Like a fairytale castle Mont Saint Michel at dusk in the rain, I got wet and cold but it was worth it for images like this. A blended exposure using HDR techniques.
A mellow dusk view of the delightful french medieval harbour of honfleur in normandy, inspiration for the artist Monet. One Samuel de Champlain sailed out of this port in 1608 and 400 years later his is still remembered in the city of Quebec … Nikon 4800 compact / f/2.7 / 1/40 sec / ISO-50
This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. I hope you enjoy it, thanks for dropping by. / Paolo

The wonderful little normandy port of Honfleur in France at the mouth of the river Seine.(it’s best viewed LARGE for detail). To access by boat you tie up and wait for them to close the road, lift up the bridge pass through a loch and this is what awaits !(I had the good fortune to be a lastminute stand in crew on a wonderful yacht recently… huge happy sailor grins … :)))) It’s an absolutely stunning place with its rich artistic and historical heritage wonderfully preserved! It is also the place from which a Samuel de Champlain left in 1608 for the ’ New World’ and he went on to found the city of Quebec and 400th anniversary celebrations are currently underway… I might have wished to capture all sail boats in this wonderful settting… but took comfort from the fact that everyone on that huge motor launch had to take their shoes off at the door to protect the carpets ..teehee! This photo was taken in Spring 2008. I waited about one year for this scene to recreate. The flowing clouds and dancing shadows were a wonderful contrast to the blue sky and earth tone. If you have visited the Mt. St. Michel, in France, then you know it is a large area to cover. After one of my many visits I saw this beautiful dusk light, against an exterior wall and building. Dusk is my favorite time of day, with a sense of peace settling, in a small window of time. I feel this picture is one example. La Manche, France FEATURED in Mood & Ambience / FEATURED in Style! Church in Avranches, Normandy, France. Picture taken with Sony R1 which is ideal if you forgot your tripod. The camera can be placed on the ground in an angle and the top mounted LCD allows you to check the composition. Can’t beat that with a DSLR. Avranches is situated at the southern end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the E40 road connecting Saint-Lô with Brittany and on the rail line between Lison (linking to Caen) and Dol (linking to Rennes). The town was founded on high ground overlooking the dunes and coastal marshes along the bay forming the corner between the peninsulas of the Cotentin and Brittany. From Avranches, it is possible to see the Mont Saint Michel, which was founded by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches in the 8th century. A museum houses the collection of manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel, deposited in the municipal archives during the French Revolution. It is one of the largest collections of medieval illuminated manuscripts in France, outside national and university libraries. Formerly dominated by the cathedral, where Henry II did penance, an open grassed area La Plate-Forme overlooking the bay towards Mont Saint Michel displays only a few remnants of the destroyed building. The major church Notre Dame des Champs was constructed in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century to restore the religious life of the town after the destruction of the cathedral. A smaller church Saint Gervais houses a treasury, best known for the purported skull of Saint Aubert complete with hole where the archangel Michael’s finger pierced it (probably a prehistoric trepanned skull). The botanical gardens were founded in the grounds of the former Franciscan convent in the late 18th century. The expansion and introduction of exotic species in the 19th century and the location of the gardens overlooking the bay made the gardens an important sight in the town. / / / / Have a look at my other photos. 65 years ago many young men answered the call to free Europe from an evil empire that was called the Third Reich. Many unfortunately made the ultimate sacrifice during operation Overlord or D-Day and the many months to come thereafter. Godspeed my fellow Veterans.

Taken in the lovely morning light outside the beautiful historic harbour of Honfleur, I just loved this colourful nautical jumble… Not sure if this works well without further cropping but bits I couldn’t bring myself to cut out include …the road barriers which come down to close the road so it can lift up to allow visiting boats to enter via a loch, as we had done the previous night. Also (on the left) parts of the historic Lieutenancy building in which can be seen parts of the earlier medieval defences and ramparts.. while my memory is still fresh of all the harbour ladders (one seen to right of pic) up and down which I perilously clambered daily back to the boat laden with armfuls of baguettes, cameras, croissants and other delicacies… they say on board ship ‘keep one hand for yourself’ but I often ran out…... and had to trust to balance alone… oooer…. no soggy pain tho thank goodness!! :))

Normandy, France…guess the lines and angles in this shot emphasise for me the sheer numbers, amplified of course by the unknown soldier.
This one’s from a trip around Western Europe in 2005, where we went for a day trip to this rather unique place. Well, it would be unique if it weren’t for it’s Cornish counterpart, but we didn’t see it, so it doesn’t count. :p
