us! I’ve been convinced that it’ll be a really excellent experience to write 50,000 words in November. I’m also thinking it could be something of a nightmare, LOL! So plot lines are sort of thought of, characters built (damn, still need to finalise names!) and nerves frayed. The flip side is that I expect I’ll be madly writing all month to get the word count finished, so spending less time on RB. But I’ll be back :)

  • A Few of My Favourite Things
    by Holly Ringland

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas ...

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas I didn’t exactly need arm twisting when I found out there was a free event happening at the National Gallery on Saturday afternoon: I would have handed over my credit card willingly to take respite from the unforgiving heat in an air conditioned cardboard box if I could have. Instead, for two sublime hours, I sat in a small theatre listening to some of Australia’s finest writers read from poems and novels by contemporaries of Degas, whose glorious art is the NGA’s current exhibition. I was entrenched in Paris, the bawdy house of Europe, through the affairs and cross-dressing of George Sand, Zola’s descriptions of the glittering displays and the dark underside of Paris under the Second Empire, Balzac’s account of an orgy, Baudelaire’s questioning of Romantic values, Flaubert’s platonic love letters and Théophile Gautier’s description of the Opera. I was swept from Paris to Russia to London via poetry and prose selections that left me breathless with spells brewing in my eyes and the words of classics lingering around me in a velvety fog. As I walked out of the theatre and back in the bright lemony light of day and the outside world, I felt the swirling words and sumptuous art settle over me, Paris soaking into my skin. The loveliness lingered well into my weekend and I have thought to myself often since how enamored I was by the experience, how instantly I fell in love with the writings of Degas’ contemporaries and the brush strokes of Degas’ social commentary layered under portraits of ballerinas and top-hat gentlemen or horse racing and carnivals in green countryside. I recognised the feeling; I feel the same way when I come across a piece of writing or artwork on Red Bubble that takes my breath away and envelopes me. As I was driving home, I thought to myself given the chance, I would have added that afternoon to my favourites. Ever since, I’ve been thinking about our favourites and what the function of ‘favouriting’ something means on Red Bubble. To me, that one little strip of light boxes on my Red Bubble page is my own personal gallery, my own personal bookshop; a cool quiet sanctuary that exists wholly and solely for my pleasure, delight and wonder. I favourite work that changes me, that alters who I was before I absorbed the work to who I was afterward. Being able to ‘favourite’ work on Red Bubble fills me with the same itching in my fingertips that I feel when I walk into an empty house and immediately start collecting things to fill the space with; colour, sentences, textures, moments, scents, themes and life. Since Saturday, I have been sumptuously and gloriously going back through all my favourites, reading your words and tracing the stroke of your pens, your ink, your paint, seeing the world through your eye. I found myself, after a page or two, hungry and cold and aching to physically crawl into and immerse myself in your work; to fill my belly with your colours and vowels and frames and sentences, to wrap myself in each piece and hibernate amidst such vibrant and potent creative energy: because like Degas and Balzac and Zola, our art and our writing are pieces of ourselves, whether built from experience or imagination, that we have set adrift in the world to say, here I was, here’s what I observed about being alive, here’s the ink I’ve spilled, the paint I’ve shaped, the charcoal I’ve recycled, the image I’ve scored on negative, here’s the mark I’ve left behind. Whether we’re Degas (or not) we are each of us artists in our own right, brave enough to allow our craft to see the light of day. I humbly thank you for the pieces of yourself I fill my Favourites sanctuary with.

  • A message from God to someone he Knows.

Precious friends, I give God thanks for you all, and your prayers and support. You are so precious to me and the lord. While I was praying early this morning for each of you, as I doe each day, The holy Spirit allowed me to feel a members pain and the lord laid it on my heart to share with you the words that you are about to read. This is for someone here, and I do not know, but the Lord Jesus knows. I pray it will bless all, but especially the one whom God sends it to. [Gods personal message to someone he knows]. Zephaniah 3:17-20 [Common English Bible].The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.” (18) The LORD has promised: Your sorrow has ended, and you can celebrate. (19) I will punish those who mistreat you. I will bring together the lame and the outcasts, then they will be praised, instead of despised, in every country on earth. (20) I will lead you home, and with your own eyes you will see me bless you Then you will be famous everywhere on this earth. I, the LORD, have spoken! 1. As a minister of God, I have often counselled Gods children who have come to me with all sorts of problems and Challenges. One of the challenges that was most common is that they feel guilt and condemnation. / Their thoughts were filled with guilt over what they had done in their past, someone they hurt, something they said or done. One precious child of God would wake up at nights with fear that God was angry with her. Another would feel he was being judged by God because he was always depressed about his past. satan would like all of us to think and feel that way. But you need to understand something. God is Love and he loves you. God has spoken to you today in Zephaniah Ch3. Does that sound like God is angry with you his child. NO!. / One of the strategies satan uses is to get you to feel shame, guild and worthless because of your past. I knew a dear friend who would not pray as they felt God was angry because of the things they did in the past. They would cower and feel so unclean. He said that he knew God had forgiven him, but he still felt shamed and unworthy. Beloved, here Gods minister now as I speak to you under his anointing and in the power of his Holy Spirit. If that is you, and I know someone feels like this or similar, God has something to say to you personally right now. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. When you asked Jesus into your heart / He washed away every sin, every wrong, and you became a brand new person. You became a brand new person. Notice that in 2 Corinthians 5:17, it clearly says that the old things have passed away. God does not see your sins or wrongs, as they have been washed away in the Blood of Jesus. God does not remember them anymore. Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Here God is talking about his children. Now before this was fulfilled, the price for Sin had to be paid in full, before God could forget their sins and wrongs. Jesus Gods son paid tat price in Full. God sees you through the finished work of his son Jesus. He sees the Blood of Jesus applied to your heart. He has forgiven you and does not remember your sinful past. When you received Jesus as saviour, you became a new person. Now you have a new father, and you have the DNA of God. You are brand new. Often satan will try and bring to your thoughts things that you did and then get you to think or focus on them. When he does this just tell him, “I have no sinful past, as the Lord Jesus you thought you could destroy, rose from the dead and his blood paid the price for my forgiveness, and that sacrifice was excepted by God, and the blood has washed away all my sinful past from Gods memory and mine”. Tell satan, you are born again and Jesus lives in you! / There is no need to feel unworthy, shame or guilt. / / 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. / The Blood of Jesus never stops working and is all powerful. Precious friend, See yourself as God sees you. He sees you righteous in the righteousness of Jesus. He sees you as his son/daughter. You have the same father as Jesus. Hallelujah! / There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. [Romans 8:1] / / Colossians 1:12-14 [Amplified Bible] Giving thanks unto the Father, of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has made us meet [Qualified] us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: (13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath [translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son]: (14) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Now you know for sure that God in Christ Jesus has made you worthy to be his child, and that you are forgiven. There is no condemnation to you. You’re a new creation. Hallelujah! No more need to ever feel guilt or shame. You now can come boldly to your Father, knowing he has forgotten your sinful past and welcomes you to his presence as his dear child. I will close with Zephaniah 3-17-20 our opening scripture. The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. (20) I will lead you home, and with your own eyes you will see me bless you / Amen.

The Australian Travel Photography and Writing group is pleased to announce Greg Barton, Editor of Australian Traveller magazine as our group patron. This is an exciting development for our group, and one which will most likely lead to group members being published in Australian Traveller magazine. Greg has kindly offered to provide magazine subscriptions to prize winners of our feature group challenges. Members of our group have been published in Australian Traveller, so it seems a natural progression for this group to endorse Australian Traveller magazine as the recommended Australian travel magazine. Greg told me he is “a big fan of RedBubble” and is looking forward to being associated with our group. So folks, there you have it. Your opportunity to become a published photographer and travel writer is on the cards. Greg and I still have a few things to discuss, but Greg being on a deadline for the upcoming edition of Australian Traveller magazine, he and I will put the finishing touches on what will hopefully lead to members being published in Australia’s best travel magazine. / Greg Barton / Editor – Australian Traveller magazine / www.australiantraveller.com Darren Stones / Group Host / Australian Travel Photography and Writing group
