  • Here on Maui, we have a neighbor who decided to build a fence out of old surfboards. Well, now there are 600+ surfboards surrounding the property and the number grows daily as folks simply deposit their old hardware onto the property without giving it a second thought. I took this from the road using my Fujifilm 6×17 film camera (for sale now!) This fence has recently made international news and is a “Mecca” for all tourists to photograph.

  • Dawn this morning on my favorite island. I am visiting Cape Breton for the Celtic Colours International Festival. So far I have seen two wonderful shows, Pipers’ Ceilidh at St Ann’s Gaelic College with pipers from Scotland, Cape Breton, and Cuba and opening night show Common Ground: A Celtic Journey featuring Carlos Nunez from Spain as well as many musicians from Cape Breton, Scotland, Ireland, and Cuba (I guess there are celtic roots there too!). Tonight’s show is Anull gu Aiseag Mhira (Over to Mira Ferry). Inverness Gaelic Choir will be there from Scotland and Cape Breton’s own – Mary Jane Lamond, Wendy MacIsaac, Mairi Rankin, and Patrick Gillis. But the scenery….... is out of this world, and I know I can not do it justice!

  • dancing water frozen in time

  • watercolour 18” x 24” (46cm x 61 cm) on Arches cold press paper Charlie Wilkins (Canadian author of a dozen books) sits with a coffee at The Madhouse (a restaurant in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada). We met for the first time in many years, having been classmates and friends in high school in Cornwall Ontario in the sixties! / It was a great reunion in a great setting!

  • watercolour painting 12” x 16” on Arches cold pressed paper This is one of the many spectacular views that greet the traveler on HWY 17 heading east into Pays Plat, while driving through one of the rock canyons that rise abruptly from the shoulder less road. / Location: North shore of Lake Superior in Ontario.

  • During this past week, unimaginable waves came crashing into the north shores of the Hawaiian islands. The surf was windy, and messy, and disorganized—not ridable for the great watermen of Hawaii. I happened to be in Sunset Beach, Oahu during the storm, and the sun only peeked through the clouds a couple of times, briefly. I was waiting. Here is my image.

  • watercolor painting 18” x 24” on Arches cold pressed paper The Aguasabon (pronounced Ah-gwa-saw-bon) Golf course in Terrace Bay has a club house that is nestled at the base of terraced land above which, until recently closing, the pulp mill belched white smoke into the air. Although it’s a relatively short golf season north of Lake Superior, the location is beautiful and it’s a charming 9 hole public golf course.

  • Watercolor painting on Arches 12” x 16” cold pressed 140lb paper Typical early morning scene on Walkers Lake, just west of Schreiber Ontario on the north shore of Lake Superior. The dew sparkles on the leaves as the sun’s rays slowly warm the air, evaporating the mist. The gentle lapping of the water against the side of his aluminum boat welcomes the early rising fisherman to this northern paradise.

  • Watercolor 16” x 12” on Arches hot pressed paper Early morning mist rises above a small lake close to Rainbow Falls Provincial Park in Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Superior. Sitting on one of the shoreline boulders while watching this scene, one falls quietly into meditation.

  • watercolour 12” x 16” on Arches Cold Pressed paper The only movement was the mist, drifting in wisps and then disappearing silently above the still surface of the lake. See a short movie that I took of this lake on YouTube

  • watercolour on Arches cold pressed paper 12” x 16” Lyda Bay is one of the attractions found when hiking the Casque Isles Trail, along the north shore of Lake Superior just oustside of Terrace Bay, Ontario. I have visited this bay a number of times and love the peaceful solitude it always offers. Grumbacher watercolors on 140lb paper. The water is a an ultramarine blue wash fading into a sepia brown.

And bitter was the darkness that befell the bloomless rose. Only after this earth has been bathed in its holy baptism / shall it become the glorious garden it was truly meant to be.” excerpts from The Prophet’s Candle by Daniel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / This is a composite of two images taken at the same coastal location on Ke’anae Peninsula at the same time stitched together with Smoky City Design – The Panorama Factory software. / Shooting Date/Time 16 April 2007 20:32:35 / Flash Off Shutter Speed 1/250 Aperture10.0 ISO 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

  • watercolour 12” x 16” on Arches cold pressed 140lb paper / dry brush technique, Grumbacher paints. Arriving in Schreiber, Ontario, from the west along HWY 17, a semi brakes as he glides downhill into the old railroad town. The early morning sun highlights some mist still clinging to the hills in the previous night’s chill air. This painting is less realistic than a lot of my work, and was my second attempt at painting this scene.

  • watercolour 18” x 24” Arches cold pressed paper Paul is the skipper of this Dory, and he has gently brought it to rest against the wooden dock for mooring. He waits with his “baby” while the sun sets and his passengers enjoy taking photos of the rare caribou on this remote shore of the Slate Islands. / The Slate Islands are a paradise off the shore of Terrace Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior.

  • A brave beach cabin affronting the storm … / Seen in Blankenberge, Belgian coast. Feel free to have a look on my calendar 2010 ‘Beautiful Belgium’. This image is part of it. /

  • Watercolour 18” x 24” on Arches cold pressed paper A portrait of my friend, Charles Wilkins, in front of a painting of Frida Kahlo at the Madhouse Restaurant in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

  • This is Noosa North Shore, looking North towards the coloured sand cliffs, and Double Island Point. The cliffs are on fire, and much of the precious sand dune cover is going to be lost. Errosion is inevitable, possibly from an irresponsible camper lighting fires in a total fire ban, or the back-burning error made by the councils. Smoke can be seen to the left of this shot, limiting visibility along the beach. Still, this is one of the most beautiful places I have been, and the wildlife here, with the many eagles is just magical to witness. Even the pipi birds, gannets, terns, and seagulls (a seagull in flight in this shot) are awe inspiring! Canon 5D Mk II, 35mm, 16:9 crop. Available very large, and best viewed large!
