  • I was in northern Rwanda in April 2007 as a volunteer with an aid group and we had stopped to talk with people at a local church. The town was Rhuengeri, it sits close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and has the unfortunate reputation as having been home to a number of those who perpetrated the horrific genocide of 1994. / The atmosphere in Rwanda is one of pervading ‘brokeness.’ Millions of orphans live side by side with those who tortured and massacred their families 14 few, short years ago. Millions more suffer the newer enemy – HIV Aids and countless others wander ghost like in a state it seems of perpetual shock, haunted by the past and overwhelmed by the concept of a future. / This was April. The official month of mourning. When people publicly face what privately never leaves them. / I was sitting on a step tired and desperate for fresh air when I looked into the crowd that inevitably gathered wherever we were. / This woman, is by my guess perhaps 30 and she is as are most, dirt poor. / I was absolutely transfixed by her and her child. / She seemed to me to sum up so much of what I saw. / Love and desperation and yes, compassion. / Her breast is bone dry and cracked and yet she tries to feed her baby. Perhaps it is the hope inherent in the action which feeds her. / At the same time, she looks totally preoccupied by her struggle for survival. / What is she thinking as she gazes into the middle ground? / My thought is, ‘where is the next meal.’ Where will she get it from? How will she share it? And upon finishing it, where will she find the next one? / I was overwhelmed by seeing the reality of those who live literally from hour to hour, day after exhausting day. / It confronted me then. / It continues to confront me now. / – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Monotone photography

  • The Henry Ross Lookout is on the Kennedy Highway (part of the Savannah Way), which cuts its way up the Macalister Range above Smithfield, a township in the Northern Beaches stretch north of Cairns, to Kuranda at the top of the range. The Kennedy Highway affords spectacular views of the low lying areas between the range and the ocean, and also takes one through lush rainforest areas. I took this exposure on a beautiful clear day. If you would like a High Definition wallpaper of this image, I have put a wallpaper version over at flickr:

  • This charming seaside cottage in Carmel-by-the-Sea was for sale when I was visiting in May of 2007. I still dream of living here. Carmel is the most charming city in America. you would need to come and stay for at least a week to see everything, but as you leave, you will be dreaming of returning as soon as possible. It sits overlooking the Pacific Ocean and has such a temporate climate, comfortable all year ‘round. They only get about 18 inches of rain annually, but it also gets 161 days of fog. I want to thank everyone who has come by to see this photo and to add it to their favorites. I am happy to see that so many people would love to have this as their dream house as well. It will always have a magical quality to me. • The road to California is supposed to be paved with Gold. But these days the road to California is paved with poppies and lots of them. Even the railroad tracks are paved with poppies. This has been an amazing Spring for wild flowers here in the Northern part of California. Taken near Wheatland in Northern California with a Canon Rebel XSi with a 55-250mm lens. Yes these tracks are periodically used so I was lucky to get the shots that I did. • Grass Hearts © Vicki Ferrari Hearts a-floating… the blue sky is like a flowing river, filled with beautiful emotions. But the hearts float above, their strength comes from within, not from the support of another heart. Their strength is their own and they share with each other, not use each other as leaning posts. They therefore are functional (and not becoming dysfunctional) and self-reliant (therefore not co-dependant).... Taken at Alstonville, New South Wales, (Northern Rivers Area), Australia. Stopped by the side of the road to take some photographs, of course! :) And for looking at my Grass Hearts, oh Grassy Arts!! :) Thank you! :) / Vicki Purchase Card / Purchase Framed Print / Purchase Laminated Print / Tech / Nikon D70 / Nikkor 29-105mm / Photoshop (uploaded 8th September 2009)

  • BEST VIEWED LARGER / Thanks for dropping in the favouritings, Comments and Views are greatly appreciated Narrabeen Lakes is a popular paddling spot on the Northern Beaches of / Sydney. The surrounding hills and trees make it quite sheltered. The fact that / it is right next to one of the world’s best surf beaches is an added bonus North Narrabeen lies on the northern shores of Narrabeen lagoon, bounded by Warriewood to the north, Elanora Heights to the west and extends east to the ocean at Turrimetta Beach. Narrabeen is opposite on the southern shore of the lagoon. The first land grants were made to John Lees, 40 acres, Philip Schaffer, 50 acres, and James Wheeler, 80 acres, along the south bank of Mullet Creek. Alex Macdonald was granted 80 acres at the beach in 1815 and west of this land JT Collins had 93.5 acres by 1857. During the nineteenth century travellers had to ford the lake until 1880 when the first bridge opened. A second bridge at the mouth of the lagoon in Ocean Street was built in 1925. With the extension of the tram to Narrabeen in 1913 providing easier transport, the whole area around the lake became popular for holidays and camping. A large camping ground became established on the north shore of the lagoon. In 1946 the Wakehurst Parkway was opened to North Narrabeen connecting the whole Pittwater area directly to Frenchs Forest and Seaforth. The origins of the name Narrabeen are uncertain, possibilities are: Narrabin, a native plant growing near the lake entrance; Narrabine, an Aborigine girl; narrow beans eaten by early explorers. James Meehan mentions Narrowbang lagoon in his survey in 1815. / This shot was taken as the sun sets over the lakes, I would like to thank the guy who was kayaking his kayak mde this shot , so it helps the make do with whats in your shot Equipment: Nikon D300,sigma 10-20mm, handheld Technique: HDR, 5 bracketted images,Photomatix 3,2 64bit See Also / Beyond The Sea:
