  • The thunderstorm in this photograph was taken on the top-end wetlands late in the build up season…only weeks before this area was a dustbowl, yet weeks later it becomes a floodplain ! As the storm surged across the lush plains it dumped heavy rain and some shortlived reprieving cool winds. / / EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2007 bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / / / / / see more of my weather related photography by clicking on the preview image below. / / / /

  • This has to be one of my best images. Ormiston Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia

  • The Finke river one of the worlds oldest river systems flowed once again this summer. A cloudy sky and the perfect amount of light to record both the shadows and highlights in the range made this a great day for photography. Glen Helen is a spot that I rarely get to shoot because of a limited amount of time and a desire to take part in a tonic lime and bitters at the bar. • Once full rock pools are slowly drying up in the intense heat of summer. Before they do dry up these pools are teaming with both animal and plant life. Some of the more note worthy are fish up to 20cm long many species of frogs and blooming algae. • Yesterday I took an early morning drive to Ormiston Gorge my favourite spot in the West MacDonnell Ranges just to shoot this waterhole in the morning light. The water is rapidly evaporating and I though that I should go and get them while they were there to be had. I had shot many images from this spot but much later in the morning while finishing off the Pound walk. This is the first shoot armed with my new knowledge about diffraction and how it relates to my sensor. Instead of shooting at f/22 I opened up the aperture a little to f/16 in an effort the reduce this diffraction effect. • This is a reworking of an earlier image that I posted here on RB I really love the original colour version as all through the image it has beautifl soft hues where usually the desert is very harsh. This morning was truly the most magical morning I had been ontop of the pound with dense heavy clouds sweeping over the landscape and the thick moist heavy air filling my lungs. I had been watchnig this tree for more than a year and I had never managed to soot a single image of it. This was mostly because of my previous camera a Canon 400d with its crop sensor didn’t offer enough field of view even with a 17mm lens on the front. With both mt new Canon 5D MKII with its full frame sensor and the perfect weather conditions I was able to fit all the detail I wanted in both the range and the tree into a single frame. I hope that you like it! • A long fallen rock Acacia lays still in the spot that it must surely have once mastered. These trees are the dominant species on top of the Gill Range and it is easy to see truly unique individuals along the whole of the Kings Canyon rim walk. These trees must be exceptionally resistant to the dramatic weather conditions that sweep across the almost barren landscape. In late December several photogenic trees that I had been watching were severely damage by strong winds that were the product of a stronger than usual storm system. Some are still yet to show sings of recovery and are almost certainly to end up the same as this specimen. • NOT FOR SALE – not culturally cleared by UKTNP media office The late afternoon light moves across the face of Uluru highlighting the sedimentary textures of the rock. This angle of light will soon disappear as the sun moves toward the winter solstice position. It is very much an honour to know such a revered Australia Icon so very well.
