I can only speculate that the winds in the fall blew fine mist, off Wabigoon Lake, onto the shoreline at freeze up. Grass, small shrubs and the rocks are covered in a thick layer of ice. I can only imagine what it looked like before the snow flew. Dryden, ON. Olympus E-510; 14-42 lens @14 mm; f:11@1/640; 200 ISO The original image was double processed and then combined in Photoshop and then cropped square to better balance the composition. This is the end of the rapids at the bottom of Raleigh Falls. I had to crawl down in a ditch and around a culvert to get this picture. A long shutter speed helped smooth the flowing water. Olympus E-3, 70-300 F4.0-5.6, Hoya ND 8 (3 stop neutral density filter)

The gorgeous Silverspray Falls (also known as Hidden Falls) deep withim Tillman’s Ravine in Stokes State Forest Preserve of northwestern New Jersey. The afternoon I captured this, the falls were very powerful due to torrential spring rains that had been falling during the month of June. By mid-August they may be pretty much non-existent, depending on how dry the summer turms out to be. The hike itself is very treacherous, but very rewarding when you finally reach the falls. The reflection of this old barn is like our memories of a life gone by. We remember the past in general terms but the details may not be perfectly clear. Reflecting gives us a warm, fuzzy feeling. Natchitoches, Louisiana, is a quaint little university town in northern Louisiana. The Cane River runs through the town where Sunday morning strollers love to gather. Some may remember that Natchitoches was the place where Steel Magnolias was filmed.
Spring time in North-Western Ontario means warmer weather and sunshine. The ice has mostly melted off the lakes. (A little remains near the opposite shoreline.) Its an exciting time. Wabigoon Lake, Sandy Beach, Dryden, ON. Olympus E-510; 14-42 lens @ 14 mm; polarizing filter
In the late afternoon, the sun filtered through surrounding bushes and trees leaving this water lily in diffused sunshine while the remainder of the scene was left in the shadows. The result is almost painterly. Fragrant White Water Lily / Flower: White, showy, fragrant, 7-20 cm. wide; many petals, 4 green sepals; floats on water surface; open from mid-morning to early afternoon throughout summer Wabigoon Lake / Dryden, Ontario / Olympus SP510; 1.7X teleconversion lens Group Feature: / All About Floweres – April 24, 2009 / The Compact Group – July 10, 2009 !
Two whitetail deer stood just inside the tree-line, watching me, on New Years morning. The weather was unseasonably warm. After a light rain, the temperature dropped below freezing, covering the trees with ice. The low angle of the sun created a shimmer in the trees. A south wind on Wabigoon Lake sends the waves crashing on the shoreline. Taken in the late evening, a long shutter speed eliminated the detail from the water, in sharp contrast to the stationary rocks. Olympus SP500UZ
In an effort to get something more than a straight portrait of a lily, the camera was moved around at a low angle until a suitable opening was found between the ferns which surrounded it. Dryden, ON. Olympus SP510UZ Group Feature: / All About Flowers – January 14, 2009 !

Spring is in the air. The temperature is rising. I’m getting antsy after being cooped up all winter. Gotta get out with the camera but it’s actually hard to get anywhere. So, you just go snap happy; enjoying just being out there. These icicles were hanging off my garage roof. To create an abstract view, I threw them out of focus, letting the highlights turn into circles of colour. (Thanks to Shelly Hiebert for the imaginative title. Check out her phenominal work too) Dryden, ON. / Olympus E-510; 40-150 mm lens.
Jackfish Lake is located right along the Trans Canada highway about 20 minutes east of Dryden. It’s a little rest stop/picnic/boat launch area open only during the summer months. On this particular day, we spent a few hours out there, trying to catch a sunset/evening reflection type of shot. Well, as often happens, we must have overstayed our welcome cause the sun decided it was going to set whether we were there or not. This was simply one of those “I wonder what would happen if ..,” kind of shots. The camera was tripod mounted and the dinky little on-camera flash was set to fill-flash mode. All in all, I don’t mind the result. Olympus E-510; 14-42 mm lens / ISO 100 / f5.6 @ 1/8 second
Actually after researching it, there are dozens and dozens of falls in the US that are named “Buttermilk Falls”. I guess it’s popular name for a waterfall. This particualr one, at the breathtaking Tillman’s Ravine area of Stokes State Forest Preserve in northwestern New Jersey, is a true sight to behold. The waterfalls themselves are a series of smaller falls cascading almost 90 feet down the side of Tillman’s Ravine which has become the favorite place of mine to shoot in northern NJ. This image was captured at the end of the day after a series of very strong spring storms occurred, so the flows were quite intense.
