  • First, let me make it clear I am not a PINK person at all. This idea was left floating around after I tried to get work at a media outlet earlier in the year, which specialised in children’s entertainment to late high school level – not the same demographic as RB! I had done a rough, originally of a rather anorexic girl in a fashion parade wearing a robin hood kind of dress and carrying a bow and arrow. Later, I saw the bow and arrow differently – changed her costume, and worked it up to this. The background was an experiment, because I wanted something more than a flat colour for the heart, and was thinking – if only I could magically apply a PS filter that would conjure up wonderful patterns! – so this is my manual substitute for a PS filter. gouache / 300 gsm watercolour paper / 210×250 mm / gradient background with colour partially selected from image

  • This simple shot of three darts on a dartboard is evidence that I’ve always enjoyed the use of a simple device like depth of field to emphasise a single facet of a scene, to the exclusion of a complementary aspect of the same scene. The lens of a camera can be manipulated simply by adjusting the focus ring, producing an effect that the lenses in the human eye cannot ever emulate. In this case, my emphasis was the metal strips and brightly coloured segments of a standard dartboard, while the darts themselves are easily identifiable, even though they are not in sharp focus. It is also a deliberately asymmetrical presentation of a totally symmetrical object. I do not crop or post-edit my work in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D in 2007, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/20 sec, ISO 800, focal length 88mm.

  • Street photo captured in Centerlane.Melbourne. I think the person was a barista. Canon G9 used at high Iso in fairly low light. Small sensor ensures heaps of noise.
