  • Weird Creatures and Photoshop Transform Tools
    by Julie Langford

Ok, so here is how I used the Edit transform tools in Photoshop to create / / Wiseman / !http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/art/cropped/...

Ok, so here is how I used the Edit transform tools in Photoshop to create / / Wiseman / and Fish Monster / / / Have loads of fun and be creative – things just appear right before your eyes using this method. / / 1. Open Photoshop and create a new transparent document 3200 high by 2400 wide [you can post a Tshirt with these dimensions as well as an art piece]. / / 2. Create a new layer and fill the bottom layer with solid black [you will need this dark background to see what you are doing later]. / / / / 3. Working on the top, tranparent layer – draw a random shape using the pen tool [create smooth curves by clicking and dragging, until you get back to your first point to close the path]. / / / / 4. Down on the bottom right click on the Paths tab on the layers palette. At the bottom of the palette, click on the convert to selection icon [shown in red below] – this will convert your path to a selection. / / / / 5. Fill this selection with a multicoloured gradient [or two colours of your choice]. / / / / 6. Click on Edit [up the top], then on Free Transform. This puts a border around your selection so that you can resize it. hit enter when you are happy with the resize to apply it. Then use the move tool in the toolbar on the left to move it to the centre of your canvas. / / / / 7. Back in the bottom right Layers palette, click back onto the layer tab. Duplicate the top layer [right click it and click duplicate]. / / 8. Working on the top layer again, click Edit, Transform, rotate. This puts a border around your image and allows you to drag the corners to rotaate the layer. Rotate it enough so that it moves slightly away from the layer beneath [see below]. Hit enter to apply the rotation. / / / / 9. Repeat the layer duplication and rotate until you have about 6 layers – keep the rotation reasonably uniform. / / / / 10. In the layers palette, click the top layer, hold ctrl on the keyboard and click all the other layers – except the bottom, black layer. This will highlight [select] them all. Once selected, righ click them, and click on merge layers. You will now have two layers in the layers palette again. A black layer [at the bottom], and a new layer with your rotation work above it. / / 11. Working on the top layer, click on Edit, transform and warp. this puts a grid over the image, which you can drag in multiple places and directions to completely change the appearance of your image. Work with this until you have a long warped shape like below. hit enter to aply the warp efect. / / / / 12. Repeat the whole process again, duplicating and rotating the layers until you have something like the image below. / / / / 13. Select all the layers except the black layer again and merge them. [youre now back to two layers again]. / / 14. Duplicate the top layer again, move it away from the other layer on your canvas. Warp it so that it is longer and thinner than the original layer that you duplicated [see below] / / / / 15. Click Edit, Free Transform to resize it. / / / / 16, Rotate it and place it over the other layer on your canvas. In the layer palette, drag the long thin layer to underneath the other layer, so that it appears underneath it in the platte [and on your canvas]. / / / / 17. Select both layers [but not the black layer] and merge them. / / 18. Click on image [up the top], and then on rotate canvas, then on 90 degrees CW. Duplicate the top layer, then click on Edit, Transform, then flip horozontally. Now move this new layer over until it lies side by side to the other layer. Select both layers [but not the black layer], and merge them. / / 19. Working on the top layer, click layer up the top, and then New, and then Layer. Draw an oval selection using the circular marquee tool in the eye area, and fill it with white. / / / / 20. Duplicate this layer and drag it over using the move tool to cover the other eye with a white oval. / / 21. Create another new layer, and use the paintbrush and black, and click once on each eye white to create pupils. Ctrl click all the eye layers in the layer pallette and merge them. / / 22. Working on this eye layer, click the word Layer [up the top], then Layer style, then Inner shadow. Apply the settings below to give your eyes life. / / / / 23. Click on the black layer in the layer palette, then click on Layer, new layer up the top to create a new layer above the black layer. / / 24. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool and draw a shape within your image for a beak [see below]. / / / / 25. Fill this selection shape with a dark grey to yellow gradient [top to bottom]. / / 26. Still working on this beak layer, click on Layer [up the top], layer style, Inner Shadow, and use similar settings to when you did the eyes to give depth the the beak. / / 27. Crtl click all the layers except the black layer and merge layers. You are now back to two layers – one black, and one with your image above it. It will look something like the image below. / / / / To save your image to post as art on a black background, go to file, save as, and save as a jpeg. This will merge and flatten the work. / / To save your work to post as a Tshirt, first, click the eye icon next to the black layer in the layer palette to make it disappear – your black background will become invisible. Now go to file, save as, and save as a png file. / / Voila – you have created a critter using transform tools in Photoshop. / / You can also use this method with parts of photographs, like I did with Fish monster. Try all sorts of things to get neat effects – a spoon, as nail, a scewdriver even. / / Most importantly, transform, transform, duplicate and transform some more – the more you use, the better your results will be. / / Have fun! /

I have a short attention span. Which is likely why I can’t settle on any one genre of photography and DEFINATELY why the thought of answering 50 questions sets my insides a-trembling. So instead I though I would give you just TEN completely weirdarse things about me. 1. I have a phobia of touching frozen things. When I do its like nails going down a chalkboard {{shudders}} 2. I can suck spaghetti into my mouth and wriggle it about so that it comes out of my nose. I know… its a God-given talent, you have my permission to be envious. 3. If I see someone else’s spit in the bathroom sink when I go to brush my teeth I will throw up. EVERY time! I think thats a hangover from when I was pregnant with my eldest and had morning sickness… every day. I even threw up the morning I gave birth to him! 4. I have weirdarse little toes. All the others are perfectly formed but my little toe is a freak. Its like when I was made the big-fella upstairs ran out of moulding clay or something and didn’t have enough to finish me because his clay order wasn’t due to be delivered until Monday. 5. I only ever use Smart Sugar in my coffee, and yet I have not noticed a notable increase in my IQ. 6. I own a beanie with ear flaps. WHAT? Like I care about fashion when my aural health is at stake? 7. I can say the alphabet backwards faster than I can say it forwards. Hmmm… maybe that Smart Sugar is working! 8. I can’t sleep unless I have at least a top and knickers on. Don’t get me wrong, I am no prude by any means… I happily dance naked around the house – weather permitting – but I have this fear that there is going to be an emergency in the middle of the night and I am going to find myself out on the curb without a stitch on! NOT nice for the neighbours giggles 9. I have an amazingly athletic and versatile tongue and yet I couldn’t whistle until I was in my 20’s… What’s that? You want to know what I can do with my tongue? Suffer baby…. 10. My very first macro shot got featured in the 1:1 Macro group today. 10. When it gets really cold like it is now I’m afraid my bum is going to freeze to the toilet seat 10. Ummmm…. I forget… okay, that whole short attention span thing has just kicked in. 10. I once ate 3 dozen choc chip muffins and 2 litres of custard in one sitting. Ok… so that last one is a lie… BUT I AM HUNGRY DAMNIT!

Welcome to the very first installment of a series of three panel strips I’ve aptly titled “Bubbleworld!” Bet you’re excited, aren’t you? No? I used an exclamation point…didn’t that help any? No, it didn’t have any effect? Well, can you at least pretend to be excited? For your old pal Steve? Come on, what’s it going to hurt? You can? Cool, thanks, I appreciate it. My goal with the “Bubbleworld” is simply to showcase the work of some of the people I’ve met during my first three months or so on the site, and to show my appreciation of them, and admiration for their work in the only way I know how… By poking fun at them. (What can I say, I’m an emotional misfit.) First on the chopping block is the good Mr. Dave Edwards also known as BLYTHART / (For a larger image click the picture) Dave is a man of many artistic talents and seems to be a hell of a nice guy to boot. Hopefully he enjoyed my little comic. Here are just a few examples of Dave’s work that I used as inspiration for the above piece. (Click for a larger image) I’m going to try and do a new one every couple of weeks, some sooner, some no doubt later due to my amazing ability procrastinate. I already have next weeks edition ready to go so expect it next Monday. If anyone out there wants me to feature them, just let me know via. Bubblemail and I’ll see what I can do. It might take me a couple of months to get to you but I’ll try my best. Steve~

Jason Spencer is in an online poll in competition / for an exhibit. I personally love his work as most of / us do. I am amazed to see that he is falling behind / to someone I don’t think is nearly as talented as he is. The poll is here at House Of Scratch I am not sure who the other artists are but I say / we should all pull together and VOTE for Jason / a fellow Red Bubbler. Killernapkins

  • Pages From the Digital Sketchbook 2: Something Weird Quarterly Issue 2 cover

One of the experiences of the last few years that was a hell of a lot of fun for me was working as cover artist on the now (unfortunately) no-longer-published Something Weird Quarterly, a local anthology of SF/Horror comics. The original plan for the book was to be a standalone graphic novel, acting as a ‘sequel’ to a previous book, Something Wicked Horror Anthology. Interest in submitting material had grown though, and the publisher decided on launching the project as a quarterly publication instead. Originally acting as cover artist for the graphic collection, and having been the cover artist on the original volume, I ended with the regular gig. The cover to issue 2 is an interesting example in process-by-experiment. Originally planned as the cover for the anthology volume, it wasn’t quite gruesome enough for the publishers’ taste: In the end, I shelved that illustration in favour of another which was better received. When it came time to start work on the cover for the next volume, however, I couldn’t shake the thought that my original draft had something worth exploring. So, rather than trying to tweak the original, I took my line art into Photoshop and effectively redrew it entirely: From here, it was a case of working up the values in greyscale: And then adding colours and a few effects to up the creepiness: In the end, I think I managed to take what was an overly-cartoony, sub-par rendition of my idea and inject a substantial degree of extra mood, drama and horror. As with every past work, there’s things I’d change, but on the whole I’m still pretty happy as to how this and the subsequent covers, turned out. Well, that’s all for this page in the sketchbook. Hope you’re enjoying them, and if you haven’t checked them out yet, the first two (or 1 and 1a) can be viewed by clicking on the links below: Page 1 / Page 1a Cheers, / Si

Welcome to the fourth installment of a series of three panel strips I’ve aptly titled “Bubbleworld!” This weeks edition is a wee bit late, but hopefully you’ll think it’s so incredibly funny that all will be forgiven. (Hopefully, but not very likely). The goal with the “Bubbleworld” is to showcase the work of some of the people I’ve met during my first three or four months on the site, and to show my appreciation of them, and admiration for their work in the only way I know how… By poking fun at them. (Because complimenting people is so darn awkward.) On the chopping block this week is the unstoppable force of nature that is PINKYJAIN. Not only is Pinky the very first person to ever add me to her watchlist her on Redbubble, but she’s a heck of a talented artist to boot. The thing I love most about Pinky’s work is the unpredictability of it. (Despite the fact that my strip focuses on one specific thing…go figure.) (For a larger image click the picture) Take a moment out of your day and take a browse through Pinky’s portfolio. I really dig the vampire series myself. Here are just a few examples of her work that I used as a direct inspiration for the above piece. (Click for a larger image) Volume 5 may or may not be coming next week as I’ve got a lot on my plate at the moment, but if I can’t get one up next week there will be one the week after. Steve!

One of my close friends on and offline is now posting work here at Red Bubble! / His stock is so popular from Deviant Art you will more than likely see it here over / and over. I have used him in such pieces as the ones posted below. Morfland is a must see! So many don’t realize that he is not only a fantastic stock artist but an amazing / traditional artist and photo manipulator as well. He has tackled so many areas / in the art world and with success. If you haven’t yet met him here or at DA / I think you might find him very refreshing. These are my two cents. Gone Batty / The Apple Who Bit Back / Portrait Of A Mad Man / Here are some of his works from Deviant Art / ( The RB are not link enabled ) Ice Cream / Angelina Jolie Pencil Portrait / Makes Hearts Happy / Cleaver wings? / Run, hurry, have fun looking!

  • I love this weird painting, and had a lot of fun doing it… Glad to see this baby appreciated. Thank you sooooooooo much, Sally and Amber!

Welcome to the third installment of a series of three panel strips I’ve aptly titled “Bubbleworld!” Unlike last week, this weeks entry is in fact on time (though I don’t really have any set schedule, so “on time” is a relative term). Next weeks edition will more than likely be more late than a snail with a busted time piece, so maybe I should relish my brief moment of success and simply shut up. The goal with the “Bubbleworld” is to showcase the work of some of the people I’ve met during my first three or four months on the site, and to show my appreciation of them, and admiration for their work in the only way I know how… By poking fun at them. (Because simply complimenting them would be too easy and much less time consuming.) On the chopping block this week is the wonderful SHANNON JUSTICE who is the “owner, founder, and all around head honcho of Hahpi Stuff Illustrations.” (According to her profile) I believe that she’s also the only employee, and therefore owner/founder by default…but whatever. Shannon was among the first people to ever add me to their watchlist and for that reason alone she deserved a strip dedicated to her. Oh, her work is also pretty darn good to boot. ;) (For a larger image click the picture) Take a moment out of your day and take a look at some of Shannon’s work. You won’t be disappointed. Here are just a few examples of her work that I used as a direct inspiration for the above piece. (Click for a larger image) I’m going to try and do a new one every couple of weeks, some sooner, some no doubt later due to my amazing ability procrastinate. Steve!
