Indeed, where is the unicorn? In the misty atmosphere in the forest near Lage Vuursche on this December morning all sorts of spooky beasts might come into the picture from behind some dark tree, or at least it would seem so. Many thanks fo Justin for his very imaginative suggestion. Near Lage Vuursche, 13th December 2007, 10.04 am / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-200 mm at 82 mm / F 7.1, 1/80, ISO 200

This suits my mood right now! A tad deflated after some recent events so I’ve shied away from local photography and used some of my favourite stock-artists’ work. Kudos and thanks to Marcus, and gsdark for not only approving the finished work, but allowing it to go up for sale. You are both legends! This little guy was wondering around in the streets near his home in a township called Orange Farm, just outside Johannesburg. I snapped this shot when my son’s school Interact committee build a house for the underprivileged community there. I just loved the way he was wondering around, oblivious to the fact that his shoe had come off and was lying in the dusty streets somewhere!!!!! A pure watercolour painted on Waterford 300gsm paper using W/N watercolour paints. 20×25”

When we were children we were always creating art. We buried our hands deep in the Playdough of life and made monsters, houses, teddy bears. Our fingers were icky with Crayola. Our lives were rich with the flavor of learning, building, being. And even now, for those of us who are parents, we delight in the genius of our children. We encourage, praise and nurture their creativity. We understand it is central to who they are and how they grow. Where does it go? Why do we so often lose this creative spark? Is it the schooling, the harsh reality of making our way in the world, simple loss of interest? We age and our lives fill with mortgages, careers, caring, commuting. Does plasticine or creativity have meaning in this struggle? Is it important to continue to create and what can we do to get it back? Let us know what you think. Feel free to show one of your or your children’s works.
